- Betel Nut Chewing known locally as "Moma" is very popular in Ifugao. I just want to share my experiences learning about this unique "chewing culture". Betel Nut, vine leave, lime and tobacco chew.
A local experience and local thing in this beautiful Mountain Province. In this video you will see a lady named Jenny and a mountain guide named Machete, teaching me all about it!

Kudos to you Kulas for trying the "momah" as we Ifugaos call it. I know the taste is not pleasant at first but when you get the hang of it, you'll be alright. Hope to see you around next time and we can chew momah together :)
ur the best kulas hindi ko kinaya to na mag nga nga.....
I've tried chewing Indian betel nuts with various flavors and they taste anywhere from bitter to sour to salty, but never sweet. In college, I had some friends who were Sikh and so they weren't allowed to drink or smoke by their religion, but betel nut was a loophole as was pot that was ingested but not smoked, like in a brownie. Not only do I now have teeth like Austin Powers, more than three in an hour I've learned will give you all the effect of drinking too many Red Bulls. Lime and lime (limestone powder and lime juice) is probably my favorite since it tastes like a tequila shot with the effects of a jaeger bomb and texture of chewing Levi Garrett (I grew up in the Ozarks having spitting contests after school).
I busted a bit in college
True in our country especially in our region of Cordillera, some parts of Nueva Viscaya and the neighboring provinces and some parts Mindanao but it is not exclusively in the Philippines only. I meet some people from Myanmar and Papua New Guinea who also chew bettle nut or momma and learned that we Cordillerans the Igorots' momma or bettle nut mixture are just basic compared to those foreign chewers who mix other ingredients that I am not familiar with.
Kyle try to visit the other places of the cordillera region, the province of Abra has many pristine scenic beauty too, like clear rivers, beautiful terraces waterfalls & hot spring.

It's psychoactive and addictive. Similar to smoking cigarettes, or yes, chewing tobacco. And sadly, it also has similar health effects if you've chewed it habitually for a very long time.

i never knew about something like this until I had a chance to visit Kayapa(Nueva Vizacaya). There was this sign that said "no spitting of momma".

it would taste better if you put honey on tabacco or rosepowder to sweeten it taste like toothpaste on your mouth
Go Auntie Jenny. 😂
does it destroys the teeth?
They say it strengthens it... but I think chewing anything like that over long term would be bad for your teeth.
mostly muslim people were chewing that too. but i felt so disgust seeing people chewing that most specially when they are just spitting everywhere! its disgusting!!! i will not try that for my daily habbit as well... i dont know but people want to chew some betle nut they should find a place to say and keep their spit in a bottle like what ive saw to your companion. but walking whild chewing muma.. no way.. and for me that lips that they have because of muma is not nice too look. well that is my own opinion only so no basher's please.
i am a muslim and an igorot but i do not chew betel nut or moma. do not generalize muslims. arab muslim does not chew betel nut. mostly indians, bangladesh and nepal chew betel nut. also mexicans, guatemalans, some native hawaiian... natarusam?
well i did not said all i said mostly... so don't be affected ok?
You said "muslim people".. read your comment please.. woe to you..
Go Kulas!
Go Joshua! Apir!
chewing betel nut actually is good for teeth it makes ur teeth strong and can remove cavities on the teeth but not do chew it often times just once.
Roger Napadawan sinurwan da met kuma nga agluto ti pinikpikan padle, hehehe
Except for the fact that the abrasion from chewing the betel nut can wear away enamel and cause loss of tooth substance.... I would advise against it...
moma in ifugao is the most nice moma in the wholeworld
It's a Pilipino chewing tobacco. The nuts is from a palm tree.
Parang gusto ko try to hmmmm

Actually, all Filipinos are chewing bettle nut in the ancient days, but when Spanish colonized the Philippines, they thought cigarette smoking!.. the Visayan history, the Datu's serve this during meeting!... ilokano too, they chewed bettle nut but forgotten because of western culture.
