2:20 "There are a handful of games that remain prisoner to this platform"
There sure are, MonolithSoft!!!
Yeah, kinda shocked that X STILL isn't on the Switch.
Ducktales Remastered :(
@CesarTorres61296 I bought that on the Steam Deck, last month.
Still trapped on the Wii U:
NES Remix 1&2
Kirby & The Rainbow Curse
Paper Mario: Color Splash
Xenoblade Chronicles X
Nintedo Land
Ooh spicy lore~
Thanks again for having me on! It's always a blast to play Sinister Dude!
It was a blast getting to work with you again! Thank you again for your help with this project!
21:35 Umm Actually! The Koopalings didn't first appear in New Super Mario Bros Wii, they actually appeared in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, breaking their 11 year hiatus! 🤓
OOP! Yeah, you're right. NSMBWii was their return to mainline platformers, but I never specified so that was an oopsie on my end.
They also appear in a number of side games in the SNES era. I suspect their revived popularity in this time period is partly due to the re-emergence of the Mario 3 and World cartoons on DVD and online in this era.
It was nice to find out in this game what kind of music Wendy switched to after Milli Vanilli was exposed.
@@pokepressbro what 😭
WE'RE SO BACK!!!
Happy to be here. Thanks again for waiting patiently
SHE'S DONE IT AGAIN FRIENDS
i've recently caught up with this series and i've been loving it!! not only do i love hearing your thoughts (and going back through some of my favorite games growing up - seriously, spm changed me as a person), but i'm weirdly invested in the framing device you're using. i can't wait for the final installment!!
Thank you! I'm going to do everything in my power to get the next installment in this series out before the remake of TTYD releases.
I wasn't expecting to get so invested in the framing device or a Paper Mario series review.
When I started this series I didn't expect the framing device to become what it is, but I've had a lot of fun with it. Thank you for enjoying it!
Ok but in how many games do you fight a giant raw steak by cooking it
Just because it can be done doesn't mean it should be. Okay, but I honestly wouldn't have minded the fight if the mechanics of the battle weren't so confusing.
She is back-eth
Also the Paper Heart that was meant for Sticker Star being the one that was the Dark Heart in secret just, makes, so much sense
Sticker Star was the point where discussion of the series became insufferable and so polarizing.
About Dream Team supposedly leading on Paper Jam, I'd disagree there. While it is one of the lesser popular Mario and Luigi games, it was moreso the pacing that dragged it down and not blandness. The game introduced a lot of creative ideas but was holding your hand all the way through. Dream Team respected the games before it unlike Paper Jam and the only thing similar about the two games is the art style. I'd put Paper Jam as its own thing separate from it.
Gotcha! Thank you for letting me know. Looks like I'll definitely have to play the series at some point.
Got here from a recommendation on your Super Paper Mario video and I’ve been having a great time. Love the lore along with the analysis. Looking forward to the end of this series!
Thank you for checking my video out! I'm planning on getting the next Paper Mario video out before that TTYD remake drops.
HOW DID I MISS THIS??? Time to get comfortable and enjoy!
I hope you liked it!
Great Restrospective once again!
Thank you :)
Im like the only person in the middle of both sides in the discourse, Ive personally grew up with both super and sticker star, and loved both, and enjoyed color splash, and I've actually enjoyed most if not all paper Mario games (mostly since i haven't played 64 since i refuse to spend 50 dollars a month for a few measley 64 games I'll play once and never again)
The NSO Expansion pack is definitely a bit ridiculous, but if you can find another way to play the original Paper Paper for thr N64 I think you'd have an enjoyable time
@@ZillennialRosa definitely agree with that there.
That new avatar of yours look great! ^-^
Thank you so much!
At the very least it gave us that really funny battle against a cut of steak.
Funny in retrispect, but so frustrating in the moment
57:52
Dangit he got me
I was so ready for it and he got me
Yeah, he tends to do that
That steak fight was the bane of my existence back in 2016. If I remember correctly it took me like 3 hours until I gave up and looked up a guide 😭 Great video btw!
I tried once and then caved almost instantly. I wasn't about to waste hours of my life
I suspect it was more intuitive if you had more experience cooking steak.
@@pokepress Fair. Considering that the target audience for this game was children, that part should have been made more intuitive with more hints.
If mario wonder could put 2d mario back on its feet by being unique then the next paper mario game can too
I think we're definitely on the cusp of something bold and new.
color splash wasn't nearly as bad as sticker star, it had a lot more charm and heart to it and it tried to rectify some of the mistakes of sticker star, plus, i only had to look up the solution like once or twice, compared to all the time in sticker star (the world 2 finale and world 3 boss were memorable ones)
somehow everyone misses that you can use the vacuum in the trash room of the jungle, too.
I feel like I personally consulted a guide just as much as I did when I played Sticker Star, if not more.
Been looking forward to this & it’s nice to hear your thoughts on this one! Can’t wait to watch the spooky videos and the finale to this series!
Thank you. I'm excited to be working on them and I can't wait to share those soon!
Insert agent stone SHE'S BACKKKKKK
And it feels good to be back!
I’d recommend reading the book “Collective Illusions” by Todd Rose. It doesn’t really touch on video games at all, but it should give you insight on how polarizing viewpoints that don’t really represent the overall feelings of a group become so visible.
Glad you’re back cool stay safe
It feels good to be back!
YEAHHH! I love this series!!
Thank you! It feels good to be back
37:47 now this is a point i can agree on, the steak is the only thing puzzle i have ever had trouble with because unlike every other situation in the modern games where the environmental storytelling is a good hint i literally had to look up how to do it, not all bad tho i applied the method to an actual steak and it turned out pretty good
It would be hilarious of the in-game recipe made a terrible steak in real life.
Spoilers for those who have not finished the video but 1:02:19 this is what I call a cool design
Thank you! I'm pretty happy with it :)
The most fancy mole I have ever seen
Wow it's been a while, welcome back!
It's good to be back!
I can safely say… I’m a fan of Color Splash. It’s funny, and the gameplay is fun. Still held back in some regard by flaws Sticker Star had, particularly the whole “need Things for the right time” issue, but what this game does right, it does pretty good. Game is nice looking, at this and the future Paper Mario games really make the full Paper leaning work for me. Music is nice, if chill like you said. And yeah, it’s very funny.
The lore has been very interesting to follow in this retrospective, as an aside. There’s clearly a lot of effort in the art and story, and you and everyone involved has done a good job.
(Also, I think I did get the steak first try, but I also don’t fully remember. And if I did, I absolutely used a guide because I didn’t wanna redo it. Or maybe I’d seen the game played in a stream beforehand. Either way, if I did, it was through knowing what to do ahead of time and not organically. I’m not too proud to admit I cheesed the BS.)
If you catch me in the right mood, then I do feel like I enjoyed this game quite a bit more overall when compared to Sticker Star. All in all I'm happy I played it, and I do genuinely believe that it deserves to be preserved by being ported to the Switch or something
oh my god you have returned! Finally, a worthy watch to eat ramen to.
I hope your ramen was tasty!
You wanna know the funny part? The Wii U and Sticker Star released within days of each other
2012 certainly was a year.
It sure was a game alright, but at least it's better than Sticker Star. By the way, I enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work.👍🏾
I mean that wasnt realy hard to archive or? XD
Thank you! And yeah, it definitely does some stuff better than SS.
@@ZillennialRosa Totally agreed.
My favorite of the... Well they're not "modern" anymore are they?... The mismanaged trilogy? Lets go with that
I like Origami King better from a story and aesthetic standpoint but color splash is mechanically better in my opinion, and as a game dev myself, gameplay is my first priority.
I'd still call it the modern trilogy given that there hasn't been a true new Paper Mario game yet. I also vastly prefer every aspect of Origami King including gameplay, though I definitely understand why most fans dislike the battle system in PMOK. It just clicked with me for some reason.
@@ZillennialRosa the remake does look promising, I was just kind of alluding to how, you know, after OK, PM64 was added to the online service and with a full remake of ttyd on the way, a new game could potentially return to the old style or do something equally as good
I didn’t really grow up with Paper Mario besides SPM, played this game fairly recently- wasn’t a really big fan but I had a lot of fun!
As frustrated as I was, I still enjoy a lot of the game and think it deserved a bit better than it got.
A bad time to find this as just one part off of the full 6
I'm hoping the release of chapter 6 will coincide with the release of the Thousand Year Door remake. I like to be thorough around these parts.
2:02 woolly world 😭😭
RIP
“Just as if not more linear than Sticker Star”
Believe it or not, Sticker Star is not actually that linear at all, strictly speaking! Once the world opens up, you can do worlds in a number of different orders. The method for unlocking new areas relies on getting certain thing stickers, *not* on actually beating previous worlds. Want to beat world 5 before world 2? You can do that! Want to do half of world 4, then half of world 3, then finish the rest of world 1? You can do that!
Not defending Sticker Star, but I’m genuinely surprised it allows you so much freeedom
I didn't experiment much so I didn't realize SS allowed for that, but it makes sense given the reliance on thing stickers for progression.
@@ZillennialRosa yeah. when i was like, 13, and had a 3ds with exactly 5 games, i had to get creative with my replays 🙃
Man…this (and Paper Jam) was actually my first Paper Mario, and I quite enjoyed it. And then looking around and seeing everyone trashing it was heartbreaking. Oh well, art is subjective.
51:54 Hearing the staff credits for this game made me feel wierdly sad for Color Splash. It's clear that a lot of effort and care was put into this game, only for it to end up being such a mixed bag of quality
also 24:39 😳 big lady
The developers who work on all the games are incredibly skilled and talented. They just had to conform to the direction they were told, which is evident in how mixed many aspects of the game can be.
37:45 I’m sorry… what? It’s a steak.
You tenderize it.
You season it.
You cook it.
You zest it.
Have you never cooked a steak before? Admittedly, the lemon zest part was a bit more out there, but aside from that, I only needed to reset because I tenderized it too hard. It’s not that hard to figure out on your own.
I don’t mind this game having a Basic story because it’s not trying to have a grand story. It’s just trying to be a funny Mario adventure and I’m fine with that. My only problem with the story is that it’s heavily implied and then revealed that Bowser was possessed by the black paint the entire game, but they never do anything with that and then at the end of the game everyone acts like he was the bad guy the whole time even though he was doing everything against his will. It’s just so weird. I also don’t buy that Kamek didn’t know bowser was possessed. He’s smarter than that. The game also could have made the black paints plan be a lot more interesting just by using what’s already in the game. In the game black paint is extremely toxic and can kill you and it can also possess you. The paint possessing Bowser wanted to cover the entire world in black paint, so why not reveal that the reason he wants to do that is because he would kill everybody on the Earth, and then the black paint would possess their dead bodies creating a new world of paint folk that he would be the ruler of. All of the pieces are there it’s just that the game doesn’t use any of them
I also think the game trying to pull on the player's heartstrings at the very end with the sad music as Huey leaves didn't really have the kind of emotional impact the devs thought it would.
I think the best way to sum up my thoughts on color splash is just... I HATE Sticker Star, but honestly? I just feel bad for Color Splash. Like Sticker Star felt insecure in a mean way but color splash feels insecure in a kind of self deprecating way.
like when a person you kinda dislike makes too many self depricating jokes that you stop being annoyed and start feeling concerned for them. IDK it's weird.
Sticker Star also came out at a very weird time for Nintendo as a company. Parts of it are worth loving. It's just kind of a mess.
Just sitting here wishing that SS and CS had at least some of the story chops that its three predecessors had. The music and art style of CS are both great, and I honestly am not that bothered by its many mechanical flaws (except for that damn Steak part). Because after all, I adore Super, and Super had pretty crappy gameplay too. So it goes to show it's the story that really counts. PM began as and should have remained as an RPG heavy in dialogue, settings, unique Mario universe NPCs, and story elements. It feels like such a disappointing betrayal that they include none of those things that made the first three so memorable (except perhaps the dialogue is good, but what does it matter when it's being spoken by red toad #113). I just can't help but reflect on this sad fact every time the series is brought up. Story is everything!
Well, here's hoping that with the upcoming remake of TTYD signals something good for the series future. Before that I personally thought PMOK was a massive leap in the right direction
@@ZillennialRosapersonally it was, every time I tried replaying Sticker Star I fell asleep for how boring it was, and I found Color Splash pretty annoying and bland every time I replayed it, so I stopped bothering and got rid if both, but TOK is actually pretty fun and charming every time I go back to it, and very much puts the previous two to great shame, if modern PM wants to continue TOK's route I wouldn't mind at all tbh, though if we now get both classic and modern formula PM games like how WarioWare has both a traditional game and another that does a major shift to the formula on Switch, that would be best of both worlds
I refuse to believe people actually defend sticker star, call me a old timer all you want but at least the first 3 paper marios were easy to follow and fun to play. Sticker star has too many instances where some random thing that you could connect progresses the game or the battle system being completely avoided and you gain from it too…It just boils my blood knowing i will never get my time back. Color splash is good, if you ignore the battle system which is never a good sign because thats whats the point of the game. Really wished we were in an alternate timeline where super is the only game thats a unique twist and we had an amazing paper mario game on the go.
Given all the comments I've read from people who love Sticker Star, they've pretty much all been people who grew up with it. It's easy for us to look at it and recognize the areas where it fails, but a kid who has only played that game will focus on the more enjoyable aspects of the game, which to be fair, there are some of.
39:54 What about Super Mario RPG that is only on home consoles and uses the world map as well?
That's true. I didn't spend a ton of time on Mario RPG when I discussed it, but the world map was an aspect that I wasn't super fond of, but considering the fact that it was the first Mario RPG ever made, I cut it a bit more slack.
Cherry Lake got snubbed in the OST section! 😢
I didn't want to pick too many songs from chapter 1
@ZillennialRosa haha totally understand couldn't even remember what chapter it was in. I do love that track though.
Ow papercut!
*Offers a bandage
I never played this one, and that was really because it merely resembled Sticker Star. I heard it was an improvement, but I had zero interest in playing another game with that formula. Can't be overstated how much damage Sticker Star did to this IP.
I think that was also part of why I skipped it, despite hearing that it was somewhat of an improvement, I still heard a lot of negative opinions at the same time.
Eyyy! You’re back! Oh and I kinda don’t have any interest on playing this one.
Well that's good. I played it so you don't have to lmao
As someone who's played this game about 20+ times in my life. I like this game just as much as Ttyd, and wish the community wasn't so toxic. We can have both styles.
Yeah, I definitely agree that the fandom is full of toxicity. I'm hopinh that with the TTYD Remake, Classic Fans will be more chill going forward
Ah yes the era when Nintendo ignored feedback and made terrible decisions. Color Splash is the exception......right right? Hahaha.😢
Never played this one, nor did I buy it! SS was so disappointing and bad that I knew that CS wasn't going to be any different. Hell, I even remember the infamous Nintendo Direct that revealed this game with Bill Trinen's unfunny lame ass pun before the game was shown!
Not to mention only like 10 people owned a Wii U so there wasn't much of an audience for CS at the time.
