What's The Best F1 Racing Sim?

  • Today, I'm posing the question, what's the best F1 racing sim? Do the 'hardcore' racing simulators do a good enough job of replicating the F1 experience? So then, if F1 2019 isn't the best F1 racing sim, what is?

I would love them to release a future F1 game where you have a sim mode (with state of the art physics) and an arcade mode so that player can choose which one to play

Can't really blame the sims for their lack of F1 content, since F1 will sue them blind if they dare use any of it. It's one thing that worries me about the current boom in sim racing's exposure. Whenever something reaches a certain level of popularity, it is almost inevitably ruined by the desire to appeal to the lowest common denominator in an effort to maximize profits.

Yep, Chris did a great job with this video but this particular issue should have been mentioned - as with AMS they have 'representative' F1 cars from certain eras but have to be careful not to identify them further. Personally I rate AMS1 still as the best dynamics/physics for F1 cars - all the other qualities (tracks, online, possibly A.I. less so).

It might not apply 1:1, but actually because of Call of Duty's recent legal win over the right to use military Humvee's in their game under the guise of "trying to simulate a real scenario" is good defense for being able to make proper series content in the better racing simulators. Again it might not slide, but it is a bit of hope.

Would be great to see codies build in a hardcore physics "Pro" mode that could be used for esports and hard core sim racers alike. Cockpit only mode etc, something that takes the sport a little more seriously, but then can be watered down for console access. Oh, and maybe a VR option...

Seasoned sim racers (myself included) often forget what the key purpose of the Codemasters F1 game is. It is meant to be highly accessible to F1 fans on PC and console, with a very broad variety of wheel hardware and controllers. Unfortunately for more hardcore sim racers with dedicated equipment and lots of experience this means the compromises in physics made to accommodate this comparatively huge audience (compared to other niche titles) will leave us wanting on the pure driving experience side.
What is does do well is help strengthen F1 fans engagement with the sport, deepen the love for F1 some casual fans have over the long term and as Chris states, provide the career, circuit, content and Formula 1 experience to the user.
I stopped buying the yearly Codemasters F1 game back in 2018 but this is because my sim racing hobby grew beyond the point where I found the driving enjoyable. That said, I don't complain that I hate the title because I appreciate what the game does for sim racing generally and the sport I love, F1.

    • @beckett929
      @beckett929 Před 4 lety +4

I think the driving in F1 2018 (also the most recent iteration I've purchased since 2013) isn't bad. It's different than AC/AMS/PC, but it's far from a cartoonish NASCAR Heat experience.
And what I VERY MUCH enjoy in the F1 game is the car development strategy/aspect - aside from practice sessions generally rewarding you more points than winning a race. It's a feature that you cannot get in any other game, that makes it feel immersive. You have to focus on R&D and it's a cumulative effect year over year.
You're doing more than just running races to collect points and win a title, and then moving on to the next custom season that conveniently leaves off difficult tracks like Baku. I'd like to see the custom season files of most of the "hardcore sim racing" crowd... my bets are there's a lot more Monza than there is Sochi.

F1 2019 is a driver role-playing game. What's worse, Codemasters seems to only be leaning-in on those "features" for 2020, while leaving everything else neglected. The car simulation aspect does not appear to be important to them whatsoever.

I’m a big AC fan - best combination of physics, tracks, content and graphics. Before that, GTR2 and before that GT Legends. I’ve recently bought a PS4 with GranTurismo and F12019. Whilst GT is very arcade like, F12019 was a pleasant surprise. Whilst the physics engine and tyre model are not as good as AC, it still does require skill to do well. The overall game is very immersive however, where any concerns over real world physics details soon get forgotten. Elements that stood out for me immediately were: graphics - almost want wet races now / sound - use of the speaker on the PS4 controller brings a dimension of realism that has to be experienced / strategy - I find myself spending far less time messing about with fine details of setup (defaults are very very good starting points) and more time deciding on tyre and fuel strategy - I’ve had a couple of great career races now where I’ve remediated poor qualifying by under fuelling the car for a good start, going for a short first stint whilst saving fuel, then existing the pits on full engine mode for a few laps until my competition pit, gaining several hundred places and then turning the engine down to make sure I can get it over the line whilst defending my track position. It really works and with AI set to high level you can get yourself to a competitive level for online racing.F12019 with a choice of sim or game physics models would be rather good! Surprised that R Factor 2 (Pro) doesn’t do better given that it is the sim engine that many F1 teams actually use in their own sims (true - with their own physics and CFD models to match their own car obviously).

The answer is Grand Prix Legends! GPL is still going strong after more than 22 years, with an insanely dedicated modding community that is constantly churning out spectacular mods like the recent 1955 season mod and the stunning Spa '67 circuit. As an F1 game it' checks all the boxes; full calendar, all the teams and drivers, immersive gameplay, solid physics, and a proper game-like structure (creating a driver and playing through a season/career).
The only catch? All the F1 content is is from 1969 or earlier.

I'm waiting on the Pre-War mod. That one will be epic. Then perhaps they can build a late 70s mod. A modern mod would probably break the games physics, but it'd be so cool.

I think I would agree with the conclusion. Personally I would never choose the official game over AC on the sole factor of the driving experience. I would rather have the far superior driving experience that AC provides over the more realistic career/team given by the official game.

what's annoying is that CM owns exclusivity rights to F1, so no other game developer can really make an hardcore F1 sim.
The least CM could do is make a proper F1 sim

I’ve never tried or bought a modern CM F1 game. I imagine it doesn’t drive very well compared to other titles I’m used to on PC. However, I’d probably buy one year after year if they’d just add freaking VR support.
Personally I think any one of the ASR early 90s F1 cars in AC is the best experience I’ve ever had.

I hate Codemasters for bottling the handling (again)... but I have to agree with your conclusion, Chris.

If I remember right, PC2 had texturing files for a 2017 Formula 1 that had official F1 teams skins of that year. However, we can guess that the deal with F1 was not concluded, but we can still keep our fingers crossed for PC3 to include F1 cars

There is nothing wrong with the Codemasters F1 games, as pick up and play arcade racer they are brilliant. Stick a Logitech G920 into the mix and you have a very fun game open to all players. When you were 8 playing the Tony Hawk games was amazing, you could hit a few buttons and Ollie, kickflip and grind around any map, but imagine of you couldn't Ollie in the game, if you could Ollie in real life. Obviously for Pro skaters Tony Hawk was fake and unrealistic but I'm a kid playing a game for fun

  • @gopherchucksgamingnstuff2263

I agree Assetto has the best mod community. But like you said it very's wildly with the drift cars as well. I just got the Hoonatruck and Hoonacorn and they are miserable to try to drive. They are direct rips from Forza and the physics are terrible but the models are beautiful so half of one and less the other. Great edit Chris.

I suppose the F1 series is good on a triple monitor setup, but for VR and 16:9 single screen people, it's severely lacking.
I will never purchase a racing sim that doesn't feature VR ever again. It is so much more immersive, and contributes so much to consistency that it makes any flat game a bit bland.
I did try the F1 game nonetheless, because it's F1, and because I really like the RPG aspect (unlike most here, I do wish they would lean into that a lot more, but to make it optional). Still, I find it hard to get any kind of consistency lap after lap. Since there is no virtual mirror, if you want to see what goes on behind you, you have three options: the T-cam, a cartoonish FOV, or bind buttons on your steering wheel to move your head left or right. I opted for the first, but even if F1 is the only motorsport I'm interested in, driving in the Codemasters game just isn't very... fun. I'd rather drive an Abarth in VR in Assetto Corsa, because it feels so immersive and... fun.

The problem with different studios releasing F1 content would simply be licencing. While F1 has an official title they wouldn't be able to license other studios to release modern content.
Maybe the SIM community could convince Frontier to release a multi skill tier title with their newly acquired license.

Yes, totally agree. Not to spoil your ending but all other software have are the physics. An F1 car is not like an indycar, not an F3, or any other open wheel car. F1 if you want to drive the car, comes with the pressure of ultimate failure to place on the podium if not the winner. The other drivers who don't place are just spectators. And with that, an F1 race means little to no mistakes during any session. Reading the weather, the flags, the temperature, the car development, if those don't line up correctly, you will be out of a trophy. And, if you don't have any of those, it is not F1. I've been playing F1 games since PS2. When Codemasters came along and wanted to include the whole experience I dismissed it because I just wanted to drive. However, today, in any other game, if the F1 experience is not there, it is not F1.

Let's hope Codemasters will put some effort in race feeling. Not like now when you're hovering over the ground. I guess that's the really tricky part of coding that only a few are mastering, like Gran Turismo, where you can feel the tires try to get a grip on the tarmac.

If some F1 drivers lay togethor some millions they can buy the F1 game license and their own game studio and make a better F1 sim.

im still playing F1 2011 in 2021, i feel that was and still is the best sim from all the codemasters games. turn off ALL the aids and get kristans ai mod v2 and its a great challenging game with good handling characteristics with power oversteer well simulated, which is often the problem with most of them.
