Which Current F1 Drivers Are Involved in Sim-Racing?

- Spending your entire life by working your way up through the feeder series and into Formula One is a mighty task indeed. The last thing on your mind would be to get back behind the wheel after a long tiring week of race preparation, but many of the drivers on the grid load up the sim once they're back home.
There's a good chance you may have virtually raced against an F1 driver, so we've gone down the 2022 grid to see who shares interest in sim racing, and who unfortunately does not. Whether that's through the F1 series, an iRacing lobby or simply a Forza Horizon free-roam area, the world of sim-racing allows you to participate alongside these drivers in the comfort of your own home.

Speaking of Alonso, he takes the big events extremely serious. I was alongside Barrichello and Alonso during the 2020 virtual le mans we practiced and worked on the setup 4-5 hours everyday for 3 weeks before the race. Sometimes even as late as 1 or 2 am, guy is humble and awesome to work with.
As for the 17th place finish, it came down to the organizers giving us a 'drive through penalty' literally a few meters before pitting in our box for fuel, which meant we weren't able to take on fuel due to the game prioritizing the penalty, so we basically had to retire. 3.5 hours later there was a Red flag due to server outage and we were allowed to re-enter the race but 12-13 laps down but we still pushed on from 30th to 17th.
@Jonas Jonaitis just outside the top 10, was a poor qualifying since we focused only on racepace in practice. We were top 5 racepace easily
He is also known to do Formula Vee at certain tracks. I’ve raced against him once. He was very fast.
U guys forgot to mention Alonso is an absolute monster on Iracing now. Hes nearly got 6k irating now

I watched Max and his Team Redline co-drivers lap the ENTIRE field at the 2021 iRacing Bathurst 12hr. He is the real deal!
One time I loaded into a gt3 practice session at Spa on iRacing to some guy screaming the lyrics to Super Max. Turns out Max was there

I once did a hosted session with a lot of the big names like Max, SVG, Catsburg etc. It was an amazing experience. I was nowhere, but watching Max and SVG fight for the fastest lap at Bathurst in a GT3 car was amazing. SVG wiped the floor with Max in the end, btw :P

As a driver who heavily leans on the sim to develop our real prototype race car, I am always dissapointed to see well known drivers that disregard how benificial it can be if used correctly. The value is undeniable, and it's easy to see the link between the young drivers that constantly over perform and their involvment in sim racing. Of course it can never "feel" the same. That is not the point and a ignorant way to look at it. You need to learnto use the sim the same way you learn to drive a real car, and you need to reach a certain skill level before you can transfer the experiences. As a tool to hone your skills, practice dealing with pressure and get used to operating on the highest level, it's incredibly valuable.

Say what you want about max but he bleeds racing, hes the world champion but still finds time to be the most active f1 sim racing driver, he goes home after racing and sim races. What a legend

Apparently he has a sim rig on his private jet also, and have been seen in lobbies 3h after winning a real F1 race. Absolute mad man & legend
I remember Jacques Villeneuve on a controller and laptop somewhere waiting for an airplane, 6th place twice in a Legends race against everyone being on sim rigs and at least Logitecs. He spoke how in the 90' there were tracks that he never participared in, so to prepare himself and learn corners before an F1 race, he would play the track in some game(s) on a PC. The true pioneer of sim gamers, handy with a controller 25+ years later!

Not F1, but I once got into an iRacing practice lobby at Spa with Tony Kanaan. That was pretty cool
I’ve seen Kanaan race super-well on the Fittipaldi brothers’ twitch channel which does a lot of iRacing. They get a decent amount of professionals in their lobby.

I read somewhere that minimum time in SIM work is being mandated in new F1 driver contracts. Maybe saw it in Jenson Button’s latest book.
the big f1 teams have simulators that are completely custom made to their cars, they do train with those because have 1to1 physics simulation for that car or at least as close as they can get... and no consumer could run that shit because its one car on track and it still needs a serverrig of pc power to run

We will see if Daniel will get into sim racing now that he is a reserve but wouldn’t be a shocker if he stayed away from it still. Being in a lobby with him would be fun with his humor.

Allonso got banned in iracing for a period for smurfing lol (he's back now), and Max uses Jos's account for practice, have seen him a handful of times in IMSA practice sessions
Robert Kubica is also active simracer despite having only one hand
It's interesting to hear that Mick doesn't see the value in simulators. His dad notoriously suffered from motion sickness, and those within the newly re-branded Mercedes team (Ross Brawn et al.) cited it as the single biggest component of Rosberg being consistently ahead of Michael from 2010-2012 (Michael essentially having to do all setup work once he arrived at a circuit whereas Rosberg merely fine tuned an already tested setup). I always wonder how Michael would have done were continuous in-car testing not banned after the 07 season.
He already outperformed Rosberg in Qualifying in 2012. despite having had a clear disadvantage. And to be fair, he probably didn't grew up with videogames while Mick probably did and does play some. Would be a surprise if he doesn't at all. So the step going to simulation isn't as big anymore.
@@PresidentScrooge, 2012 was Michael's final year, and it was clear that he was finally becoming comfortable with that Mercedes (his Monaco pole that year perhaps being the best demonstration). The biggest gap was in 2010 where it was quite clear Robserg had the edge thanks to sim work (Michael was usually miles off in FP1 and 2, and he would steadily claw his way back through FP3 and quali by steadily adjusting aspects of the setup, albeit at a severe cost of laps and time spent on track). I'm sure Michael also pushed Mick to kart in his spare time as a training tool (much as Fernando, Kimi, Lewis, and he used to do). Unsurprisingly, Sainz is the same way. He has somewhat of an aversion to sims and spends his spare time karting, and he also has an old-school world champion father. But, it's clear across the board that the drivers who spend their time in the sims are beating their teammates.
Or is Mick just saying that cause he doesn’t want to be hassled / trolled online. We all know how his family feels about privacy 🤷🏻♂️

@@CY078, that's a hypothesis I hadn't considered. Hopefully, he does see the value in it. There's a very obvious correlation between the drivers who are underperforming this year and the drivers who dislike/eschew sim racing in favor of training/karting, etc. If Alonso can learn to see the value in sim racing, I'm sure Mick can as well.

the endurance crash was a software fault max was driving so well that it somehow managed the break the ingame physics causing it go outta hand

I think thr drivers who are not gaming are missing out , as it sharpens your reflexes, and improves cornering skills , just look at Max. 😢
Appreciated the work put into this video- this is a rare CZcams vid because it’s actually well worth watching. I look forward to checking out your other videos. While I love F1 content, I’m also trying to find an ultimate sim rig or two for the house. A small improvement would have been a video text overlay of the technology/vendors you’ve mentioned. I love it when peoppe say oh you dont need that much force for realistic. What people seem to forget the nm from the car in real life is a bit different due to the actual weight of the car being there. Its wny lando, max and others you can see its got some torwue going and lando said he has it up to the exact feel of his car in real life. He doesnt hsve it maxed but I believe he had it around 15nm. I know that leclerc has his set pretty high. So yeah makes sense and thats not weak thats a good amount of force to always sim race with. You saw how violent the forces were for leclerc even here.
Its crazy how good lando and max are. Anybody over a 40% win rate is nuts. Super rare in iracing.

Many young drivers from all over are now sim racing its amazing to dee and it will keep this hobby alive for a long long time. Its one of the only hobbies ive been apart of that I just know I dont have to worry about it going away or dieing off.

It would be nice if F1 2023 actually worked. Asetto, automobilista, forza, and many other all work with force feedback. F1 2023 doesn’t. It cost 10 times what I paid for other games and it’s not ready.
Little personal opinion here: Awesome that some drivers connect with fans thru sim and stuff. But honestly I totally get when a driver mentions that doesn't have the interest in sim racing and prefer the real stuff. Sim is awesome to keep senses sharp but, ultimately, its for us who really like to play games or don't have money to maintain a race car, let's be real haha.

Then compare team mates, who sim race and who dont, and their results in real life. Every simracing F1 driver has better results, than non simracer

I was quite convinced for a day or two that a PSN player with the user name “Lew_04” was Lewis Hamilton but I believe I saw proof of him unlocking a GT7 trophy when the real Hamilton was in the Mercedes racing earlier this year… but I may have been mislead by time zone differences (I don’t know if trophy unlock times are displayed in the viewer’s time zone or the owner’s time zone, as I am in America, I wasn’t sure).

In England the Sir-title is a big deal as I understand so people call you Sir Lancelot ;-) As you know in The Netherlands we don't give a flying fuck about titles so we don't even bother. I don't remember his name, but I raced against a le mans winner in iRacing. He had apparently just joined iRacing and was working his way up which is why he was racing against plebs like me.
Everyone in the lobby started freaking out and just chewed his ear off before the race started, unsurprisingly he clobbered us all.
