    You really nailed it Mark. Starting with the 6 and fading into the 12 hammers the point home. I’m curious if any of your viewers ended up getting their first 12 string AFTER they found your channel. I did. I never had much luck with the 12-string probably because of being too impatient. Mark is a great player, teacher and motivator. His accessibility and how well this community interacts is a huge motivator. Five might be a little too many, but I never thought I’d have 1 and now I’m looking for another one. I believe it has made me a more well rounded player as well as a better listener. Awesome video!

      Thanks so much Randy. I REALLY appreciate that. So many youtubers lose touch with their audience after they get a couple thousand subs. I work hard at maintaining relationships and I'm accessible to everybody. I think I'd have five times the subs if people knew all they have to do is email me any question, concern, lesson tip, whatever. I hope you have a great weekend. Mark

      Watching Mark's channel finally convinced me to get a 12-string. I'm waiting for my Harley Benton that is on order since June but not expected by Thomann until September. I guess a lot of folk had been watching Mark's demo of the HB and decided to buy so they sold out!

      @@truthstillmatters59 I didn’t have one but when I would try to play one back in the day I sounded horrible. After discovering Marks channel I really wanted to try again. My local guitar store had a few budget guitars that I just couldn’t get to sound good either. They set one up really nicely for me and that did the trick. I always knew a good setup was important but maybe more so on a 12-string.

    Mark, your composition sounded much fuller and richer on the 12 string. The Beatles Hard Day's Night got us hooked on the 12 string sound, but within a year they were double tracking 6 strings, and we really didn't know the difference. I'd say having a really good acoustic 6 string is the most important place to start. After that, well, it's up to the individual player. It's very difficult to "unhear" More Than a Feeling, or other seminal 12 string songs. My answer is you "must have" a quality 6 string acoustic guitar. Do we really need a 12 string? Some people can live on peanut butter sandwiches; most people like more variety. Another great episode, Mark. Personally, I think you must have a 12 string. Your show just wouldn't be the same without one. Take care & Peace!

    • @8MinuteAxe
      @8MinuteAxe  Před 3 lety +2

      Hey Michael. Great example of the double sixes is Everybodys Trying to be my baby and Lewison boom says they double tracked the intro to 8 Days. Theres definitely a difference in tone. More Than a Feeling is a great example of that classic 12 string picking but I think I that's a double tracked 12. Just for fun I tried to play the six 5, 10, and 15ms apart. Doesnt work. Just phasing. Needs to be two separate guitars played, preferably in stereo. Thanks for all the support. Take care and stay safe. Mark

      @8MinuteAxe  Před 2 lety

      Hey Robert. If you just started playing, I would recommend that you get 6 good months under your belt and then consider a 12-string. Let's face it, learning to play guitar can be frustrating at times and anything you can do to mitigate the frustration is a step in the right direction. The 12-string requires more hand strength and more accuracy both with the picking hand and the fretting hand. I've been teaching for over 25 years and I've distilled my thoughts on the best and most effective ways to practice in a few short videos. I encourage you to check them out: czcams.com/play/PLHs47cXmf1DQyWozhXvRjnpduWmIbBxqf.html. FYI, I don't sell anything so this is not any kind of sales pitch. Everything on the channel is 100% free. The way you played a part on the 6 and then went directly to the 12 was an excellent, and fair, way to compare songs on both. The 12-string is great for strumming and picking, as you said. Ah, a southpaw. You have to be very intentional with your purchases. Even more impressive. I was always a minimalist. I toured in 2002 with a tele and a Taylor 410. We were a trio but the bass player had a guitar with him so I did have a backup. From 85 when I first started as a little kid until 2018 I owned maybe 8 guitars total. Something cracked in 2018 and I got gas full on. At least 30 guitars in the last 3 years. 🤯

    Amazing video. Other "guitar comparison" authors could learn a lot from how you did this video. Brief, back and forth, continuous snippets of various songs, without much jabbering, and use of CZcams chapters for easy navigation. On the negative side, you're hurting a lot of peoples wallets with how convincing this video is.

I started recording them one by one. Got to Crazy on You and couldnt get it up to performance quality and speed on the 12 so the plan was to take a few days and get it down. The next day the video idea didnt seem nearly as brilliant as it did the day before so I scrapped it. I didnt have the Taylor 12 at the time. I bet I could do it on the Taylor. I may give it a go. I realize with $300 guitars, quality control can sometimes be an issue which is why I didnt absolutely rave about mine but as a follow up to the review I will tell you regardless of price, I love it. It never goes out of tune and I find myself grabbing it much more than the Ric. When I did the Zeppelin electric 12 video, I recorded all but one song on the HB. You cannot make a bad video!! (And I hope you never do lol), this video was great, man! The way you faded from the 6 into the 12 really shows the difference between the two. Personally, I love me a good ol' 6 string, it's a really versatile instrument and works like a charm in every genre and song, especially for a more intimate, James Taylor-later Beatles-Rain Song vibe, but the 12 string sure gives the 6 a run for its money! It makes any song stand out just enough to make it even cooler! Like you said, the 12 string is like bacon, everything's better with it!!

    Thanks for the video! It's good to have both 6 and 12. 12 sounds more full, with real shimmering chorus and octaver effects. But for some songs it can be too much in the mix, so you need 6 as well. On a 6 string guitar is easier to play solos with deep bends. I have both)

    I agree that every guitarist should own a 12 string. I borrowed a 1970s Terada 12 string from a friend of mine and fell in love with it. It was made in the golden age of Japanese acoustics and has a beautifully low action and a great sound. I've been trying to persuade him to sell it to me as he doesn't play it, but it has sentimental value to him so I haven't managed to persuade him yet. Also very tempted to buy the Harley Benton electric you reviewed a while back. It sounded really nice and was exceptionally good value compared to the Ricky.

    Closer to the Heart technically wasn't recorded on a 12, but it definitely doesn't sound right on a 6-string without the Nashville tuning overdub. So I guess that's fair. I think that everyone should at least try a 12 string, and whilst I've know some not as comfortable, and I wouldn't ever try to convince them otherwise, I could never play anything else. I've had an extraordinary difficult last couple of months and find myself grieving much deeper and harder than I've done in the past few years over the loss of my beloved stolen Martin acoustic 12 string; as whilst I've played since I was 11 (proper chords, but toyed with from 8yrs old), I've also had several lovely 6 strings in early years, Yamaha, Gibson, then a humming bird as my first 12 string. However, it was a Martin, a no frills 12string acoustic that I picked up on a whim in a shop, and from that 1st moment, when I first held it, it utterly grabbed my heart and soul...and as such, both broken, lost, irreparable, when it was stolen. Even attempts to play subsequent versions brands, Seagull to Gibson, I couldn't find the 'right' replacement for my Martin, so convinced it was due to just being sentimental ....until I picked up a friend's Martin 12 a couple years ago. Bittersweet is the only word to describe it, as it felt as if mine had come home, then absolutely devastated, as circumstances are as such, I will never be able to afford to replace it, albiet unless my GP or Cancer Clinic docs could write me a prescription to have one covered;) That said, I listened to you again last week, and as I tried out a Seagull 12 again, I now KNOW 100% that my loss, inability to play the same with other makes or brands, isn't just sentimental now; as it's not just the sound, but the physical FIT and ability to COMFORTABLY hold, play a Martin 12, for me this is very real. Whilst a comfort to finally know, as it stops my futile, frustrated attempts to replace my own with anything else, it's also sad to know ones future, with not just physical health, disability housebound, but more so, my PTSD and depression have always been managed with playing guitar and music all my life; yet now that will be forever after, quite empty. But it's important for you to know that you and other music utube peeps ARE also helpful, share hope, and inspiring; as living vicariously also brings rays of sunlight, even on our darkest days. So please, keep doing what you are doing, because you make a difference in many MORE ways than you may know. The lovely supportive commenters/subscribers are also a joy to read, a community of like minds is always a special place to be, and for some of us, preferable to tangible places, as they also play a big part in keeping our spirits up:) warmest regards as always to you and the forum peeps, cheers from the Weald, across the pond, Garden of England:) Ladybudd XXX
