    When I first started playing 12 string I found that 12 string is a great way to get used to using finger and thumb picks. If you practice using the finger and thumb picks on 12 string, when you try it on a 6-string you're like a master of it. It's kind of like running with weights when you take the weights off everything seems easier.

      @@8MinuteAxe 12 String Guitars are pretty strong. 12 String Guitar sets come in a plethora of Gauges & materials. For E Standard Tuning a set of 10s (or even thinner like 8s which Ernie Ball makes an 8 Gauge Nickel Wound 12 String set essentially Ultra Lights) because the thinner strings will put less tension on the top, minimize the breakage (especially on that High G which is only a step below the A String on a Tenor Guitar, the Octave4Plus .006 B4 String is under fairly low tension to prevent breakage & is a step above the A String on a Tenor Guitar giving you more shimmer), give you a more equal sound, & make it easier to play faster.

    Glad to find your video. Many moons ago, played brother's 12-string, too chunky for my hands. Fast forward, I got lucky and picked up a Seagull 12+ at an estate sale (only $59). Man, after spiffing it up, that thing is like butter in my hands. Your video gave me some very nice tips on various aspects of playing. Really liked you comment on the pick thickness...after playing with at thicker (1 mm) pick, I accidentally picked up a .60 mm pick and the sound sprang to life. I also found out I like the Dunlap Max-Grip picks, the pick doesn't flip out of my fingers as easily on the 12-strings. Again, great video!!

    I've been using thin picks for over 40 years,and when doing string changes,I use a #2 graphite pencil in the nut slots and wipe off after.It acts as a lubricant and prevents "ping" My higher end 12 strings (Guild and Martin) I've kept tuned to concert pitch for years with no problems ever. They are built to take the tension.But tuning down is a good idea with a capo too.

    There was an amazing amount of good information in that video. Sometimes I tune my 12-string down a whole step, sometimes not. Maybe I can win one of your Vangoa giveaways and keep one 12-string tuned down and one at regular EADGBE. I agree that sus chords sound fantastic. I do Gordon Lightfoot's "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" on my 12-string and that A sus chord is positively haunting.

  • @magg93
    @magg93 Před 4 lety +18

    Great and useful advice. If you are going to tune your 12-string down a whole step to D, I would recommend getting 012. gauge strings. Lighter strings will be a bit flimsy when tuned down due to the lack of tension. Also remember to tune your 12-string every time you place the capo on a different fret (it will throw it somewhat out of tune..)
    Another important tip (for any acoustic guitar player) is to always monitor the humidity where the guitar is stored. Keep it between 45-55% RH ideally, to avoid any prolonged damage (drying out, bulging). And always store it in it's case when it's not used!

    • @8MinuteAxe
      @8MinuteAxe  Před 4 lety +5

      Hey Huell. You touched on something I totally neglected. String gauge. You couldn't be more right on the money. The funny thing is I'm so picky when it comes to string gauges for my electrics. I like 8s for my Tele but heavier bottom strings, ultra light all the way through on the LP, and I use 10s for my Carvin Semi-Hollow, yet I completely neglected discussing in my tips video on the 12 string. I have a three room basement studio where I film the videos, teach, and produce music and luckily the humidity is naturally good down here. Even the forced air heat in the winter doesn't dry things out too badly. I need to do a better job of putting my guitars back in cases though. If for no other reason than the fact that after one sweaty playing session I need to restring if I forget to wipe down. An expensive, bad habit. I appreciate you sharing your tips with me. I hope you have a great afternoon. Check out my latest upload if you have time LED ZEPPELIN PLAYED ON A 12-STRING czcams.com/video/E8ZUO4W15Jk/video.html. If not, no worries. Take care. May I ask you Huel, when you say "tune your 12 every time you use the capo". Do you mean tune it with capo on, ir re-tune it AFTER you capo & remove. I'm asking because my Takamine 12, 1982 is a gem to play. It seems to hold its' tune quite well. However, I do sometimes have to "tune in" to itself WITH the capo on! Is this normal with 12's? You seem incredibly knowledgeable!! Impressive. AND, 8 min. Axe- thank you for the lessons on the 12. Really talented & I'm grateful. Thanks ya'll!!

    I bought a Yamaha FG 441S-12. It is an amazing guitar. Songs that incorporate minor chords are enhanced by the 12. Songs like Wayfaring Stranger. Greensleeve, to name a couple. Shubb makes an awesome 12 capo. I use the same capo on my D35 and my Alvarez PD100S.

      I really appreciate that. Trust me when I say that I am very grateful for the success I've had. Everyone told me that it's impossible to crack into You Tube so my plan was/is simple. Upload videos that I'm passionate about and that (hopefully) have some entertainment value. Genuinely engage with every single viewer (subscriber or not). Add value as much as possible. There are a lot of people on here that do guitar videos but very few continue to engage after reaching 1000 subs. At least that's been my experience. I get a lot of canned responses. I hate it when I write something thoughtful to a youtuber (usually because I'm excited about a particular video) and I get a thanks man in return. If someone takes the time to engage with me, I will do whatever I can to promote his/her channel. There's nothing wrong with that but that's where I'd like to think I add value. My viewers know that I return every email and respond to every comment. I'd like to think that I've built my subscriber base one at a time. It's very time consuming but if you don't like talking to the people that are watching your videos, you probably shouldn't be doing it. I won't forget the first 5 months when I had 104 subs and half were my friends. If I ever get to a point where it's simply impossible to make videos and respond to everyone then I'll get someone to help me with the videos and continue to respond personally. This connection is especially important when things aren't going well. Last week was a crappy week for the channel and all I needed to do to put things into perspective, was to read some of the nice comments and emails. I'm sorry for the novel. I do appreciate and value your time very much and I sincerely thank you for your comment. I hope you have a great evening. Take care and be well! -Mark

      Hey Michael. Yeah, when I borrowed the Mitchell from my student last August and uploaded the first of fifteen 12 string videos, I did not see myself on my third one already. I found the sweet spot between compromise and indulgence in the form of the Takamine GS72. Awesome guitar. $700. Not cheap by any stretch. But it plays like a $2000 guitar. You can check it out in the lastest upload. TOM PETTY PLAYED ON A 12 STRING czcams.com/video/btx9fY0KHzs/video.html . Thanks so much for watching. Let me know what you're thinking of getting. It was stowed under the bed until 2021 when I dragged it out OMG it was still in tune though the scratch plate had dropped off, I have now restrung it and play it everyday for fun still good

    I agree with all your points and suggestions, well done! Twelve strings are a beast and it’s definitely a learning curve.
    Tuning is a bitch and you have to tweak them until your ear tells you it sounds best, for one thing. A good tuner is es-
    sential and PATIENCE is the watchword. Like you, I like tuning down a full step not only to help reduce neck tension,
    but for the depth of sound it gives. And capos are a blessing for a twelve. Jingle jangle, baby. Nice video, thanks.

      @@8MinuteAxe I hope that you changed your mind on the Taylor. In my opinion Taylors are not good 12-strings. I know I know Taylor is a great brand (which I agree with) and are known for making great 12-strings, but I strongly disagree. Why? One: they don't growl they don't have a personality that says, "I'm here. Now do something!" Two: their octaves are too subtle you should be able to hear them on the lower strings.

    All good stuff. If I am not going to play the 12 string for a few weeks I will detune it until I am ready to play it again. I typically play it a half step low and capo. If for some reason I need to move the capo I will double check my tuning at that point. The strings are under a lot of pressure as you know and even moving the capo can change things quite a bit. I don’t buy cheap strings. They are just not worth it. Good strings will out last cheap one. And I alway wipe down the strings after I play. I really don’t want that moisture in the case. Good advice! I might add: try a thumb pick. It takes some getting used to, but it actually makes any acoustic guitar louder!
    Also, tune the first two pair of strings E and B) slightly out of tune with each other. this gives the guitar more of what it already has, and makes a kind of “chorusing” sound.
    Raise one E slightly high, and the other slightly low. Do the same with the pair of B strings!
    Not too much, or it will really be out of tune, but just ever so slightly.
    Why do you think a string ensemble sounds so rich; they are just ever so slightly out of tune with each other; not on purpose, but that is the natural way they tune and perform.

      Hey Rich. Yeah, it definitely opens up a lot of possibilities and I would think for someone like yourself who is early in your playing career, it would breathe new life into your repertoire. I just got the Ibanez I'm playing in the video and I'll tell you, it's very easy to play. The string sets are much closer together than my other 12 string (I'm borrowing the natural wood top Mitchell from one of my students). That being said, it has a rather thin, tinny sound which I'm sure has a lot to do with the fact that it has a cutaway and a mid depth body, but also because it's definitely a cheaply made instrument. I'm going to return it and explore my options in the next price range ($450-$600ish). For what I do, it doesn't make sense to go all in but I also don't want to waste money money on something I'll never play. Let me know if you need help with any riffs, tunes, or theory. You can email me anytime at markaranalli@gmail.com. I respond to all comments and emails and I'd be happy to help you out in any way I can. Thanks so much for watching the video and for taking the time to comment. Take care and have a great evening. -Mark

      @@8MinuteAxe silly YT notifications, just got it, 5 days late, but I got it :D I didn't notice the tinniness until you brought it up & I listened again. I believe that is the same one I was looking at at my local shop as they are an Ibanez dealer. Once I'm allowed back out, oh that still sounds so crazy, I'm going to look at some. I have 2 dreadnought's now, and I will probably sell one, and use that towards a 12 string & I wouldn't mind a smaller bodied guitar for fingerstyle & some more bluesy type stuff. Stay safe & thanks for the reply!

  • @Billsingsong
    @Billsingsong Před rokem

    I have my 12 streak tune down one half step or one step. I have to go back and check however, if you need to use a capo on the third fret, that means you have to put it on the fifth fret and I would think which sounds awkward. for instance, Gordon Lightfoot on his live concerts on CZcams, uses a capo on the third fret, which I believe he has that tune down his 12 string guitar if he had, he would have put it on the fifth fret, which may again not sound right as far as the voicings go. So I’m torn if I should tune my guitar 1/2 or one whole step Dowd or tuna back to standard E what do you think?

    Great stuff Mark, especially for those who have little to no experience with 12 string guitars. Your blog and videos are the next best thing to being in a band with an experienced 12 string player, which is pretty rare to find. Also thanks for researching and playing demos of all those iconic 12 string guitar songs. I myself found a 12 string guitar indispensable when having to play worship music in church alone wih no back-up. The 12 string fills in with a much more full sound rich in overtones and harmonics that a 6 string just cannot match. Great advice about using a medium or thin pick as opposed to a heavy pick as it does give more control and even volume between strings, now I need to go buy some more as I always used heavy picks in the past. Thanks for all your time posting and sharing as it re-newed my interest in 12 string playing and like you, I have now relapsed into another addiction/ fatal attraction with my neglected FG-260 circa 1970. I had not played it since we moved away from our church in San Clemente in 1995. May I share some of my tricks? One tip to getting the classic 1960s sound amplified from an acoustic is an LR Baggs M1 pick-up as that is what everyone used back in the day before Piezos , it just sounds "right".
    The other thing I like about slack tuning the 12 string is you can play it tuned to D with no capo and tht gives different overtones and a rich sound to it which also allows you to sing songs that might be a bit too high in pitch for your voice, especially once you are over 50 or smoked cigarettes. God bless and thank you for the greatest and most comprehensive acoustic 12 string resource on the web, bar none! :) Jay

    I use a .73 mm Dunlop Jazz III pick. I like a little bit of flex in a pick but it’s still heavy enough for fast response. I found that Elixer strings last the longest and are easier to tune. I’ve had my 12 string guitar since 1997 and have tried a lot of strings.

    • @8MinuteAxe
      @8MinuteAxe  Před 3 lety

      Hey Musk Rat. I switched to the .73 myself. I agree with your assessment exactly. I use a 1.2 for my electric and a .88 for my acoustic. Two other viewers suggested a .35 and .5. The .35 is like paper and the .5 gives too much and I lose accuracy. I need to try Elixer again. I sweat a lot and I found I didn't like the feel of the coating but I go through so many strings. A lot of times I'll finish a lesson and when I'm walking the student out of my house, I forget to wipe strings down and they are shot. I also play five guitars everyday between practice and lessons so it gets expensive. I use D'Addarios for my acoustic (10s for my 12 string, 11 for my 6) and Ernie Ball for my electrics (8s on my LP, 9 on my tele, and 10 on my Carvin Semi Hollow). Maybe I'll get a set of Elixers for all of them and give them another shot. It's been 10 years at least. Thanks so much for your comments. I really appreciate your time. You should join the community. Don't worry, I have nothing to sell. There are a lot of cool people on here. Either way, thanks again. Take care! -Mark

      @@8MinuteAxe How do you manage proper intonation with 8s on a LP? I use 9s on my Strat, Tele and Hamer SteveStevens, but on the LP fretted notes tend to get sharp, exspecially the A on the 2nd fret of the G-string, so I switched to 10s for the LP. As to strings I also play Elixers on my acoustics exclusively after having tried all kinds of brands. They sound great and last longer than any other brand I tried, even without wiping them after playing. And for picks I also use the Jazz III, but the MaxGrip 1.38, since I'm playing rhythm and lead on my acoustics and found that playing lead with thinner pics you're always at a loss against the guitar that strumms the rhythm, as long as you play without amplification.

    8 Minute Axe A set of 8's are the Lightest Gauge of Strings for 12 String Guitars that'll save you the most tension. Tuning the 12 String Down a whole step will not only improve its action but it'll also make it easier to sing the high notes.

      Great point. The funny thing is that with my electrics I'm so picky about my string gauge. I use 8s on my LP, 8.5 on my tele, and 10s on my Carvin (well, that's more because of an intonation thing it's an AE185 with an acoustic bridge). I put 9s on the Ibanez 12 but then I sent it back. I wonder if they'll realize when they get it back that it has super light strings. LOL. Anyway, thanks again for the feedback. -Mark

    Helpful video. 12 strings are almost addictive. A few questions: I agree wholeheartedly about what you said about bar chords. I noticed you don't bar the F chord which I'm fine with. I find it hard to get a first position bar chord on my 12 string at the best of times without a dead string or two. But what about a Bm or Bm7? Do you just play the chord on the top four strings? Or for an Fm7? Thanks.

      Hey Ross. Great questions. I've been through 4 12 string guitars in the past year. I really liked the Takamine but all of a sudden I found myself crossing potential songs off the list (Little Wing for one) because the guitar was too damn hard to fret. I purchased the Taylor 150e and all of my troubles went away. The guitar is so easy to play. Previous to that, I did have to make the exact adjustments you mention. Here's one of my latest if you have time to check it out.
      MELISSA COVER AND LESSON czcams.com/video/ZrdcHMvKByg/video.html&ab_channel=8MinuteAxe. I have tons of 12 string covers and lessons and free tabs to most of the tunes (really free, I don't sell anything). When I'm playing live with two guitar players, I rarely fret the lower strings or even play bar chords. Mostly broken arpeggio shapes. Bb and F are definitely challenging on most 12 strings. I know a lot of guys that tune down a whole step and capo on 2 all the time. That may be your best bet. My channel has become primarily devoted to all things 12 string and the community includes a bunch of 12 string slingers with a lot more experience on the 12 than me. If you look through the comments, you can probably get excellent advice. Either way, thanks so much for checking the video out and for your comment. I hope you have a great weekend! Take care and be well. -Mark
