  • Ever go into a guitar shop and want to try out one of the guitars, but you’re afraid that anyone will hear you and judge your playing?
    You might hear others pick up a guitar and rip on some cool riff, combining chords and scales - how do they do that? You think. Now you’re sweatin’ bullets with fear but man you REALLY want to try that Les Paul hanging on the wall.
    Let me show you five ideas that you can use that will sound totally respectable in the store, but also you’ll learn a LOT from these five things…

    Great lesson! I bought a guitar at a shop for my brother once, who called me from out of town. It was a cool telecaster with maple neck, and yes, I felt like the guy who set me up in the back room with amp was staring, judging, making me reveal how bad I am at showing off. You just changed my life.

    To add on to this…pick any cowboy chord at the top and duplicate the structure here. Cowboy chord, major pentatonic to a triad, double stops to another triad, find some open chord voicing to match and work your way back. Do this for all 12 keys and you will learn the fretboard

    Golden lesson here. First of all, this describes every single guitar store experience I've had, bar none. I don't think I could ever buy a guitar in person with confidence, given that I'll always be paying more attention to how I'm sounding to the people in the store than whether I like the guitar. Second, I love the idea of structuring your noodling around interesting chord phrasings... a strum of a cool chord every now and then gives backbone and purpose to your improvisation. Great to look like you know what you're doing at a guitar store but also just to sound competent in any musical setting!

    • @GuitarLessonsVancouver
      @GuitarLessonsVancouver  Před 19 dny

    Thanks for the super cool video! I love the G shape D and C chord. Here's one additional suggestion, I think a C shape G chord is a really nice resolution, with pinky on D on 1st string and either open B string or G on B string.

    • @GuitarLessonsVancouver

      C shape for G is a great one. Frets 8,9,10. You can also leave high E string open to make it G6

    If there are any Rush fans below.......When you take the g chord shape and play it with the root on C as you demonstrated, if you use the right picking pattern you have the arpeggio part at the the beginning of La Villa Strangiatio by Rush. I'm sure you already knew that but you can only squeeze in so much in to a video. Very cool lesson.

    I would think this sort of thing when I was younger. All that intimidating that goes on. Now I’m older I still feel the same but I also know that it’s best to tell the shop guy or gal where you are in your journey and ask for help in picking the best guitar for your needs. Play whatever you can to try out guitars and pick the one that feels the best and makes you happy when you look at it. If the salesperson is snooty and condescending then they are the ones with the ego problem. Find a better shop. If you want to try and impress people then find an actual audience. From my experience if no one is throwing beer cans at you, that’s a win. But then I was in a punk band back in the day.

    I think it is a good idea to bring a fret rocker tool with you into a guitar shop, especially if you are shopping for an affordable guitar. It's small and discreet and you can keep it in your glove compartment or backpack. It tells you a lot about the fretwork and it could help you with negotiations and a free setup if you tell them you are interested in a guitar but it has some problems. It also will tell you the integrity of the shop when you present them with the facts. A lot of time when I am trying out a guitar I am not even playing music at all, I might be going up the neck bending every string a whole tone on every fret and seeing if it rings true everywhere. I don't give a damn about putting on a performance.

    Wow thanks mate. I suffer from social anxiety and as a guitar beginner, the most I do in a guitar shop is asking the guy If I can hold the guitar fearing to plug it into an amp and embarrass myself

    That was outstanding! Now tell me what to do when somebody says, "Oh, you play guitar. Here. Play something."
