The Lowest Attended NHL Game - The 334 Club Story

  • On January 22nd 1987, the Calgary Flames visited the New Jersey Devils for each team's 48th game of the 86/87 NHL season. Though it looked to be a typical, run-of-the-mill regular season game, some terrible weather and a lack of fans would help this mid-season matchup earn its place in the hockey history books.
This is the story of the lowest attended game in NHL history...

In March of 1988, the Calgary Flames made one of the worst trades in NHL history.
At the young age of 23, Brett Hull was in the middle of a great rookie season, having scored 50 points through his first 52 career games. It didn’t matter. The Flames traded Hull, alongside Steve Bozek in exchange for Rob Ramage and Rick Wamsley.
Brett Hull wrote the forward for 100 Things (David E. Klutho/Sports Illustrated)
Brett Hull (David E. Klutho/Sports Illustrated)
Of the two players the Flames received, Ramage was the most skilled. A strong defender, Ramage could also contribute offensively, yet he only played with the Flames for one full season before he was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Goaltender Rick Wamsley was not a standout player either. Wamsley played parts of four seasons with the Flames as a backup before he too was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in a huge trade which also made this list.
In Brett Hull, the St. Louis Blues acquired one of the most dynamic goalscorers in NHL history. In his first season with the Blues, Hull scored 41 goals. He followed up this performance by posting totals of 72, 86 and 70 goals in his next three seasons in St.Louis.
All in all, Hull ended up playing in St. Louis for 11 years. In his 744 career games with the Blues, Hull scored 527 goals and 936 points.
He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2009.

Do one on Jack Johnson, on how his own parents screwed him over financially by urging him to fire his agent and allowing his parents power of attorney. They would borrow money with high interest rates against his future earnings, while Jack Johnson had no knowledge of what was going on. Jack Johnson was left with $50,000, and was the lowest paid player in the NHL while his contracts went to pay back all the money his parents borrowed.

Ha, good stuff! Like other Devils fans, I can safely tell you that getting to the Meadowlands can be a *massive* headache even on regular traffic days, thanks to the lack of public transit in that area and how clogged Route 3 often becomes. It's one of the biggest reasons I'm so glad the team moved to Newark, NJ, where tons of train lines converge and make for an infinitely less frustrating trip in, even if it did largely mean the end of tailgating before a Devils game.
And hey, at least that '87 Devils team became the miraculous '88 squad that made the Cinderella run to the conference finals.

    • @pauljames6353
      @pauljames6353 Před 3 lety

A game with only 334 people could have only happened at the meadowlands arena. The arena was in the middle of no where, with no mass transit to the arena. There's also no towns, downtown areas or cities anywhere near the arena. It was the perfect storm (no pun intended) for there to be an nhl game with 334 people in attendance. Could not have happened at any other arena in North America. Had nothing to with the devils or flames.

Cast your minds back even further to January 1982. The Edmonton Oilers were due in Largo, Md. on the 13th to take on the Washington Capitals.
My wife & I were still newlyweds living in Richmond, Virginia. Richmond still had a minor league hockey team called the Rifles, and I was one of their most rabid fans, stopping just short of foaming at the mouth (Karen also enjoyed the games). I had spent the past couple of seasons reading in The Hockey News about some kid named Wayne Gretzky who was apparently turning the hockey world upside down with his superhuman skills. Naturally, with both of us working and no kids just yet we had a little extra cash on hand, so I purchased 2 tickets to the game. Largo was only about a 2-hour drive so the plan was to return home after the game, rather than staying somewhere overnight.
On game day, the weather forecasts were calling for heavy snow so we left early to give ourselves plenty of time to get there. We were driving our new 1982 Ford Escort which had front-wheel drive, which turned out to be a real blessing. By Fredericksburg, the snow was coming down hard and traffic slowed to about 35 MPH. By the time we reached what is now known as The Mixing Bowl in Springfield, we were down to a crawl on I-95 before exiting to the Beltway, where traffic was a little lighter but the roadway was in terrible shape. The plows just couldn't keep up, but I vowed to press on until we reached our goal. Nothing was going to stop us from getting to the game. Finally, we crept into the Cap Centre parking lot thankful that the temperature was just above the freezing point and we didn't hit any icy patches.
Once inside, we were offered free coffee and hot chocolate and told we could sit wherever we wanted. We watched the warmups, then got some dinner and settled in to watch what I expected to be a great game. #99 didn't disappoint as he netted the game's first goal less than 2 minutes in, and added 2 assists on Jari Kurri's 2 goals later in the 1st. The Caps clawed their way back to tie the game in the 2nd period, and each team scored once in the 3rd to bring the game to a 6-6 conclusion.
The trip home was slow but uneventful. The next day we watched the evening news hoping to hear more about the previous day's blizzard. It was then that we learned of the tragic Air Florida flight that clipped the 14th Street bridge and slammed into the Potomac River. I thought I had really accomplished something, but what happened that day in the river was a sobering lesson in what's really important.

As a canadian I can tell you : 1- almost 2 feets of snow is a lot, enough to bring traffic to a jam
2- this ain't no reason to ditch a hockey game

Have you ever driven in northern NJ? There’s way too many people. Especially if there’s a snowstorm, people probly werent able to make the end of the game because of the traffic. I got stuck in a traffic jam in between little cobourg and Bowmanville Ontario because of snow, and it took me six hours to get out of it, now picture the millions of people in north jersey/nyc area haha

Jonathan Côté all I’m saying is that the greater nyc population vs the greater Montreal population is a lot bigger. 18 million people versus 4 million people. Not only that, we’re not used to getting many snow storms like in Montreal. So it’s extra chaotic lol.

Yeah and now we have teams loosing their fucking minds right now because of the bubble. Fleury and his agent, Marchessault and his wife vs Instagram for some reason, the capitals having an on Ice meltdown, the pens leaving early and giving up, Tukka Rask fucking off back to Boston, and a couple players on st Louis boarding themselves, not to mention the refs giving the helmet to an opposite teams player. Don't forget the NHL thanking it's four oscillating floor fans, and thanking absolutely no one in attendence, and we'll as them telling us how to safely leave our couches at the end of the game lol
