Wayne Gretzky Was A Blue?! - Right Player, Wrong Team
Vložit

- In late February 1996, Wayne Gretzky was traded from the Los Angeles Kings to the St. Louis Blues. Though he intended to spend the final years of his career with his new franchise, The Great One would leave the team behind after just 31 games on the roster.
Here's why Gretzky's brief trip to Missouri made him the right player on the wrong team!

St Louis Blues legends Wayne Gretzky and Martin Brodeur.
Just not legends as blues. Most, casual, NHL fans don't even know about these 2 greats playing with STL.
Brodeur left the Habs because of a stupid coach just like Gretsky left the Blues. It amazes me that when you have a superstar how upper management will side with an underperforming coach.
@@robertbennett883 When did Brodeur play with the Habs? I think you misspoke.
@TheShowman EddieBowman🤭
I completely forgot Brodeur was a Blue.
Wayne Gretzky would have been the right player on any team. However, Mike Keenan was the wrong coach on any team after 1995.
He’s over in Russia now we’re here belongs
Haha well said
"Mike Keenan was the wrong coach on any team after 1995."
That was obvious to anyone in 1998 except for the owner of the Canucks.
If fuhr didnt get hurt who knows with a backup playing they made it game 7 against the wings
I was at the game where Gretzky got his first home goal as a Blue. But that was quickly forgotten as it was the same game as the infamous Tony Twist/Kelly Chase fight (Twist was living in Chase's apartment as he'd just been traded to Hartford with Shanahan in the Pronger deal, to which Chase famously told Twist "the rent just went up"). It's nice to say I got to see Gretzky play, but it's way cooler to be able to say I was there for that fight.
I was at that game too. One of the most memorable games I've ever attended.
I was there as well. The Kiel Center went insane when he blasted that first goal past Jason Muzzatti.
Love this idea for a series. Can't wait to see one on Brodeur.
Thank you! I am thrilled that somebody is finally covering this. Not many people even remember Gretzky as a St. Louis Blue, much less talk about it.
Do Mark Messier for the Vancouver Canucks. Great vid btw!
That what I said
I could give him some great insight into that
I stopped watching hockey during messiers time in Vancouver
Those were dark dark days
That could also be a Buyer's Remorse candidate.
@@astroboyvr The two headed monster of Messier and Keenan destroyed the Vancouver Canucks. It was because of those two that Pavel Bure wanted out.
As a canucks fan......please don't lol
Can't believe Gretzky didn't stay put, having Brett Hull as a linemate and Tony Twist as an enforcer!!!!!
It was managment isssue. Him and Mike Keenan didnt get along and the GM wouldnt get rid of him. So we went to play with Messier again.
@@birdiec Yes, but Keenan was also the GM so you mean ownership...
and he had a reason to stay! His wife is from here and wanted to stay home, but NOOOOOOO Keenan had different ideas
2 Words: Mike Keenan.
@@birdiec Mike Keenan WAS the GM.
Thanks for using my concept for a video! hope this series can continue
Great idea! My suggestion would be Kariya and Selanne on the Avalanche. Both player still in their prime on a stacked team. Just didn't work out for either player or team.
He should watch the the season doc on CZcams.
Love this !! Do Brian Leetch with Toronto/Boston or Mats Sundin as a Canuck
Leafs LEGENDS Brian Leetch and Ron Francis.
I love those day when Leetchy came to the leafs
Sundin will always belong in his Nordiques jersey.
@@TheIslandDivision 4 seasons with the Nordiques and over a dozen with the Leafs (then that weird one with the Canucks). Mats is a Leaf through.
How weird Leetch looked in a Leafs jersey LOL! But he was fantastic in his short stint in Toronto. It's funny, he was there only a few months yet was the best defenseman the Leafs had in decades! I always remember how surprised Leafs fans were at how good Leetch was not only offensively, but defensively as well! Truly one of the most UNDERRATED defenseman ever! P.S. Fuck Glen Sather for trading Leetch on his BIRTHDAY no less. Scumbag.
Daniel Alfredsson plays almost 20 seasons with the Ottawa Senators, and then comes contract talks in the summer of 2013. Ottawa offers him a small one year contract worth around $1 million. Detroit then offers Alfredsson a one year contract worth $4.5 million, and then this was the darkest days in Ottawa Senators history. Daniel Alfredsson was initially supposed to wear #11 with the Detroit, but Daniel Cleary, who also wore that number backed out of an offer from the Philadelphia Flyers, in which Cleary returned to Detroit. Daniel Alfredsson almost had to wear number #24, but since Daniel Cleary had a lot of respect towards Daniel Alfredsson, he gave up his number and wore #71. Ironically, Daniel Alfredsson Red Wings jerseys with #11 were almost made shortly after he signed with Detroit.
Man those old Jofa helmets are like looking back at 1970s school photos (they're super dorky)
Great video and a great idea for a series. The few I could think of doing next is Guy Lafleur as a NY Ranger, Ryan Smythe as an Islander, Brian Leetch as a Maple Leaf, Pavel Bure as a Ranger, and Scott Gomez as a Canadien
Nice work. After Gretzky joined the team for that playoff run, the Blues held their training camp at the New England Sports Center in Marlborough Massachusetts. I was living one town over at the time and was excited to see the Great One up close in a smaller setting. He was not there and now I know why!
I think I still have an old VHS tape laying around somewhere of Gretzky's final game. one of the only things I can remember my dad going out of his way to tape when I was a kid. It was a surreal day, and just to add to the weirdness, it was also my 10th birthday. Strange memories...
Joe Nieuwendyk, Ed Belfour, Jarmoir Jagr, or any other number of randoms that ended up at the Panthers would be worth watching for sure
Great idea. I always found it strange that there is no Blues Jersey on the wall at his restaurant in Toronto. :)
It's so crazy to me that I remember him joining the league when I was a toddler. Watched his whole career and now realize he has been retired now for longer than he played.. YAY. I'm old.
And this is why it took until 2019 for St. Louis to win the cup. How you don’t choose the Great One, over a coach is beyond me. Smh.
Rob Ray playing his last season with Ottawa. Football, Thurman Thomas spending his last with Miami.
Great idea, and very well put together execution. Definitely looking forward to more of these.
A few ideas for future episodes, in no particular order:
Vincent Lecavalier in Philly & LA.
Olaf Kolzig in Tampa Bay.
Paul Kariya & Teemu Selanne in Colorado.
Marty Turco in Detroit.
Martin St. Louis with the NY Rangers & Calgary.
Dwayne Roloson in Tampa Bay.
Cam Ward in Chicago.
Dominic Hasek in Ottawa.
Scott Neidermayer in Anaheim.
Ed Belfour in Florida.
Mike Smith in Tampa Bay. [THIS PLEASE!!]
How was Neidemayer the right player on the wrong team? He won the cup and the playoff MVP.
@@kozmeetorez It's not about level of success, as much as just having that random outlier season after spending a whole career in one place. Scott spent nearly 20 years in NJ, so yes, the random last bit in Anaheim would seem like the wrong team when taken in perspective.
Tomas Plekanec should be an interesting one. He wasn’t the face of Montreal but was there for his entire career until he got traded to the Leafs. Which even as a Leafs fan was weird
"NICE TURTLENECK, PLEKAN--oh, wait..."
Do Selanne and Kariya on the Avs
Mike Modano as a Red Wing, Messier as a Canuck, Selanne and Kariya as Avs, the list is endless.
01:29 - Gretzky looks just like Sean Penn here. Specifically, Spicoli from Fast Times and Ridgemont High.
Chris Pronger in Edmonton for your next episode in this series.
Runner up: Trevor Linden at the New York Islanders
No Trevor linden as a Washington capital
Pavel Bure in Florida, Daniel alfredsson in Detroit, there are some
Peter Forsberg as a Flyer.
Wayne Gretsky left and eventually Brett Hull because they had a monster as coach named Mike Keenan. Mike Keenan did have a point such as thinking the Bues were too soft especially with grinders being wanted to dig pucks out of the corners. He also wanted a more physical team. Keenan's personality however was so bad Gretsky could'n't stand it. The Blues missed out on years with Hull and Gretsky.
Do Ed Belfour in San Jose or the reunite of Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne in Colorado! that would be soooo nice
I think it's a good idea for a video series, subscribed!
9:13 he also reunited with the man, the myth, the legend, Jeff Beukeboom
You watch TSN don’t you
804 GP 30 goals .legendary alright,hehe.
@@markdemell3717 those aren’t good stats but he was a defenseman
@@bighossofficial2903 just bardown the rest of tsn kinda sucks
@@peytonpatenaude9587 He was a bruiser and a good one.
Very well done
I would like to see more entries in this series. My hope is to see one on Bobby Orr to the Blackhawks.
Jagr on the Caps. I was honestly thinking of suggesting the Jagr trade for Buyer's Remorse, but considering that the short term issues (the Pens getting a batch of dead-end prospects, the Caps getting half the expected production and all of the cancerous drama that characterized Jagr's later years in Pittsburgh) are canceled out by the long-term effects (both teams being put in position to win draft lotteries as prospects like Ovi and Sid reached draft age), I didn't know if it would work for that series. But Caps Jagr seems tailor-made for this, seeing as he was envisioned as "the missing piece" on a team that had a lot of pieces from a relatively recent Finals appearance, only for the team to stall and ultimately undergo a firesale.
You make excellent content
Looking forward to Lindros or Leetch! (Leafs Legends)
Don't forget fellow leaf legends Ron Francis, Alex Mogilny, and Owen Nolan
There’s a good reason why Mike Keenan works in Russia.
I think the Russian culture works well with Keenan's hard nosed style of coaching.
Yeah his style of coaching was fine for the 80s-90s but it just wouldn’t pass in today’s league
Selänne on the avalanche was a thing
The Kings actually started 95-96 off strong. They were 10-5-5 after 20 games. But Rob Blake got hurt (again) leaving Marty McSorley as the #1 defenseman and shots against skyrocketed. Goalie Byron Dafoe played very well early then started to play like the backup he was. Plus the Kings had no depth at center behind Gretzky. Their second line often had guys like Dmitri Khristich and Eric Lacroix. Younger players like Vitaliy Yachmenev (a rookie) and Yannic Perrault got off to great starts and faded. After that start they were 8-26-5 until the trade and were not well enough off financially to trade for help. After 20 games the talk was an extension for 99 but after another 20-30 games he was ready to go. Gretzky had over 100 points on the season even with that poor team (he still had Kurri and Robitaille on his line....even though they were aging they could still score). That Kings team just completely disintegrated after 20 games.
Of the 3-players traded to the Kings in this deal, Craig Johnson was the only one who did anything substantial, playing in 10-NHL seasons with several teams. Vopat and Tardif saw limited NHL action but played most of their careers in the minors (AHL, IHL) and in Europe. The #1 pick the Kings received in the 1997 NHL Draft never panned out nor did the 5th round pick from the 1996 Draft the Blues sent the Kings. However, hindsight being what it is, the Kings shed a fair amount of salary with Gretzky's departure, which was pretty much necessary at the time as the authorities were closing in on then Kings owner Bruce McNall for fraud. McNall went to prison not long afterwards, the NHL ran the Kings for a time then found other ownership and eventually the Kings won their 1st Cup in 2012. Meanwhile, the most interesting part of this entire video (to me anyway) is the fact that Blues management sided with Mike Keenan instead of Gretzky in the battle of..."either he goes or I go." Had the Blues known that they were going to part with Mike Keenan halfway through the next season anyway and stuck with Gretzky, the Blues may well have won a Stanley Cup in the late 1990's under the guidance of future hall of fame Head Coach Joel Quenneville. What could have been...
Mike Modano: the Red Wings' Hometown hero.
Right team...wrong player..Mark Messier and the Vancouver Canucks. Greatest leader in pro sports my ass...
There is an article a couple years back in "The Province " a Vancouver news paper.
What about Mike Hoffman's time with the sharks? Lol
or Erik Karlssons time with the sharks
LOL Good one
One player that had the bulk of his career in St. Louis was forward Bernie Federko. After it looked like he would finish his career there, at the last second, he ended up getting traded to Detroit. Not exactly the way he hoped it would end.
Brian Leetch in Toronto
Ray Bourque, the Avs legend
Loved seeing Stevie Y in the picture! One of the greatest Playoff OT goals of all time.
next Hasek, please, the reason I´m watching now hockey, looking back at the feelings a get from that sabres series against dallas....
2nd Robin Lehner, my motivatjng factoreregarding this video would be more like A: Prove me wrong: Robin Lehner, is the toughest Goaltender out there!, prove me wrong type of video, for more suggestiuons regarding my experience, please contact me in private
@@fatguy_mike Ray Emery could 1 punch KO Lehner.
@@ECESW no doubt, when I have the mindset of someone who wants to be an destructive force.....
@@ECESW Not a chance that Emery back when he was alive would've been able to even land a proper punch on a 240 lbs 6'4 swedish monster that was mentally unstable with rage issues at that time.
Andy made him Captain right away?? I was not aware of that
I remember when Gretzky became a free agent. I really wanted to see him come to Pittsburgh, even though i knew he wouldn't. Just to see him and Lemieux playing together would've been awesome, even passed Gretzkys prime.
What ever happened to David Clarkson and Mason Raymond?
I really enjoyed this episode. Speaking of right player, wrong team, you could add Grant Fuhr on the Kings to the list. That was an odd one. Paul Kariya on the Avalanche also sticks out in my mind.
Keenan didn’t last much longer in St. Louis getting fired early in the 1996-97 season. As I recall recall Keenan was turfed just a few days prior to Christmas. This prompted a Calgary Sun sports cartoonist named Dave Elston to draw up a classic strip. It depicted the back side of Keenan as he left through a door marked “Exit”. All this while a group of St. Louis players in full uniform were singing “We’ll Have a Blues Christmas Without You!!”. Just one of many stops for “Iron Mike” during his rather illustrious coaching career. This included his final NHL coaching stint here in Calgary who signed him to a three year contract and fired him after two seasons.
That Redwings great... Mike Modono
Grant fuhr season ending injury in the first round of the 1996 playoffs was probably the major reason why the blues were not a Stanley cup contender anymore after the first round.of 1996 postseason. Hull and Gretzky were doing their part well.
Doug Gilmour in a Habs uniform, just never looked right to Leaf fans.
True, but he did a good job for the habs
As a Habs fan it looked great to me
1:42 Gotta love that Tikkanen grin! Lol
Yes, Broduer and The Great One did play for the Blues.
Do Tony Espo in Montreal
When I was a kid there was this other kid I knew who was like a total know it all type and was like “Gretzky was most famous for playing for the rangers” and that made me so mad and it started a massive argument between me and him and ended our friendship. Calling me a casual hockey fan would be very generous, of the many sports I watch I probably am least interested in hockey, but even I know that 99 is most well known for playing for the oilers AND THEN the kings.
I like it!
Also Brodeur and any trades my wings have made Wendel Clark,Daniel Alfredson,Mike Modano.
Just goes to show , everyone hated Keenan
Gretzky is still a big fixture for the St. Louis Blues. He married a local girl, owns a house here, and endorses the team. He goes to Blues games every now and then, too. You’ll see Blues fans wear his jersey at every game.
Local as in LA? lol Nowadays, Gretz endorses pretty much everybody.
What if Grant Fuhr hadn't gotten injured too?
Phućking Kypreos
Had no idea Marty was on St. Louis.
Brett Hull was a Coyote?
Guy Lafleur in Quebec
they argued over why the other person should get the captaincy, one of the many reasons hockey is the most respectful and most beautiful sport in the world.
What I find so cool is that my Dad actually went to a game when they played edmonton! We still have the ticket, 17 or 27 games right?
I remember those days
It would have been GREAT if The Great One could have played longer for my Blues! They should have fired Keenan! The main reason being, they fired him anyway, early in the next season! My mind boggles at just how things would have gone with Gretzky alongside Hull, MacInnis, Pronger, etc. for another year or two or three, with the great Coach Q. Maybe it wouldn’t have taken until 2019 for the Blues’ first Cup? Maybe?
Didn't they fire him because he started pouting on the bench on national TV during a blowout loss or something?
We got Turgeon the following season and at their respective stages career wise they were pretty much at par players. Blues needed a better goalie. Fuhr wasn't going to get it done. Also even though we gave the Red Wings tough series they were always clearly the better team.
Pavel Bure for the Rangers, Pat Lafontaine for the Rangers, or Trevor Linden on either the Islanders, Canadiens or Capitals would be a good next part in this series
I’ll never forget St Louis Gretzky because of his last shift as a Blue leading to my team getting a cup
Huh? The Red Wings didn't even win the Stanley Cup that year. The Avalanche did.
The canucks almost had him signed. The deal was verbally agreed on but then owner John McCaw kept telling pat Quin to get the paperwork done.....they kept harassing Gretzky and he kept assuring the deal was done ...he eventually got annoyed and cancelled the deal.
Daniel Alfredsson and the Detroit Red Wings. That would be a fun video.
Wayne Gretzky only left because of Mike Keenan. He almost re-signed too. It wasn't the wrong time. Keenan should have been fired in order to keep Wayne Gretzky.
That was my 11th birthday that Yzerman OT goal agaisnt STL
Wayne Gretzky on the Blues was the best thing ever. If he wasn't on the Blues, Yzerman couldn't blow past him and score the single greatest Red Wings goal.
Wayne Gretzky had it lose it Yzerman picks it up
Yzerman moving blue line chance SCORREEESSS!!!!!!!!!!!!! STEVE YZEREMAN, DETROIT WINS!!!!"
also will you do one on the greatest Arizona Coyote. Pavel Datsyuk
yes it's a joke
edit for missed word
yeah they signed him for a playoff run. I got his jersey that year, still have it.
He played for the Kings for 7 and a half (rather 3/4) seasons. NOT 5 and 1/2.
Yeah you’re right...my bad!
I still have the SCORE Pinnacle card at my disposal(1996)!
I wonder how valuable it may have become!
Mike Keenan was a jerk with regard to his behaviour towards Wayne Gretzky!
Some music in the background would go a long way in these videos
From one of your shots, Brodeur and the Blues. That episode should also includes Jordan Binnington.
Do one about Mike Modano with Detroit!
I know it was repetitive but the story was good so would u do another video with the zamboni game
Do John Leclair in Pittsburgh.
You should just do the entire career of Jaromir Jagr for this series. His entire career after he came back to America in the last 2000s is nothing but wrong player right team.
Brett Hull in Phoenix
Guy Lafleur would be a good one
Should've went to Vancouver
Bure-Gretzky-Mogilny that would have been scary
Also had a way better coach back then and Vancouver had just been to the finals the year before so we still had a younger team still ready to win
I used to have Brett Hull GT, which is like, a steerable sorta snow deal... you know what it is I'm sure
hey odd man rush can u make a whatever happened to jmorme iginla (ik i spelled it wrong)
Do Dominik Hasek with Ottawa
I actually think that this is a good idea to do this series
It's kind of a shame that Mike Keenan and Wayne Gretzky couldn't see eye to eye on a number of things, or that St. Louis decided to keep Keenan at expense of losing Gretzky, because of the bitterness that Gretzky had for Mike Keenan
Mats Sundin has to be next
I may like the blues but that first Stanley cup for them was amazing. But they should've not played the bruins for it.
Hey, going into Beantown for game 7, nobody thought the blues would prevail; but they did, a well - earned championship
@@richardkey4289 yeah I see your point. you may disagree with me but I felt insulated by them beating the bruins to get that cup. By insulated I mean 1970. P.s. this doesn't mean I hate the blues just trying express how I felt with that first cup.
Do Adam Oates for the oilers
Great video! As a wings fan that has probably seen Yzerman's OT goal a thousand times, kinda a missed opportunity not mentioning Gretzky's turnover that led to the goal. I hate the idea of siding with Mike Keenan, but Gretzky was a bit of a defensive liability in that game.
👍 I was shocked he miss that too.
I honestly didnt think Greztkys defense was that bad. Atleast not on the goal. He kept him to the outside. Id give up that shot all day. It literally had to be perfect too. I always thought Greztky took to much heat for that goal.
that "turnover" was so overblown.
@@GooseGumlizzard yeah it wasn't nearly as bad as the one he gave up just prior that led to a grade a scoring chance from I believe Fedorov. He wasn't good in that game.
