  • In late June of 2010, 19 year old Artemi Panarin was left undrafted by every NHL team in every round of the draft. 5 Years later in 2015, the Russian winger made his NHL debut in 2015, where his 77P rookie season not only earned him the Calder Memorial Trophy, he finished 9th place in scoring across the entire NHL!
    So how did this unknown player from the other side of the world go from undrafted to the league's rookie of the year? Watch to find out!

    When I saw that my beloved Rangers had paid Panarin over 11 million a year in free agency I was like: wow thats a lot of cap space for one player. Hope he's worth it. A few years later I can say that it was a bargain. His passing is outrageously good, and I think he has really helped Adam Fox and some of our other key youngsters development. What this video didn't get into is that he is by all accounts an awesome dude, who had to overcome tremendous childhood poverty to get where he is. Everyone in the league who knows him sings his praises. If the Rangers win the cup in the coming years he will have A LOT to do with it.

    One of the most impressive things on Panarin's story is his upbringing. Saying he came from humble beginings would be quite inaccurate, I would say he grew up dirt poor. His first skates as a child were old beaten up adult skates his grandmother found abandoned at a train station, they had to be stuffed full of newspaper so that Panarin could use them. He didn't play with actual hockey gloves until his early teens, he had to use leather mittens that were reinforced a whole bunch of duct tape and once he finally got his first hockey gloves everyone was shocked how good he was as those makeshift mittens he had to use before gave him no feel whatsoever on his stick.

      Dreams, keep dreaming.
      It's about having the talent and then the drive and lots of support around you. At the end of the day, you need to have the talent. You can dream all you want about wanting to do something, but you can only go so far as your talents take you, that's in every sport/profession.

    The main argument I hear against Panarin winning the Calder actually has more to do with Connor McDavid. The argument was that McDavid was among the league leaders in points-per-game as a rookie and almost certainly would have won the award had he not broken his collar bone. He was the more outstanding player.
    I think people who make that argument have a point. I would not have had a problem with McDavid winning that year. McDavid is obviously the greatest player of his generation and had a rookie season that likely would have been comparable if not better to Panarin's had he been healthy.
    But you can't award a trophy based on what you think they may have done. It sucks McDavid got hurt, but you have to be on the ice and do things, rather than coast on reputation. Based on what they both did, Panarin deserved the award.

    • @baiqi44
      @baiqi44 Před rokem

      Yeah, that was my thing too. I wasn't dissatisfied with Panarin winning the Calder because of his age or his linemate. It was because of McDavid. Everyone knew McDavid would've ran away with the Calder had he not been injured halfway through the season. Many could tell the McDavid was going to be a generational talent in the making in McDavid's rookie year. How many rookies average more than a point per game in the NHL and while only being 18/19...
      I know if we go with the rules of best season by a rookie, then Panarin wins it, but should he? He's pretty good and all, but that's like taking the Calder (and every all-time rookie stats) from Gretzky in the NHL because he wasn't eligible to be a rookie in the NHL in Gretzky's first year as he was a pro the year prior. McDavid, although playing half a season, should've still won it in my personal opinion. They really should change the rules to allow for best rookie season to play at least 25 games in the season (25 games for obvious reasons).

    • @ATinyPillow
      @ATinyPillow Před 3 lety +1

      SupremePrestige : Not exactly. He was playing for the Indianapolis Racers when Peter Pocklington signed Gretzky to a "personal services" contract, then the Oilers became an NHL team and Pocklington brought Gretzky to his Oilers team. Many disputed this move and complained that Gretzky needed to enter the draft but Pocklington argued that his "personal services" contract with Gretzky amounted to Gretzky being property of Pocklington's Oilers and his argument was reluctantly accepted by the league and Gretzky therefore did not enter the draft.
      .

    • @ATinyPillow
      @ATinyPillow Před 3 lety

      SupremePrestige : Yes, except for that fact that you did not mention that he "skipped" the draft mainly due to his "personal services" contract to Pocklington. If you recall when the Oilers became an nhl team, all the other team's managers complained and stated that Gretz should have to enter the draft and Pocklington argued that Gretz was essentially his property as the contract was for "personal services" to Pocklington and was signed prior to the Oilers becoming an nhl team so it should take precedent over Gretz's "requirement" to enter the draft. The league relunctantly agreed with Pocklington's stance, those are the details of how Gretz "skipped" the draft with the crux being Pocklington's "personal services" contract with Gretz as this type of contract was unusual in that it wasn't a typical contract between a team and a player, it was a contract to an owner.
      Personally, I think Pocklington signed Gretz to this type of a contract to himself, all the while knowing that the Oilers were going to become an nhl team and by signing Gretz to this type of contract would allow Pocklington to keep Gretz out of the draft and as an Oiler.
      Wasn't trying to rain on your parade but with the unique contract details involved, I thought it would be helpful to mention it.

    Players aren't even close to being fully developed in their draft year.. When players are drafted teams are generally drafting "potential" which is why of course there are guys like Panarin or other players that went undrafted or went very late in the draft whom went on to be stars in the NHL...
    As a Hawks fan it was funny when Bread was here and he was consistently portrayed as a "rookie" when he already had 6 professional seasons under his belt - and every time he was portrayed as a rookie he would laugh, shake his head and say "no rookie", lol...
    But yea, I don't find it unusual that some players aren't noticed until they're in their early 20's , but the good thing about that is that players whom aren't fully developed until later usually have long successful careers....Look, players mature at different ages..

It will make you look a little better than you were. Not every player is shit because they play with a star. There's also the guys who get goals from being in front of the net. The Goal suck comments are stupid because it's a rough place to be and most goals come from that location. When you get a player who likes or is good at playing there you keep him. If you find a player who's really good at supporting guys who are pure goal scorers you keep them in that position because not everyone can make a star look even better. How good they look playing with a bottom 6 guy is irrelevant.

    Your take on why Panarin won the Calder is just bad. He was not head and shoulders above his competition. The only reason he won is because the most skilled rookie of that year injured himself and only played 45 games. If Connor McDavid had stayed healthy he would have won the Calder. And I'm saying this as a Rangers fan who love Panarin.

      Panarin is a great player in his own right but like you say McDavid is head and shoulders above him had he play the whole year that year it would have not been close
