Thank you so much Dr. Gardner. I am sharing this with my daughter as an example of some of the videos she should watch as she makes her way through nursing school because it gives some insight to the world of pathology. I believe the best medical professionals have a diversity of knowledge in their tool belts. I am also sharing it because at 26 I had a melanoma removed, and now at 28 yrs. my daughter had melanoma removed from her ear several months ago. More recently, she has recurring and painful chalazions, as well as an unknown lump on the side of her neck. Fortunately (or unfortunately) one of my first Google searches of the two occurring simultaneously returned sebaceous carcinoma. Wading through medical journal articles is beyond me so I turned to CZcams and yours is one of the first I found. While not yet directly applicable, it's good for someone with a history of skin cancer to see a small portion of the decision tree dermatologists and pathologists must navigate. Thank you again.

I am sorry to hear of her melanoma diagnosis. I can’t think of any obvious association or link between melanoma and sebaceous carcinoma, and I will say that although not impossible, sebaceous carcinoma in a patient under 30 is exceptionally rare. I can’t recall ever seeing a case that young. Even under 50 years old is very rare. Yes sebaceous carcinoma can sometimes mimic chalazion but chalazion is much much much more common that sebaceous carcinoma. Please have your daughter see an ophthalmologist or dermatologist for guidance and to decide if any other workup is needed to be sure nothing is getting overlooked, but in the meantime I hope you can find some peace knowing that the statistical likelihood of sebaceous carcinoma in her age group would be extremely low. Best wishes for good health to you and her both.

So my dad had a sebaceous carcinoma on his bottom eyelid which the doctor thought was a stye for a few years. He’s now had his eye, eye socket, salivary glands and lymphnodes removed - followed by a few rounds of radiotherapy. What’s the deal there? I know he’s gonna die, just looking for like, what the deal is with this kind of cancer, and what it can do!
Like, is this rare? Or is this a regular thing?
