Wow! You've only gone and bloody done it again! The best Volca FM tutorials on the web and now a collection of patches that really showcase the little box of magic's capabilities too. Korg need to start paying you because they wont find a better brand ambassador for the KVfm. Thanks to your tutorials I now (sorta) understand how most of the Vfm works but I still can't make the machine sound like the ideas in my head (time will tell). This collection of patches should give me a better idea of how to craft sounds. Thanks.

I picked one up today thanks to you thank you for the awesome free patches they sound beautiful I hope you don't mind there might be the odd question about it. With a bit of work that sounds really good for Strings and perhaps pads. Just one more question I was wondering if your editor was easier to use than the stock one if there is one which one would you recommend please. For someone beginning with synthesizers I've been a guitarist for over 20 years just decided to expand my Horizons as it work I have a minilogue monologue volca keys now the volca FM volca beats modal craftsynth 2.0 and 2 pocket operators. Thank you! Great patches and the service Synthmata itself is awesome! The only feature I'd like to suggest for Synthmata is to make preview a bit more convenient. E.g: we open one or few .sysex files and Synthmata renders a list of opened files. Single click on a filename in the list automatically loads it into Volca FM. So we can quickly browse through patches and store only necessary ones.
thanks for these. they are way better than even the ones i got from my massive dexed library. eventually i will have to learn to make my own either in dexed or on the device. unless theres an easier way. anyway, i've had and sold the volca keys, volca sample, and volca modular, even though i loved all of them but i bought this one maybe two weeks ago and it is incredible. very smart move. you are the man. keep it up

Haha, it a LOT smaller and lighter than a DX7 too, which is the main reason I sold my DX7II. Of course my DX had some extra features the Volca does not have, such as 16 note polyphony and the ability to play two patches together, or have a keyboard split with one sound on the left of middle C and another on the right. Having said that, the Volca sounds different, its own subtle sound. The sequencer and the velocity slider are great performance features the original did not have and the editing interface is great, much improved from the DX7. The DX7 was a lot rougher and noiser, especially the original Mk1 DX7. I'm a fan of Dexed as well, definately more hifi and a better interface than the original. There are some sounds that sound better on the hardware, the lofi D/A convertors have not been cloned exactly (yet!).

Rather kindly Korg gave me the opportunity to create some official patch packs for the Monologue and Minilogue over the last couple of years, which meant I did get paid for my patches - which is an amazing honour and not something I ever thought would happen when I started the channel!

I'm not sure how I'd go about synthesising one but I think you could come up with something interesting in that mold - though how convincing it'd sound might be up for debate!
Thank you so much for these! I use them in FM8 by Native Instruments. Melloglass is my favorite. One thing I take away from your presets is that I need to work more with detuning the operators. I have tended to just use whole integers.
+Kristoffer Sundberg thanks for checking them out. Great to hear they work in FM8! Yes, slightly messing with the fine tune really expands the sound in interesting ways. Remember that you can balance a weirder tuning with a lower operator level too!

Dude, you did really a great job. Thanks for sharing this to us. Its awesome! I got the FM a few months ago and started to play around, lots of fun. So I start to make some patches by my self with your Synthmata. It works great and I can imagine the work behind it. Really cool! Thanks :) I like the TirbeBass of your patches, its a nice one. But there is one thing what I can't get. Always when I'm trying to make some deeper sounds like TribeBass with the Snthmata or if I load some of your patches in the volca, its high pitched. I mean to high pitched. May I'm to stupid :D But I guess there is something I make wrong. Even if I cange the octave, Trans, velo, LFO or the Knobs I can't get a rudimental sound like TribeBass. If you have any idea I would be glad for a hint :)

Hi there just a question I hope you don't mind the volca FM you obviously have some and you're example how easy is it to program sustained sounds rather than Bell type sounds or short noises which I have mostly heard out of this. Can you get a ethereal noises or evolving noises with this machine please it's my least favourite volca but maybe I need educating. Only because I've got plinky plonky machines and I'm not saying that's all this can do apart from your patches I haven't heard any or many sustained patches. It's on special here do you think it's worth the outlay because over here 2 Korg volcas almost equal one microfreak in price. I don't necessarily need such a complicated machine that's why I'm considering this maybe you can twist my arm😁😉
FM is great for pads and evolving sounds. The envelopes are super long, and there are 6 of them (one per operator). Add reverb for extra fun. FM does take some learning, or, yknow, you can just generate patches automatically: czcams.com/video/ROCDnJ1bJB8/video.html
Great sounds! Many thanx for sharing! I had so much fun with the Greyroompatch. I put it through a reverb pedal and WOW! what a sound. It sounded like some other-worldly piano being played in a spooky cathedral or something. How long does it take for you to create one of these patches? Ive been spending hours trying to make some patches myself but still need some more wisdom on how but I analysed some of the above patches and I noticed the relationship of algorithm and which ocillator feeds back really influences your sound a lot. Im going to mess with that tonite. Hopeully Ill progress a little further. Thanx again!
+an3z that's exactly the vibe I was going for with that patch! I think some long delay would also be pretty awesome on that one. The patches take usually somewhere between 20 minutes and an hour. But a lot of that time is spent jamming with them and refining how they react across the keyboard and with velocity. My favourite ones always take longer because I'll just sit and play them for minutes at a time and forget what I'm doing! I'm going to do some videos soon where I build some patches from scratch to try and show my process when aiming for particular sounds. I might also live stream some more ad-hoc patch creation on my Facebook page, so if you're interested in that, make sure you're following! If you don't mind me asking for a recommendation, you've made excellent patches for both the Microfreak and Volca FM and certainly know more about synthesis than I ever will, I'm looking to grab a new Novation Circuit Tracks to make the centerpiece of a DAWless setup. I want to pair it with a analog monosynth (that I already own) and then something to expand the sound a bit. Would you recommend a Volca FM or a Microfreak to be used as a accompaniment to the Circuit as far as expanding the sound palate?
I think that for hands-on control and range of sounds, I would go for the Microfreak if it was one or the other. Both of them would benefit from additional effects, but I believe on the new Circuits that you can run stuff through the inputs and through the effects?
First, thanks for your work on these - they look amazing and I’m sure we’ll get them to work. The file you have are one program at a time and they are in .sysex format. The ones I have imported using Patch Base, Volca FM Buddy, and another desktop editor are usually in .syx form. These are usually bundles of 32 different programs. Open In does not work with any of the iOS programs that handle sysex files for Volca FM. I’ll keep trying it and see if I find one that works.
What I'm discovering is that no software seems to support the (perfectly good) single patch format apart from me! It's specified by Yamaha and works if you just play the MIDI to the Volca (that's how my Synthmata editor works), but for some reason it seems like everyone else chose to use the 32-patch format (which is a pain). I actually have partial support for it already in my editor and hopefully I'll be able to re-dump the files in this other format for those trying to use external editors fairly soon, but in the meantime - try the Synthmata links if you want to edit them on screen, or just use a straight sysex/MIDI player and aim them at channel 1 on whichever interface your Volca is plugged into and they should get picked up! Sorry for the inconvenience!
Oscillator Sink - Thanks so much for your efforts. One thing i would suggest is that if you have all the patches loaded on your Volca, you might be able to do a dump or import them using the other software in bank form. I will try to use one of the other sysex programs I have to see if I can import that way
+StormJH1 that's only possible if the Volca is modded to have MIDI out (which I do intend to do, but just haven't gotten around to). Weirdly it's one of those situations where me actually building that in software will probably be quicker and cheaper!
+Mr Feenix if you want to keep it you'll have to save it (press save once, choose the slot you want to save it in, then press save again). If you just want to try them out, then no, as long as the settings are right in synthmata and the Volca FM is hooked up correctly, it'll be sent automatically for you to try. Does that all make sense?

I tried loading these into PatchBase, but it’s saying the files aren’t sysex. They’re great sounds though, I really like haunt pad, outran and grey room.

Any chance you would release the “init” sine wave patch? The one you use in the tutorial videos I mean; so I can follow along as you make the sound design alterations. Request: Ooh! Nearly forgot... Some KVfm patches have distortion/white-noise. How's that done? Also, is it possible to emulate 8bit fuzz/artifacts in FM synthesis?
+Dino Goldie the white noise is pretty easy - just over modulate a carrier, preferably with out of tune and high ratios. So for example, on an algorithm where you have a carrier, modulated by a modulator which is also modulated by another modulator, set the Modulators levels full, turn up the coarse tuning and then mess with their fine tuning - you should have noise in no time. Operator feedback won't hurt either. But I'll demonstrate that in the percussion video(s)
Hello again... You mind if I record some of your patches so they be broken up into individual note samples and used by folks that use the Volca Sample unit? Im gonna be recording the Model D, Wasp and Yamaha Reface CP and YC so the Volca Sample folks can have a bunch of sounds to use... A guy on the VolcaSample forum on Reddit says he will break the recordings up into smaller samples and etc so other folks can use them... Was thinkin id record the FM as well so folks can have those sounds too along with analogue, EP, Wurl, Clav and Organ... But my 2 FM units are gonna be loaded up with ur sounds... So figured id ask heh...

@@OscillatorSinkSounds good... I ended up going with 2 FM units so im gonna load up 1 of them with 32 of ur patches. Then I figure with the other unit maybe keep a few stock patches and get a bunch of others from other sources as well or do some with Dexed. Out of the percussion sounds I only ended up going with Perc3, Perc5, Perc8 and Perc9. As those were what kinda fits the sounds and styles I would use. Good to know I can ignore those as their already in sample form...
Sadly, some of the cheaper USB-Midi cables just don't send sysex - this is also a problem that people find with the Keystep and Beatstep Pro as well. Really, my only advice is to see if you can find or borrow another interface to try. In my experience anything over about 30 dollars is fine. Sorry I couldn't give you a more useful answer than that!
I downloaded this first patch pack and wanted to load and save the Springpad program but when it loads onto my volca it automatically names itself and sounds like unwellbell. I loaded unwellbell and they do seem like copies of themselves. Really wanted to have the springpad so let me know if it's on your end or mine!

Ghostdub and bcktchime also have the same duplication problem. BUT when i followed the sharable links on the excel sheet it allowed me to use the correct patches!
You can use a loop back midi device to send the patches to dexed. Dexed understands the format when it's sent as sysex, but for some reason won't accept it as a file.

i cant load Springpad or Ghostdub using your Synthmata site. Almost all of the others worked fine but the springpad one loads under its real name on the site, then when i send it to the volca, its called unbvellbell and ghost dub is renamed to the one before it in the folder.i cant get the sounds from either of them, mislabeled or otherwise. I also tried loading them all into Dexed, but none of them would load. it says the files are corrupted
The dexed thing is normal - it only accepts loading cartridge file formats whereas these are single patches. The mislabelled patches are weirder... I know people have used spring pad at least as I've seen it in videos. For clarity, are you trying to load it using the sysex download or via the Synthmata link?
@@OscillatorSink figured it out. it was because i was using midi channel 16, because that's the one i used for my octatrack to volca midi channel. when i switched to channel 1, it worked properly. my stupid fault for not following instructions. thank you for your service
If the patches have been extracted to single patches. Most that you'll find online are in cartridge format however (32 patches in one file - even if it's only one patch and 31 empty patches...)

These sound amazing. I downloaded them, but they won't load to my Volga using Dexed or SysEX on a Mac, the files are either greyed out or the software claims they are corrupted. Any ideas?
+Lawrence Vaughan hey there! Thank you, glad you like them. A lot of software doesn't seem to like the single patch format I use (they expect the cartridge format). Have you tried just using the Synthmata links? You'll need Chrome, but other than that it's super easy!
Hey Oscillator Sink, quick question. So I am trying to use Synthmata to upload some of your patches into my VFM but I get a message 'Could not get midi access'. I'm using a Roland UM-ONE usb midi interface, Google Chrome, everything seems to be in order.. I know it's a long shot but I figured I'd ask anyway. Thank you!
+dairylandbogurt hmm, are you running anything else that might be taking control of the MIDI (usually a DAW)? What that error usually means is one of: there's not a class compliant midi driver available / there is, but it's locked by another application. So two things: is the Midi device showing up properly in other software? If it is (and I hate to be that guy) try restarting your computer and going straight to Chrome to see if it works then. Let me know how you get on.

I believe that there's a retrokits rk-002 firmware that can do this. But if you tot up the cost of 2 plus the cable and want to play it with a keyboard or outboard sequencer anyway, you can probably find a used DX7 for around this price.
I think I am just going to go for digitone TBH. I have the TX81Z but something FM easier to program would be nice. Yeah 2x volca FM here is 500 AUD for new, plus the cable, the digitone is more like 995 AU but it has eight voices in one box and has more functions including proper midi i/o and patch storage. Hi. Can you help me? My Volca FM arrived this week. And It is Fine. But when I am sequencing, it doesn't record properly. It skips some notes, and kinda auto-adjusts the timing/spacing between them. There is a way of making It stop deciding for me?
+Erick Hetfield what you're hearing is the effect of quantising. There are only 16 steps in the sequencer, and all notes in a sequence has to land, exactly on one of those steps. If you're playing in between the steps it'll get nudged to the start of the nearest step. That's basically how most sequencers work. You can get sequencers with more steps or higher resolution - the Volca Keys in 'flex' mode kinda falls into the second camp, but ultimately each note has to end up on a step - that's quantisation, and that's what you're hearing. Does that make sense?

Good evening, I downloaded the programs as a zip file but I have no idea how to import sounds into the volca fm. At my disposal I only have a midi interface but I don't know if it is okay and how I have to attack it. I am also Italian and English, I can't understand it very much and from the posts I can only get a minimal idea. Could you not explain step by step how to do it? Hi there. Probably the easiest way to get the patches onto your Volca is to use the Synthmata links on my website. As long as you're using Chrome as your browser, it should be as easy as plugging your interface into your computer and the Volca, going to the Synthmata page, selecting your midi interface if it isn't already and that will send the patch. All you nerd need to do then is save it to your Volca. If you want to use the sysex files in the zip file then you'll need to send them using a sysex tool. I recommend Elektron C6 as something that is free and simple.
@@OscillatorSink I tried to do as you say. I inserted usb into the pc then I connected din midi output to the volca input. I turned on the fly in midi mode channel 1. the site recognizes the interface, however, when I press save on the site, nothing happens. I did not understand connections well and what should I do to save them.
I've had lots of issues trying to get played back patches to work - they work fine from another Volca but it's really sensitive to the level and in all the times I've tried doing it that way I've had it work only a handful of times.
Oscillator Sink yea I just read about that. A recording wouldn't be high enough resolution to capture all the amplitude changes. Then CZcams's audio compression would further distort it. That's probably why I can't find anybody sharing patches in that way.
@@holzi224 only chrome based browsers support WebMidi. So Chrome, Chromium, Opera, New Edge, stuff like brave etc. should work too, but I've not tested them.
Well I downloaded your zipped patch collection. I then visited Synthmata in Google Chrome. I chose to "load a file" and clicked on one of the patches. But then all I got was a popup box saying "File appears to contain valid sysex data." I know my MIDI interface works because when I click "init patch," Synthmata changes my Volca FM to the init patch. However, no matter which sysex file I choose, I keep getting the "File appears to contain valid sysex data" popup and nothing changes on my FM. Any ideas?
+Dino Goldie first off, do you have the same issue with just using the links rather than loading the sysex? If you do then it's a complete mystery, but if not - just try changing a value in the interface (just turning an operator on then off) and that should trigger the page to send the patch - let me know if that works. I'll go check my code in a few minutes to see if there's an obvious fix otherwise.
Oh, just to check - once you've chosen the file, are you clicking the "Load Sysex" file. You need to click that after you get the "Appears to contain valid...." popup other wise it doesn't actually bring it into the interface. Having stepped through it and checked that it works here, I think that you might be missing that step? If not we'll need to try some other stuff, but hopefully that's it.

Badnews: I can't get the sysex files from your zipped collection to load in synthmata. I get aforementioned popup, click on it to continue but the "load sysex file" option remains unavailable on the page. Weird.
@@XTINCTIONation That's the first step. Once you have it installed (updated drivers etc.) if you visit the Synthmata links on my web site, the patches should be sent to your Volca automatically. You'll need to be using Chrome as your browser for that to work. Once they're on your Volca, don't forget to save them to one of the 32 presets (you'll have to overwrite the patches already present).

If you plug your Volca in and follow the 'synthmata' links on my website (using Chrome as it supports midi) they should be sent automatically to your Volca.
Amazing patches! Thank you for sharing. Is there any way to compile these into a .syx cartridge file? I would love to use them in Dexed. I mean I could always patch them by hand copying all the values from Synthmata but that'd take a while.
For dexed, if your DAW supports sysex playback, you can literally put the file on a track with dexed loaded and it'll play the patch. Otherwise, you can use a midi loop back driver and a sysex player like Elektron C6 and send it to dexed that way.

Hello ! Great video, great patches but it is absolutely impossible for me to set them in the volca FM. I can't find any proper and clear tutorial to do it. I found the patches on your site, opened synthmata, opened Ableton Live, I have a Midi keyboard interface, i installed Dexed plugin, the plugin doesn't appear in Live. Each time I try something, it just doesn't work. It reminds me why I stopped music with computers years ago, spending hours to install something to fix something you had to install to fix something else, etc, etc... After 4 hours, I don't remember why I am fighting against a plugin.... and not a single note played... Anyway, 3 hours I am trying to get your patch in my volca... no success... EDIT: now, I'm in the dexed plugin but it manages .syx files and your patches are .sysex files !!!! So it doesn't see the files. Why are the files different ?
Hey Julien, as long as your MIDI interface isn't discarding sysex data, simply loading the Synthmata patch link with your Volca hooked up will send the patch.
The files are different from the ones dexed uses - for some reason it only accepts Cartridge format patches (32 patches at once), the ones I've generated are single patches (and you can send them with something simple like C6, you don't need dexed).

Thanks to your tutorials I now (sorta) understand how most of the Vfm works but I still can't make the machine sound like the ideas in my head (time will tell). I picked one up today thanks to you thank you for the awesome free patches they sound beautiful I hope you don't mind there might be the odd question about it. With a bit of work that sounds really good for Strings and perhaps pads. Just one more question I was wondering if your editor was easier to use than the stock one if there is one which one would you recommend please. For someone beginning with synthesizers I've been a guitarist for over 20 years just decided to expand my Horizons as it work I have a minilogue monologue volca keys now the volca FM volca beats modal craftsynth 2.0 and 2 pocket operators. Do you think this is a good start for experimentation and learning please do you have any advice. cheers mate have a great day
Thank you! Great patches and the service Synthmata itself is awesome! The only feature I'd like to suggest for Synthmata is to make preview a bit more convenient. E.g: we open one or few .sysex files and Synthmata renders a list of opened files. Single click on a filename in the list automatically loads it into Volca FM. So we can quickly browse through patches and store only necessary ones.
thanks for these. they are way better than even the ones i got from my massive dexed library. eventually i will have to learn to make my own either in dexed or on the device. unless theres an easier way. anyway, i've had and sold the volca keys, volca sample, and volca modular, even though i loved all of them but i bought this one maybe two weeks ago and it is incredible. very smart move. you are the man. keep it up

Haha, it a LOT smaller and lighter than a DX7 too, which is the main reason I sold my DX7II. Of course my DX had some extra features the Volca does not have, such as 16 note polyphony and the ability to play two patches together, or have a keyboard split with one sound on the left of middle C and another on the right.
Having said that, the Volca sounds different, its own subtle sound. The sequencer and the velocity slider are great performance features the original did not have and the editing interface is great, much improved from the DX7.
The DX7 was a lot rougher and noiser, especially the original Mk1 DX7. I'm a fan of Dexed as well, definately more hifi and a better interface than the original. There are some sounds that sound better on the hardware, the lofi D/A convertors have not been cloned exactly (yet!).
Hopefully I'll get one of these for Christmas... I've been binge watching your FM videos in advance!

Thank you so much for these! I use them in FM8 by Native Instruments. Melloglass is my favorite. One thing I take away from your presets is that I need to work more with detuning the operators. I have tended to just use whole integers.

I like the TirbeBass of your patches, its a nice one.
But there is one thing what I can't get. Always when I'm trying to make some deeper sounds like TribeBass with the Snthmata or if I load some of your patches in the volca, its high pitched. I mean to high pitched.
May I'm to stupid :D
But I guess there is something I make wrong. Even if I cange the octave, Trans, velo, LFO or the Knobs I can't get a rudimental sound like TribeBass. If you have any idea I would be glad for a hint :)
That just sounds like your operator tuning is too high. Also for bass sounds, try having the modulator tuned lower than the carrier it's connected to.

Hi there just a question I hope you don't mind the volca FM you obviously have some and you're example how easy is it to program sustained sounds rather than Bell type sounds or short noises which I have mostly heard out of this. Can you get a ethereal noises or evolving noises with this machine please it's my least favourite volca but maybe I need educating. Only because I've got plinky plonky machines and I'm not saying that's all this can do apart from your patches I haven't heard any or many sustained patches. It's on special here do you think it's worth the outlay because over here 2 Korg volcas almost equal one microfreak in price. I don't necessarily need such a complicated machine that's why I'm considering this maybe you can twist my arm😁😉
FM is great for pads and evolving sounds. The envelopes are super long, and there are 6 of them (one per operator). Add reverb for extra fun. FM does take some learning, or, yknow, you can just generate patches automatically: czcams.com/video/ROCDnJ1bJB8/video.html

Great sounds! Many thanx for sharing! I had so much fun with the Greyroompatch. I put it through a reverb pedal and WOW! what a sound. It sounded like some other-worldly piano being played in a spooky cathedral or something. How long does it take for you to create one of these patches? Ive been spending hours trying to make some patches myself but still need some more wisdom on how but I analysed some of the above patches and I noticed the relationship of algorithm and which ocillator feeds back really influences your sound a lot. Im going to mess with that tonite. Hopeully Ill progress a little further. Thanx again!
+an3z that's exactly the vibe I was going for with that patch! I think some long delay would also be pretty awesome on that one. The patches take usually somewhere between 20 minutes and an hour. But a lot of that time is spent jamming with them and refining how they react across the keyboard and with velocity. My favourite ones always take longer because I'll just sit and play them for minutes at a time and forget what I'm doing!
I'm going to do some videos soon where I build some patches from scratch to try and show my process when aiming for particular sounds. I might also live stream some more ad-hoc patch creation on my Facebook page, so if you're interested in that, make sure you're following!

The Volca is super cool - it does need a little massaging to get the best from it. Glad you like the patches - I've released another 2 packs, you should check them out to see if you're into those sounds too.
If you don't mind me asking for a recommendation, you've made excellent patches for both the Microfreak and Volca FM and certainly know more about synthesis than I ever will, I'm looking to grab a new Novation Circuit Tracks to make the centerpiece of a DAWless setup. I want to pair it with a analog monosynth (that I already own) and then something to expand the sound a bit.
Would you recommend a Volca FM or a Microfreak to be used as a accompaniment to the Circuit as far as expanding the sound palate?
I think that for hands-on control and range of sounds, I would go for the Microfreak if it was one or the other. Both of them would benefit from additional effects, but I believe on the new Circuits that you can run stuff through the inputs and through the effects?

First, thanks for your work on these - they look amazing and I’m sure we’ll get them to work.
The file you have are one program at a time and they are in .sysex format. The ones I have imported using Patch Base, Volca FM Buddy, and another desktop editor are usually in .syx form. These are usually bundles of 32 different programs.
Open In does not work with any of the iOS programs that handle sysex files for Volca FM. I’ll keep trying it and see if I find one that works.
What I'm discovering is that no software seems to support the (perfectly good) single patch format apart from me! It's specified by Yamaha and works if you just play the MIDI to the Volca (that's how my Synthmata editor works), but for some reason it seems like everyone else chose to use the 32-patch format (which is a pain).
I actually have partial support for it already in my editor and hopefully I'll be able to re-dump the files in this other format for those trying to use external editors fairly soon, but in the meantime - try the Synthmata links if you want to edit them on screen, or just use a straight sysex/MIDI player and aim them at channel 1 on whichever interface your Volca is plugged into and they should get picked up!

Oscillator Sink - Thanks so much for your efforts. One thing i would suggest is that if you have all the patches loaded on your Volca, you might be able to do a dump or import them using the other software in bank form. I will try to use one of the other sysex programs I have to see if I can import that way
+StormJH1 that's only possible if the Volca is modded to have MIDI out (which I do intend to do, but just haven't gotten around to). Weirdly it's one of those situations where me actually building that in software will probably be quicker and cheaper!

+Mr Feenix if you want to keep it you'll have to save it (press save once, choose the slot you want to save it in, then press save again). If you just want to try them out, then no, as long as the settings are right in synthmata and the Volca FM is hooked up correctly, it'll be sent automatically for you to try. Does that all make sense?

Request: Ooh! Nearly forgot... Some KVfm patches have distortion/white-noise. How's that done? Also, is it possible to emulate 8bit fuzz/artifacts in FM synthesis?
+Dino Goldie the white noise is pretty easy - just over modulate a carrier, preferably with out of tune and high ratios. So for example, on an algorithm where you have a carrier, modulated by a modulator which is also modulated by another modulator, set the Modulators levels full, turn up the coarse tuning and then mess with their fine tuning - you should have noise in no time. Operator feedback won't hurt either. But I'll demonstrate that in the percussion video(s)
+Dino Goldie 8-bit is trickier, but with fixed operators you can emulate ring-moddish sample rate reduction

Hello again... You mind if I record some of your patches so they be broken up into individual note samples and used by folks that use the Volca Sample unit? Im gonna be recording the Model D, Wasp and Yamaha Reface CP and YC so the Volca Sample folks can have a bunch of sounds to use... A guy on the VolcaSample forum on Reddit says he will break the recordings up into smaller samples and etc so other folks can use them... Was thinkin id record the FM as well so folks can have those sounds too along with analogue, EP, Wurl, Clav and Organ... But my 2 FM units are gonna be loaded up with ur sounds... So figured id ask heh...

@@OscillatorSinkSounds good... I ended up going with 2 FM units so im gonna load up 1 of them with 32 of ur patches. Then I figure with the other unit maybe keep a few stock patches and get a bunch of others from other sources as well or do some with Dexed. Out of the percussion sounds I only ended up going with Perc3, Perc5, Perc8 and Perc9. As those were what kinda fits the sounds and styles I would use. Good to know I can ignore those as their already in sample form...
i have a usb midi cable and I can send midi data to volca fm but not the sysex file. I tried your web editor but no luck. Can you help?
Sadly, some of the cheaper USB-Midi cables just don't send sysex - this is also a problem that people find with the Keystep and Beatstep Pro as well. Really, my only advice is to see if you can find or borrow another interface to try. In my experience anything over about 30 dollars is fine. Sorry I couldn't give you a more useful answer than that!

I downloaded this first patch pack and wanted to load and save the Springpad program but when it loads onto my volca it automatically names itself and sounds like unwellbell. I loaded unwellbell and they do seem like copies of themselves. Really wanted to have the springpad so let me know if it's on your end or mine!

Ghostdub and bcktchime also have the same duplication problem. BUT when i followed the sharable links on the excel sheet it allowed me to use the correct patches!

how do i open these presets in dexed, as they are not in a cart it doesnt open...
You can use a loop back midi device to send the patches to dexed. Dexed understands the format when it's sent as sysex, but for some reason won't accept it as a file.

i cant load Springpad or Ghostdub using your Synthmata site. Almost all of the others worked fine but the springpad one loads under its real name on the site, then when i send it to the volca, its called unbvellbell and ghost dub is renamed to the one before it in the folder.i cant get the sounds from either of them, mislabeled or otherwise. I also tried loading them all into Dexed, but none of them would load. it says the files are corrupted
The dexed thing is normal - it only accepts loading cartridge file formats whereas these are single patches. The mislabelled patches are weirder... I know people have used spring pad at least as I've seen it in videos. For clarity, are you trying to load it using the sysex download or via the Synthmata link?

Can I use Synthmata with other patches I download from the internet, or only the ones you created?
If the patches have been extracted to single patches. Most that you'll find online are in cartridge format however (32 patches in one file - even if it's only one patch and 31 empty patches...)
This is great but when i am sending for example owghbass Volca is loaded with unwellbell. I am using midi ox to send sysex.

These sound amazing. I downloaded them, but they won't load to my Volga using Dexed or SysEX on a Mac, the files are either greyed out or the software claims they are corrupted. Any ideas?

Hey Oscillator Sink, quick question. So I am trying to use Synthmata to upload some of your patches into my VFM but I get a message 'Could not get midi access'. I'm using a Roland UM-ONE usb midi interface, Google Chrome, everything seems to be in order.. I know it's a long shot but I figured I'd ask anyway. Thank you!
+dairylandbogurt hmm, are you running anything else that might be taking control of the MIDI (usually a DAW)? What that error usually means is one of: there's not a class compliant midi driver available / there is, but it's locked by another application. So two things: is the Midi device showing up properly in other software? If it is (and I hate to be that guy) try restarting your computer and going straight to Chrome to see if it works then. Let me know how you get on.

3 voices just ruins this thing.. is there a way to polychain 2 for 6 voices? This is what I do with my two tetras, and i get 8 voices.
I believe that there's a retrokits rk-002 firmware that can do this. But if you tot up the cost of 2 plus the cable and want to play it with a keyboard or outboard sequencer anyway, you can probably find a used DX7 for around this price.
I think I am just going to go for digitone TBH. I have the TX81Z but something FM easier to program would be nice. Yeah 2x volca FM here is 500 AUD for new, plus the cable, the digitone is more like 995 AU but it has eight voices in one box and has more functions including proper midi i/o and patch storage. Hi. Can you help me? My Volca FM arrived this week. And It is Fine. But when I am sequencing, it doesn't record properly. It skips some notes, and kinda auto-adjusts the timing/spacing between them. There is a way of making It stop deciding for me?
+Erick Hetfield what you're hearing is the effect of quantising. There are only 16 steps in the sequencer, and all notes in a sequence has to land, exactly on one of those steps. If you're playing in between the steps it'll get nudged to the start of the nearest step. That's basically how most sequencers work. You can get sequencers with more steps or higher resolution - the Volca Keys in 'flex' mode kinda falls into the second camp, but ultimately each note has to end up on a step - that's quantisation, and that's what you're hearing. Does that make sense?

I downloaded the programs as a zip file but I have no idea how to import sounds into the volca fm. At my disposal I only have a midi interface but I don't know if it is okay and how I have to attack it. I am also Italian and English, I can't understand it very much and from the posts I can only get a minimal idea.

As long as you're using Chrome as your browser, it should be as easy as plugging your interface into your computer and the Volca, going to the Synthmata page, selecting your midi interface if it isn't already and that will send the patch. All you nerd need to do then is save it to your Volca.
If you want to use the sysex files in the zip file then you'll need to send them using a sysex tool. I recommend Elektron C6 as something that is free and simple.

I tried to do as you say.
I inserted usb into the pc then I connected din midi output to the volca input. I turned on the fly in midi mode channel 1.
the site recognizes the interface, however, when I press save on the site, nothing happens.
I did not understand connections well and what should I do to save them.
How did you save the patches? There is no midi out on it nor usb

Can you upload a video of the audio of clones of the Volca FM, ya know where you press edit>export all ... So I could just plug that into my Volca FM
I've had lots of issues trying to get played back patches to work - they work fine from another Volca but it's really sensitive to the level and in all the times I've tried doing it that way I've had it work only a handful of times.
Oscillator Sink yea I just read about that. A recording wouldn't be high enough resolution to capture all the amplitude changes. Then CZcams's audio compression would further distort it. That's probably why I can't find anybody sharing patches in that way.

@@holzi224 only chrome based browsers support WebMidi. So Chrome, Chromium, Opera, New Edge, stuff like brave etc. should work too, but I've not tested them.
Well I downloaded your zipped patch collection. I then visited Synthmata in Google Chrome. I chose to "load a file" and clicked on one of the patches. But then all I got was a popup box saying "File appears to contain valid sysex data." I know my MIDI interface works because when I click "init patch," Synthmata changes my Volca FM to the init patch. However, no matter which sysex file I choose, I keep getting the "File appears to contain valid sysex data" popup and nothing changes on my FM. Any ideas?
+Dino Goldie first off, do you have the same issue with just using the links rather than loading the sysex? If you do then it's a complete mystery, but if not - just try changing a value in the interface (just turning an operator on then off) and that should trigger the page to send the patch - let me know if that works. I'll go check my code in a few minutes to see if there's an obvious fix otherwise.
Oh, just to check - once you've chosen the file, are you clicking the "Load Sysex" file. You need to click that after you get the "Appears to contain valid...." popup other wise it doesn't actually bring it into the interface. Having stepped through it and checked that it works here, I think that you might be missing that step? If not we'll need to try some other stuff, but hopefully that's it.
+Oscillator Sink I've just sent you an email but just to recap. Goodnews: Was able to get your excellent patches one link at a time from www.oscillatorsink.com. Badnews: I can't get the sysex files from your zipped collection to load in synthmata. I get aforementioned popup, click on it to continue but the "load sysex file" option remains unavailable on the page. Weird.

@@XTINCTIONation That's the first step. Once you have it installed (updated drivers etc.) if you visit the Synthmata links on my web site, the patches should be sent to your Volca automatically. You'll need to be using Chrome as your browser for that to work. Once they're on your Volca, don't forget to save them to one of the 32 presets (you'll have to overwrite the patches already present).

Afraid not, you'll need a way of connecting your computer to the Volca over MIDI. If you want something inexpensive, I suggest the Roland UM-ONE mk 2.

Amazing patches! Thank you for sharing. Is there any way to compile these into a .syx cartridge file? I would love to use them in Dexed. I mean I could always patch them by hand copying all the values from Synthmata but that'd take a while.
For dexed, if your DAW supports sysex playback, you can literally put the file on a track with dexed loaded and it'll play the patch. Otherwise, you can use a midi loop back driver and a sysex player like Elektron C6 and send it to dexed that way.

Hello ! Great video, great patches but it is absolutely impossible for me to set them in the volca FM.
I can't find any proper and clear tutorial to do it.
I found the patches on your site, opened synthmata, opened Ableton Live, I have a Midi keyboard interface, i installed Dexed plugin, the plugin doesn't appear in Live. Each time I try something, it just doesn't work.
It reminds me why I stopped music with computers years ago, spending hours to install something to fix something you had to install to fix something else, etc, etc... After 4 hours, I don't remember why I am fighting against a plugin.... and not a single note played...
Anyway, 3 hours I am trying to get your patch in my volca... no success...
EDIT: now, I'm in the dexed plugin but it manages .syx files and your patches are .sysex files !!!!
So it doesn't see the files. Why are the files different ?
Hey Julien, as long as your MIDI interface isn't discarding sysex data, simply loading the Synthmata patch link with your Volca hooked up will send the patch.
A couple of notes though: you have to use Chrome or Opera as your browser and some unbranded interfaces and Arturia gear is known to discard sysex.
Alternatively, you can download the patches and send them using a simple midi application like MidiOX or Elektron C6 (both free, I use C6 usually).
The files are different from the ones dexed uses - for some reason it only accepts Cartridge format patches (32 patches at once), the ones I've generated are single patches (and you can send them with something simple like C6, you don't need dexed).
One other thing to note is that file extension of a file is nothing but part of the name. You can always just change the name of the file in future.
Shame it's mostly leadsounds and almost no chord worthy patches
