Adventures in Thyme! - Episode 2 - Transforming Ambience and Drones with the Bastl Thyme+
It's time for episode 2 of ADVENTURES IN THYME! A short series on the channel where we'll be exploring Bastl's stereo digital tape loop machine through a few different lenses. In this episode we take a look at how we can use Thyme+ to completely transform, re-contextualize and animate a drone (coming from the Crows Electromusic Ovum).
Transparency Notice: Bastl kindly provided the Thyme+ to me for free for the purposes of making video on it. I wasn't otherwise paid, and they have not asked for, nor have they been given any editorial oversight of the content I create.

BONUS PATCH - Using Neo Trinity as a Drum Machine?!
zhlédnutí 1KPřed 5 měsíci
Here's a little bonus patch that I couldn't fit into my main video on the Neo Trinity, but I thought was worth sharing. This is a drum machine made out of Neo Trinity and 2 VCAs. The sequencing and all the sounds are being generated by Neo Trinity. The sounds are made by "abusing" LFO channels to run at audio-rate, so this is somewhat of an extension of the self-playing patch I showed in my mai...
Bastl Neo Trinity - A Modulation Mastermind?
zhlédnutí 3,8KPřed 5 měsíci
Neo Trinity from Bastl is a module for generating control Voltage - which is the most generic description of a module I've ever made, but that's because it's a very flexible module which makes it hard to describe in a single sentence. It caters to your envelope, LFO, offset generation needs, but that's mixed in with a very “jammable” approach to sequencing and automation, that welcomes rapid it...
A Small Drone Session (Soma Lyra-8 / Bastl Microgranny / 1010 Lemondrop)

A little drone to ease myself into the endtimes (or end of the year, I forget). The main "motif" you hear at the start of the track is the 1010 Lemondrop granular - a new acquisition that really impressed me when I tried it out at Synthfest a few months back. I'm glad to have added it to my collection and I can see it getting a lot of use. It's playing a "self playing" patch based around a coup...

Timber - Exploring Bastl's Most Underrated Module
zhlédnutí 3,3KPřed 6 měsíci
Timber is a dual waveshaping module combining clipping and wave-folding circuits in a typically "Bastl Way" which combines some novel routing with utility that you wouldn't necessarily expect to find in a module of this type. It is also, in my opinion, Bastl's most underrated module as its ability to transform and animate a signal is huge considering its small size. This video hopefully serves ...

Can i export my patches and patterns from Volca fm2 to PC through this editor?
No, sorry.
@@OscillatorSink maybe you know is any other way to do that?
@@NatLifeSounds when I tested it, the dump feature didn't send the patches over the midi connection (only the Volca to Volca audio dump you can do) I think I mentioned it in the video. So sorry, no, I'm not aware of any way, but I haven't checked recently.
Oh, I like this one. It is right up my alley as they say. I have the OG Thyme and honestly haven't messed with it as much as I should. You might get more texture with more harmonic content going in, too, like with an Elmyra 2, a Lyra 8, or some other thing that can drone.
11:32 Waiting for the reverb pedal. Sounds like a specular tempus.
It's the original (well version 3) Specular reverb.

Dune reference acknowledged.
28:11 I love that you can copy and store LFO2 to LFO1 .. very smart little improvement
You sir, are a bad bad man. Owned the Digitakt since it was released, and still keep learning new ways to keep things spicy. Wonderful. 👏
Does this vst run in Ableton live 10.. Thanks
Should do, but I don't have Live. VST is a standard format though so it should run in any VST host.
Sure. Thanks for replying..
Watched the video till the end - really like it, love how you explain your thought process as well. It seems you also have the digitakt. Which one would you say is the more versatile, and with faster/more fun workflow of the 2? Thanks
The Digitakt is one of my favourite instruments of all time, so I am biased. The Play is quicker to get and iterate on sequences, there's definitely an advantage to seeing more of the state of the sequences at once. The digitakt is more versatile though, and has more fine control if you want to get deeper with the programming (which I do).
Your content is so informative and explained in a way that is easy to understand. I just got a Volca FM2 and I’m wanting to check out the Synthmata site. I have an audio interface that has 5 pin midi in and out. Would I connect my Volca into my interface that way, using the ins and outs of either device? And would my usb midi controller be able to control my Volca, or would I just use the keyboard on the Volca itself? Thanks for your time and I look forward to hearing from you.
Yes, midi out on your interface to midi in on the Volca. You'll probably need to use the built in keyboard unless you have a midi thru/splitter.
@@OscillatorSink awesome! Thank you so much and I look forward to diving into FM synthesis
This was awesome!
Brilliant! Adds another level to an already ingenious device. Thanks OS! 🎶
Hello, how do you save the patch directly in the korg?
On the Volca, press save, choose a preset slot, then save again.
@@OscillatorSink okay thank for your quick answer, btw I love your tutorial, perfect !!
So is Softpop II running Bytebeats? Thank you for the thoughtful videos :)
What is the difference between Thyme and Thyme+ ?
Functionally not much - there are a couple (I think literally two) differences that are detailed in the manual. Sonically I can't directly compare as I don't have the original, but I know it's a completely different audio chip because the old ones were discontinued. Talking to the folks from Bastl they say that it's generally cleaner and more hi-fi at the highest qualities, but can still get dirty like the original.
Oh, and the build quality on the new one is nicer. Better pots, nicer case.
@@OscillatorSink Thanks! So since the functionality is practically the same, I‘ll follow your tutorials. Despite having the original for several years I feel I merely scratched the surface.
what about the special edition mini freak?
what about it?
looking forward to episode II
It's live now 😊
Sounds great! Waiting for mine to show up!
I hope you enjoy it!
@@OscillatorSink it apparently has a little noise which @RedMeansRecording pointed out in his video. Yet, I didn’t hear that throughout most of his video nor do I hear it here. It does seem like most of the video lacks extreme high frequency sounds. Are you filtering out that noise or is it just not that loud or noticeable unless you isolate and amplify it?
@@stossbeats I'm not touching the recording at all in the box, you're hearing it raw. There's noise though, and it's noticeable when there's sparse sounds - but as with anything gain staging will help. It's certainly not at a level that is a problem to me. Noise helps with blending stuff together anyway!
@@OscillatorSink thanks for the honest feedback. Still excited to get mine. Never pulled the trigger on the first but had wanted one since I saw that blue mockup many years ago!
Sounds like a gimbri. Love your work.

Excellent demo, Mr Sink! Your demos are always so informative and helpful. Also, thank you for including the SP2 in this one. I've been wanting one of those for quite a while. I like Bastl's approach to musical creativity. :)

i may have missed it, but how do you go back from a scene to normal just looping one pattern?
12:15 radio scanner sequence ::)
Hi ! I have problems updating and trying to reset to factory setting. I had follow all the steps in the manual and nothing happens. Please maybe could you make some video explaining this two topics ?
I would suggest contacting bastl (possibly via their discord server). I would suggest though, trying a different USB port (or not using a hub, if you are using a hub). If I made a video it would likely look very similar to what you're doing already.
Hello! I have a question for users of this drum machine: So, the body of my unit from below heats up quite noticeably Is this normal? Also the encoders under the display sometimes give erroneous values, for example when adjusting the amount of reverb or filter etc Are there similar nuances in your Drumlogue? 1.2.0 software, also i initialize full reset of device rotate the encoders both very quickly and very slowly, and it happens that I rotate the encoder to the right to increase the value, but sometimes it, on the contrary, abruptly changes downward this is weird Does this happen to you? and this drum machine heats up noticeably in the area of the plastic bottom, somewhat similar in temperature and sensation to heating a laptop
I fell asleep watching this, which is not necessarily a bad thing after all, I guess 🙃
Operation failed successfully.
bro that card they gave with the device was a foreign language, but suddenly everything makes sense. Thank you!
I was looking for a bit of gear that would be good for drones when you come along and tell me I’ve already got one upstairs. I use mine for pop music but now I can drone on and on and on. Nice one, saved me some money your video. Top of the class! 👍
I love your videos man! Thanks for this info!
Awesome trick!
Polara sounds way more hi-fi and open through headphones. That said, the MS-70CDR is the best bang for the buck, as its reverbs sound from decent to good, and it's not an one-trick-pony such as the Polara, plus you can even mix two or more reverb (and/or delay) algorithms in one patch to "cook" your own reverb sound!
Erica synths nightverb pedal was the only thing I found interesting this year.
You've opened my eyes and ears to so many new ways of using this synth. Thank you dearly.
Thank you for watching! Enjoy exploring your new sounds!
Man I love this one!!
Great roundup! You covered a lot of stuff that I missed
Cheers buddy, I'm just trying to do my bit - your dedication to spending as much time at Korg Berlin as possible is an inspiration to us all! Did you get a lemonade out of it?
Thanks for the overview. I backed the Alt, drawn by the clean tones and melodic possibilities so kinda disagree about the need for roughness
My tastes are always towards something more rough, it's probably born out of playing very loud guitars through stacks of fuzz pedals for 20 years! In this case though, it was less about dirt and more about feeling the voices affecting each other in some way - that was more what I was after here. It's a personal taste thing and I still thought it was lovely in it's current state - I spent a long time exploring it at the booth because I was enjoying it.
love this beautiful fm-laboratory! Just started training...
Only wish it could parallel process a stereo signal. Any other recommendations?
Analog Heat is the obvious, but more expensive and much more power option. At the other end, the EHX Operation Overlord has a dry blend control.
No librarian tool, how to import/export patches?
I owned a DX9 for years, great sounds, sh*t menu. Just bought the Volca FM2, and can't wait to dive in, this editor is heaven sent, thanks!
Thank you Alex :)
You're very welcome! Thanks for letting me have an extended play getting lost in Alt, and for chatting afterwards. Good luck with the kickstarter, although it doesn't look like you'll need luck!
Loved this. Thank you! I sat down and followed along and really picked up some new ways of thinking about this device. Are your samples available anywhere, even for sale? I found some kalimbas but once you said the stock acoustic piano samples were too hard, I can’t unhear it 😂
The piano samples are re-samples of a felt piano, I didn't create them, so I can't share them directly - check out Lekko by Felt instruments, it also has some nice half speed notes recorded to tape. The kalimba was just me bashing away on my electric kalimba, but you'll find lots of free samples out there.
