  • Here is my third patch pack for the Volca FM called: "FM Does Analogue".
    I'm in no way suggesting that the Volca FM is going to replace your beloved Moog Model D - it won't even be replacing your Volca Keys! But by aiming for this style of sound I think you unlock some really interesting tonalities that sound at once obviously FM but that are miles away from those classic bells and pads that are so often what FM is known for.
    You can find the downloads for the patches on my website: www.oscillatorsink.com

    I just have to say, you really are a gem in this community. Your sound design tutorials, Synthmata, and patch packs have allowed a lot of people without the money for expensive synths to get all they need from this little box. You've gone beyond just being helpful for the people with the Volca FM, you've redefined the instrument

      Oscillator Sink Oh man. I think it would be so cool to hear some dissonant, atonal kind of stuff. Or maybe some haunting, evolving ambient pads kinda stuff? Oooh or like an FM take on the classic cs80 brass sounds from Vangelis's blade runner.. Maybe like an experimental/ambient theme? That would be so rad!
      I don't really know what I'm talking about or the limitations of FM though so take these requests with a grain of salt :P I can't wait to see what you put out next regardless!

    third time writing this, youtube seems to refresh and i lose my comment!!! thanks again, ossie (osc-sink), for the very pertinent, for me, episodes on analogue sound. i've been noodling with my FM for about a week and i can't help thinking i much prefer the sound of my analogue volca bass overall. but these analogue tutorials have given me a great starting point. i glossed over the synthmata entries initially because i thought i didn't have a midi keyboard but then realised my maschine mk1 could fit the bill. the synthmata website is much appreciated, as i could easily and quickly load some analogue sounding patches and start to fathom how to obtain this kind of sound and begin to see the interrelationships between the parameters, seeing them all together on a page is very instructive. after all, there are 21 parameters per operator, 6 operators (if i use 6), 19 global settings, makes 145 possible tweaks in edit mode per algorithm plus the knob settings! thanks for making this easier. i was debating just trading my FM in for a Keys but i think i'll hang in there since i have this wonderful resource even though the volca fm edit process is a little too painstaking for my taste. maybe that's just fm synthesis in general ....

I use the arturia keystep (brilliant controller) and have the velocity strip on cc41 ( I think) so I can make use of that parameter. Thank you so much for all this audio joy. I recently got the volca keys and although I am really liking it and its tweekability (on-the-fly), I still think the fm is the best and most powerful. All the best to ya.

    I just watched your tutorials on the Volca FM, and some of your other videos. I just love it. I'm going to buy one this weak, to make the soundtrack of my game. Two questions: How do I export my work to a PC? And are you familiar with Akira Yamaoka's work? From Silent Hill series? Any tips for creating a similar sound?

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink  Před 6 lety +1

      +Erick Hetfield in terms of exporting, do you mean recording? In thar case you'll need a sound interface and some DAW software - possibly a subject too large for the comments section! If you mean exporting your patches that you've built? That's actually tricky to do just on the Volca, but check out my videos on 'synthmata', that's a free, browser based editor for the Volca FM, and it makes it really easy to save and share your patches (and means you don't spend the whole time diving through menus).
      I've actually never really played the Silent Hill series, but I'll check some out and have a think. Is there a game or song I should check out first?

    • @Erickhetfield
      @Erickhetfield Před 6 lety +1

      Oscillator Sink Hi, thanks for answering. I was talking about recording. I will look for some sound interface in the future. About silent hill, the first 3 games are the best. Some interesting tracks with cool eletronic sounds are Snow Flower, The Healer and Witchcraft. And some of them have really cool e-pianos, like Cold Blood and True. The back choir things he uses are also very characteristic. You will probably enjoy the bass on O.r.t too. Thanks again for you time.

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink  Před 5 lety

      Hi there - I didn't use dexed for these patches, I used my own system for the Volca FM: czcams.com/video/ysJ_uxxepAY/video.html
      But I'm terms of the same results... The DX7 engine and the Digitone are really very different approaches to FM and the Digitone has a lot "more" sound design possibilities (despite having fewer FM operators, simpler envelopes). So I think I could replicate these patches pretty well although my approach might be very different.
      I do wonder if I'd have *naturally* landed on sounds like these on the Digitone though - the stark differences in the synthesis engines tend to lead you to different sounds.

  • @hardgainer7396
    @hardgainer7396 Před 4 lety +3

    Hey beautiful sounds. How do I get them to the Volca? I tried Dexed in Ableton but cant figure out how to import individual patches like yours, it allows me to upload only whole cartridges, which is syx file, not sysex.

      @OscillatorSink  Před 4 lety

      You can send the sysex files with a basic sysex program like elektron's C6, or better yet just use the Synthmata patch links on my site - as long as you're using Chrome (or a browser based on chrome) it'll send it directly to your Volca and you'll be able to see the settings laid out in front of you.

      Never apologise for asking, everyone has to learn everything for the first time once!
      So what you're looking for is a USB-Midi interface. In a lot of cases audio interfaces will have MIDI connections (for example the Focusrite Scarlett 4i4), but if you just want MIDI, then the one I usually suggest is the Roland UM-ONE mk 2. It's inexpensive and is known to work well.

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink  Před 5 lety +1

      The likely cause of that is the fact that the single patch format that the Volca expects is not actually 100 percent compatible with the DX7 - the downloads are all formatted for the Volca. One thing you could try is using the Synthmata links, switching synthmata to yamaha mode and re-saving? (or if you're just trying to use dexed to send to your Volca, you can just use the synthmata links on their own).

I definitely want to to mess around with these!

    When you do a patch, do you tend to use all of the operators or just a few?

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink  Před 6 měsíci +1

      It depends if I need all of them. If I'm trying to make something that's pseudo-acoustic and requires a lot of expression from velocity, then often it's all of them as they are all contributing to different parts of the sound. If I want to make, like a bass or lead sound that's obviously electronic, then often it'll only be 2-3. But yeah depends on the patch. If I recall correctly, in this pack most of them are used most of the time.

    any chance of providing recordings of the audio sync signal for those of us without access to midi?

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink  Před 6 lety

      Unfortunately I never managed to play the signal back reliably from any system - it seems to be very sensitive to levels etc. I believe that Cuckoo also mentioned having this issue when he released his patches. That's why I built a system for editing the patches off unit (synthmata) to stop the patches from being "trapped" on the unit. If you've had success transmitting patches via saved audio files though - I'm open to hearing tips...

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink  Před 5 lety

      I believe that dexed only works with full cartridge files via the load dialogue rather than the individual patches, but I know that people have instead put the sysex file either on a midi track (if your daw supports this) and played it into dexed, or used a virtual midi loopback device to load the files in using synthmata.
      The other thing you could try is contacting the developer of dexed to ask if there's a way for them to enable the loading of single patch files. I had a poke around in their source code and, from memory, I believe that the code is basically all in place but disabled. It may be a really easy fix for them!

      +Jason Milton Dexed (currently) only supports the 32 patch "cartridge" format for loading directly. The format I use is the single patch format. I believe if you just play sysex into Dexed (use a sysex fader in logic) and put dexed in receive mode you can load it that way.
      I'm working on getting support for the 32 patch format as well, but it might also worth contacting the Dexed developers because from poking around their source code, I think they basically have the support already there - its just turned off!
      In the mean time, give the synthmata links a go. You'll need Chrome on your Mac but they should work.
