    Roland synths like the Jupiter, Juno, SH-101, TR-808, and many more... all names we recognize immediately! Why not the Saturn-09 and RS-09? Maybe the answer lies in the method of synthesis, "divide down synthesis"-- something maybe less desirable to the synthesis aficionado? Perhaps the lack of market for these synths comes from their era or simplicity of synthesis and design. These synths can be picked up for somewhere around $100-$200 these days, whereas their more famous cousins like the Juno or Jupiter sell for thousands more. Take a listen to both of these and let us know if you think these are worth it for the price, or if they deserve more recognition in synth history! In this video, we also compare these divide down synths to the Behringer VC340!
    Sound demos start at 9:03

    I don’t know what he’s talking about, but these general sell for at least $300+ on eBay and Reverb… and even those $300 ones are usually poor condition and have issues.

      yup well now in 2023 on audiofanzine or on reverb, there going for 800-1k when pristine. the second version of rs09 (has the the sa09'functions in it, in fact it's both of these in one if you like).

  • @rachelar
    @rachelar Před 3 lety +18

    I had both. Although the RS09 has more functions, the Saturn was rarer I thought and had sentimental value. Apparently you can't get the sounds of the Saturn on the RS09, so I kept the Saturn. Plus it confuses people, it's a Roland Saturn, not a Jupiter lol. What next? Uranus.

    Sorry but saying I'm better off spending $600 on the Behringer than $100 on an SA-09 is just wrong. Even if the clone can "do" more, just look at them! Especially if the SA-09 is the one in this video, it's pristine!

    I've had two RS-09s. I love it--the sound has a lot of character and depth with the strings and the organ played together.
    Especially with TWO kinds of ensemble. Plus you can send another instrument into it, it has a raw signal out, sustain pedal input. It gets trashed on Vintage Synth Explorer--but they have no idea what the fuck they are talking about

  • @RealAqua
    @RealAqua Před rokem +3

    Why are you comparing the Saturn to the Behringer? The Behringer is a copy of the Roland VP 330.

  • @richnewman
    @richnewman Před 3 lety +5

    Listening to this, the Saturn sounds better than the other two to me. Fuller sound and I really liked it when that bit of grit was introduced into the sound. I bet if you kicked it down to the lowest octave and played it like a mono synth it would have that classic Roland sound. Also, that chorus on there is the same coveted effect that's on the Juno's.

    • @rachelar
      @rachelar Před rokem +1

      The RS09 is better or more versatile for strings because it has the attack and envelope modes. But the Saturn has more organ sounds

  • @SiliconBassist
    @SiliconBassist Před rokem +1

    With the right settings, the RS-09 punches well above its weight class regarding sound character, despite being much more limited than other more well known members of the RS family

    I love my rs09 and I think it is an injustice that it has been forgotten since it has beautiful audio and was used by bands like the cure on their first albums and by modern bands like the horrors, it was just not valued, the beheringer is equal to everything that the reissues of that brand are .... reissues.

    What about the SH-09, would it be the mono bassline to go with the SA-09 and the RS-09 to add polyphony with independent controls per oscillator in each machine?

  • @baddriddimworkshop
    @baddriddimworkshop Před 8 měsíci

    in 2023 they have been acknowledge, and the rs-09 in the west, when perfectly clean, sell for close to a grand.... to go with a vocoder, like a korg or a MAM it's just the perfect synth, and i'm shure with a few addons/mods, you can end up with something pretty awsome. i'm thinking filter or phasing, or even some type of mutli band filters, but the attack/enveloppe problem could be solved by using a follower that has it's own attack.... but even, with some fx, they make pretty nice organ/ensemble units that will sit in the mix and have that typicale roland analog polyphonic flavor to it...
