how shall i start...for years i avoided mitsouko ( i smelt only the new version and never impressed) ut recently i bought an old version ( 1956 -'60) in a pristine condition and sealed. i swear it s one of the most beautiful perfumes ever. yes, a MASTERPIECE !
It's the only fragrance I've ever tried that has almost made me cry. I'm talking about the extrait of the '50s. I haven't smelled anything like it in my life, it's absolutely amazing.
I love the fact you are featuring a “vintage” perfume. I have Mitsouko and it’s one of several Guerlain masterpieces that I own.. When I wear Mitsouko, I always hear, you smell wonderful, what is that?? It’s totally unisex. Im glad you liked it. I would recommend Jicky, created in 1889...first perfume to use synthetic oils. It’s Lavender, vanilla, etc, with civet. Vol du Nuit...green, green. L’heure Bleue, and of course Shalimar which today many men find very wearable. Guerlain perfume house was the Rolls Royce of houses, in its day, using the best ingredients. Ingredients not being used today, so and older bottle has real sandalwood and oakmoss. It’s hard to get your hands on old releases. People buy them up immediately. If you need some suggestions of reviewing others, let me know.
Excellent review Peter in one of the perfume world’s most iconic fragrances. One of my all time favourites especially the vintage Mitsouko, a timeless classic which I wear on occasion when my heart yearns for it. You’ve explained the Guerlainade trait quite brilliantly “ the powderyness, fizzy sparkling like effect.” All the great vintages of Guerlain will have this. L’heure Bleue, Derby, Habit Rouge, Heritage, Chamade, Jicky, Nahema, Samsara and even Shalimar. When I apply vintage Mitsouko on my skin the dry down gives me an earthy woody leathery vibe with a tinge of fruit and it’s sublime. Please do more vintage greats bro!😃 Thanks for this and well done!👍🙏
I own the Umbrella bottle from the 70s and i think that it's one of the best versions of Mitsouko. The vintages, in general, are one of the most interesting way of discovering the perfume as a form of art. You should try Crêpe de Chine by F. Millot, Cravache by Robert Piguet, Whip by Le Galion, and many others. Great video and description, Peter.
Nice change of pace Pete. Really enjoyed this video and now I also feel inclined to check out more of the vintage juices from Guerlain. My favorite from the house has to be pamplelune.
Peter, you're a gem and the best, most articulate reviewer of all, imo. You're credible and knowledgeable, no doubt because you're a perfumer. All the best!
I definitely think it’s a unisex fragrance. I can not detect the peach and my nose mostly detects the oak moss and green notes. For me it has a masculine leaning. It is definitely a unique experience, but feels too dated for me but there’s something magical about trying vintage Guerlain.
Imagine making a very high quality scent and it actually lasts and is highly regarded years later 😮 alot of company's could do with focusing on quality > quantity 👍
Not cost effective for most designer brands anymore, price of naturals are much more expensive than 30 years ago.. prices of naturals rise high, they ban them and restrict them in use, then the big companies then patent synthetic safe replacements you then have to buy from them. Instead of buying the natural anywhere you like, it's a big controlled monopoly.
Loved this review! It's spot on. Mitsouko is timeless indeed. Own it in various concentrations and vintages, both old and new. While I don't really like most recent Guerlain scents, they're doing great work in keeping their classics in fairly good shape, (just my two cents). I wished YSL, Chanel and Dior did the same with Kouros, Antaeus and Poison ... well, better than nothing ... . Current Jicky EdP is very nice, too. Best wishes! Tim
A classic. I really love your review mainly because it comes straight from the heart and such a beautiful feeling. And yes please, make some other reviews of the vintage of Guerlain perfume. Thank you.
Fantastic review Peter! I really enjoy this one! I only own the extract version which is pretty good but am also looking for the vintage EDT...hopefully I get lucky to find one in good condition. Thanks for sharing!
Definitely try the vintage Extrait version... It's really got more depth and facets.. You'll love it... Easy to find them at reasonable prices online :) great review
Nice one man, I have a 90’s vintage sample of this along with l’heure bleu and jicky, i like jicky but noth the other two, i respect mitsouko for what it is but I personally can’t stand it hehe, i just think it smells like very old woman perfume to me. Very good review man thanks!
I also liked this perfume and was surprised I found it quite easy to wear. I was prepared for it to be jarring and difficult from reviews I had read but that was not my experience at all. Would love to smell the vintage. x
Guerlain L'Heure Bleue (1912) is also another classic and was created a few years before Mitsouko (1919). Try it out. Lanier Smith has wonderful videos on both.
I like L'Heure Bleue a little better than Mitsouko. The name - the blue hour - lends a sense of mystery as well. Fascinates me that these two fragrances, created over 100 years ago, are still produced today.
Umm.... peach mixed with oak moss. Sounds very interesting. I think I’ve smelled the newer version at saks’ but it didn’t register much with me. I guess the vintage version is much better. Now I’m gonna have to hunt for that to experience it. Thanks for talking about it.
I got a vintage EDT, but unfortunately my bottle has gone off... The Bergamot turned into an unpleasant leathery kind of smell... Seems to be a common problem, I read somewhere that 30% of the composition is Bergamot. Glad that your sample is still good. You should check out the current version, Thierry Wasser did a really good job at reformulating this one in my opinion.
I have a vintage Samsara and it still smells the same now. Its toooo strong for me. Very cloying. Its why I still have some left. I also have a vintage Coco Chanel. Again very cloying and aldehydic. I can taste it if I wear it. So it stays dormant on my dresser. Lol.
I am seriously thinking about pulling the trigger on a 1960s vintage bottle of the extrait that a local boutique has. The bottle is sealed in the original packaging. Very expensive though. I happen to like the current EDP formulation of this one and can only imagine what a highly concentrated vintage version of this would be like.
I haven't actually not, I'll have to make an effort and compare them. Oakmoss is banned now, so it will be an oakmoss with all the dangerous molecules removed, so I'd imagine at an educated guess that it no longer lasts quite as long as it did 30 years ago. And it's probably not quite as rich as a result... but it will be interesting to find out.
I have like 3 bottles that I don’t really use 😆 one is the dabbing bottle , others one is edp and the other edt.. it is nice and unique though! Thing is I haven’t been in it’s mood for a long time now ..maybe soon i will with the weather change
I love vintage Guerlain. I have been disappointed with the modern versions on many of their scents. Modern Samsara smells like the fancy step sister of bug spray where as the vintage 1980’s bottle that have is just stunning. Shalimar has been destroyed in my opinion. I have a bottle of Shalimar from the 1040’s, 1950’s and 1980’s and they all smell a little different form each other but the best is the oldest. Yes the top notes are not great but once they evaporate the rest of it is truly beautiful. I don’t care if people think it’s old fashioned I just love it. I also have a 1970’s flask of L’Heur Blue eau de toilette. Absolutely gorgeous. The Aqua allegoria line is very interesting too. Many people think they are one dimensional but they have a charm of their own and you can layer scents. I have not tried layering myself yet but I am going to try it. I also have a 1990’s mini bottle of Mitsuke and it is not one I am naturally drawn to but I appreciate it for what it is.
I have a small 2ml decant of the vintage extrait. The citrus notes seem to have tone down sadly, my extrait is dark orange so maybe it's oxidising? Thankfully the rest of the scent is still lovely. I prefer this over Slumberhouse Kiste which was hypersweet on my skin (I brought up Kiste since it's the only other peach scent I've tried). I use to own a small sample of the current EDP but I think it lack the leatheriness and the balsamic aspect that the vintage extrait has (although I wonder if aging has something to do with it). The current EDP was still mossy though, I think Guerlain did a good job in somehow retaining that aspect. Hope you get to try vintage Chanel No.19. I thought that one was unisex too, very leathery and balsamic in the mid and drydown.
Maybe, mine is more of a mellow yellow, not overly dark... pretty much the same as you see in the picture of the bottle on screen. There are safe mosses where they remove the elements that are banned, it's just probably not quite as rich.. and I'd take a guess that it doesn't last quite as long anymore because of it
My mother has a collection of old Guerlain bottles, I thought the bottle was pretty and she still had a sample from 30 years ago.. I didn't want to open her bottles up because they're so old, so I used the sample
For some reason, I can't seem to like Guerlain releases including their supposedly more modern Ideal Series. Their L'homme series smells fine but seems to lack depth or maybe 'incomplete' is a better word for what I had experienced. Bought Habit Rouge EDT and LIDGE blind more than a year ago and til now I still can't seem to appreciate them.
Oh Peter, you made my heart smile with this review! My love for this fragrance is deep. There is something magical about it. I have the newer formulation of the edp and a bit of the parfum and they are both spectacular imo. This is one of the best performing fragrances I own. I agree 100% that Mitsouko is unisex and timeless. The older Guerlains are my favorites. Mitsouko, Shalimar and L’Heure Bleue are fabulous; though L’Heure Bleue is my least favorite; partly bc I only like it in the summer. If you haven’t you should read perfumeshrine.blogspot.com/2011/03/guerlain-mitsouko-fragrance-review.html?m=1
I’ve got a 80s extait Shalimar, and is day it feels even more modern and unisex than mitsouko. Most of the greatest perfumes ever made were made by by Jacques Guerlain.
I am such a Mitsouko slut. I have so many iterations of this scent and it still smells amazing on me and still wraps me in feels. The apex chypre and a classic of classics. Absolute unisex. I have a 45 oz extrait that I am planning to enjoy as long as possible and hope to use it to ignite my funeral pyre. Some perfume people find it challenging or old fashioned but every time I wear it, it is heavily complimented. LHB is another Guerlain classic that is super wearable. LMK if that works for you. IMHO Shalimar is the most delicious fragrance to be worn by a man.
How on earth did they get the fragrances to project and last so long with naturals?? I use naturals mixed with synthetics in my formulas and they're mostly skin scents! I just cant master projection and longevity without using aldehydic synthetics! So frustrating!

From what I can gather online, Guerlain's Vol de Nuit is still worn by Dame Diana Rigg who's acting I adore.

I am going to make an effort to smell more of the older range

Classic designer fragrances were so good. Fewer synthetics and more natural. Wish old designer fragrances would come back.
They never will, brands these days want to maximise profit, by having the cheapest formula
They all smell very similar to me. almost like DEET
To be exact, it was 78% vol.
J aime beaucoup votre chaine, bonne continuation et plein de belle decouverte j espere 🌹
