  • There are many ways to go about incorporating hugelkultur techniques in your growing endeavors. This is only one. We did this mound with things we already had on the property. Mostly its just wood and the soil that was in the location of the mound, with some leaves and rabbit manure mixed with shavings and hay. Its all organic, no chemicals or fertilizers of any kind. I expect this mound to last another 6 years minimum before I need to add anything to it... which will be mostly compost and woodchips. This hugel-mound is specifically for the pollinators in our perennial garden which houses our fruit trees. This mound is placed right in-between three plum trees, two cultivated and one wild. I have three hugel-mounds on the homestead, all filled with just flowers and herbs with some edible shrubs thrown in for good measure. They were all created to attract beneficial pollinators. They are absolutely a sight to see in person. The next one I build will be for food production, most likely honeyberries and currants with some ground cover. Thanks again for checking us out and happy growing!

That is amazing! I love all the critters living there. I have tons of organic material on my homestead I can use to do this. Thanks for sharing.

I've never heard of Hugelkultur before but I love the name! We have a few pollinator gardens in our yard, maybe soon we should give them a refresh with this technique. Great info!

You can also help established beds with sheet mulching/layering so you don’t have to dig anything up… or start a new one 😀
