This is definitely the hardest thing I've ever done.
After training for a year, I finally set off to run my first ever true long distance - you can call it an ultra marathon, or fast packing, in fact, I don't mind what you call it. What matters is that running almost 200km in the mountains was set to be my greatest challenge EVER.
The Peaks of the Balkans is an incredibly beautiful trail, but if you decide to give it a shot, do not go alone, but rather trek in a group with a qualified mountain guide. I highly recommend Outdoor Kosovo, who helped me with some logistics along the route and ended up being my safety contacts: outdoorkosova.com/
I also want to give a massive thanks to Liz, my friend and coach, who encouraged and supported me throughout the whole process. Check out her awesome running-themed Instagram here: / runtoreach

I am 73. When I was 21, I bicycled 700 miles in two weeks alone. I did it one goal at a time, one day at a time. When it was done, I realized what I had done. The fortitude and persistence that it took made me reaiize the strength I had within me. I was not an athlete, just an ordinary person. However, by persisting, I accomplished a big feat. That realization has stood me well my entire life. Do something big in your life. Bigger than you think you can. Persist. You will be a stronger person for it.

@@foodiesmess I also earned three college degrees, a BS in Art and Elem. Ed., A Master of Fine Arts in Fine Art Photography, and a Certificate of Advanced Study in School Business Administration. Each one was a marathon. I had the end goal in mind the entire time, but I concentrated on each assignment, each project, and earning the highest grades. I never took anything for granted, but put myself in the professor's shoes and thought about what they would criticize. When writing papers, I outlined the entire paper first, did the research on each part, put the sections together like chapters in a book, and had a summation and conclusion at the end. I received A's on every one. I am no genius, though I have come to the conclusion that I am smarter than I thought. It took me longer than other kids to lear to read, I always had a problem writing when in HS. and reading comprehension was always difficult. I received average grades. I think I had learning disabilities from being a blue baby at birth, and two concussions as a young child. I learned if I wanted to compete with other kids, I had to work harder. I wanted to attend a four year college and take difficult subjects to prove I was as good as other kids. I think I did that, especially in my passion, fine art photography. I have won first place awards in international competitions, such as the International Photography Awards, had my work exhibitied in London and Paris, and been published in all the most importan publications worldwide. Caring and persistence will get you far. Most people do not have it. My mother said she was amazed at how hard I would try. That is right. I took all the difficult math and science courses in HS, won a NY Regents College Scholarship, which paid full tuition to a state university for four years, and began as a chemistry major, later changing to art to take photography, which occupied all my thoughts. Later, I taught college and HS for 35 years. I told my students that if they want to be an artist, they have to want it so bad they have to taste it, and nothing else can get in the way because the world does not need more artists, so you have to be better than everyone else. Being the best at anything requires exceptional talent, exceptional drive, and exceptional persistence. Sports and Art are very similar. You cannot be a quitter.

This is only the second of your videos I have watched. Just subbed an hour ago, after watching one video. I am a 58-year-old ex-trail runner. My body is all used up, but this was so inspiring, it makes me want to get back out there. At my peak (in 2011) I would typically run 1/2 marathons with 3500 to 4500 feet of elevation gain. Usually in an hour and a half to 1:45, depending on exact elevation. I took up running at age 42 and 5 years later I was at the top of the X-Terra championship for the 40-49 age group. I had a rapid decline after a back injury. Never regained that level of fitness. But this video has inspired me to drop this 20 lbs I put on, and at least give it one more try. I miss it so much. Thank you for reading this, if you indeed did.

I've been in pretty good shape all my life including falls and wrecks, but at 70 my back let me know it was tired. It's been three months of pain. Breakfast, lunch and dinner( I sleep well on my side). Some training and a lot of swimming and as Eva said, you body talks to you and you can listen. I am feeling better and I am thankful. One of the problems with a lifetime of exercise is that you wear your body out. After many years of hill running and 3 Ironman triathlons in my late 40`s, I had to give up running. My back and knees just couldn`t go on. ( I always cried at the finish line, huge tears of relief) Luckily, I can still cycle and walk miles quickly. I miss the running but want to warn younger people to make careful choices. Don`t just run. Cycle, kayak, swim, anything to spread the wear and tear. But never stop!

    • @firstnamelastname8060
      @firstnamelastname8060 Před rokem +4

@@HarryFenton6124 Yep. That all sounds right to me. My back injury was from me being 135 lbs at 5' 8" and doing heavy lifting. Not for sport though. It was repeated lifting of things like 94lb concrete bags and roofing my own place, lifting OSB and super-heavy rolls of tar. That type of stuff. Plus lifting small cars from either end and parkour, becuase I was young and I could, lol! When I run, my back feels at its best. But standing in one place for 2 minutes... no way. But running took its toll on my oldish muscles. Tight as a guitar string and stretching doesn't help.

Great job Eva! I think the hiker you met was wrong about "judging" your timing. You set a great, realistic, but goal- focused, distance for each day that allowed you to toggle between jogging, hiking, walking and having time for a nice lunch, afternoon cool-down in the water... or some berry eating :) People finish a full marathon in 2.5 to 4 hours. You were dealing with elevation changes, uneven (or even loose) rocky ground and a multi-day course, so allowing the full day for every 26 km made it perfect - and in such beautiful rural areas of Eastern Europe!
As a bit of advice, I would strongly recommend you not throw away your maps until your back safely at your home base - besides your water bottle and shoes, your map is your most valuable asset. For the couple of ounces you save tearing off a portion of paper each day it is not worth giving those maps up. In fact I would store those in a sealed plastic bag in my ruck (or military- grade waterproof map case) just to ensure they don't somehow get water damaged and become unusable...in the military we are taught to never give up our map. In you case, what if there were some type of earthquake, or other natural or man-made disaster, were to suddenly occur and you were forced to reverse your course - without access to cell phone or GPS services?
    ... just food for thought.
Looking forward to your next adventure 🏞️ 🐎 🌳

A quote from my favourite books on running, “There’s something so universal about that sensation, the way running unites our two most primal impulses: fear and pleasure. We run when we're scared, we run when we're ecstatic, we run away from our problems and run around for a good time.”

“This is hard, but I can do hard things.” I love this. I’m 32 weeks pregnant and hoping to have an unmedicated birth in December, but I’m doubting my strengths because of how normalized it is to get an epidural. So this mantra of yours is beautiful and inspiring and I will be adopting it in my quest towards an unmedicated birth. Thank you :)

My wife had her last two of five naturally at home with a midwife. It was a beautiful and completely different experience than a hospital birth. It isn't for everybody, but she was mentally strong and prepared. Also, just as Eva experienced a range of emotions on her journey, so did my wife on hers. Best wishes to you and your baby for a great experience!

You got this Claire! Mental power comes into play. I had an unmedicated birth at home with a midwife. I prepped loads with breathing practices, digging deep, positive affirmations that my body and baby knew the best way to come out. I’m cheering you on 💕

    • @cbecketmoon3358

You can absolutely do it. I had both my babies with no pain medication ( my first had to be induced… which makes contractions more (powerful)painful… but I still did it with zero pain meds) I highly recommend any hypnobirthing meditations (listen to every night before you fall asleep) . My mantra was… MILLIONS of women have experienced and felt childbirth for centuries … I want to EXPERIENCE this ( not mask it) I felt like I could do ANYTHING afterward. Its an empowering experience women should not be deprived of. Go for it!
