Part 2: The Rebuild and first start!
August 2022: Seems like economical transport has never been more important!
----------------------
I just happen to have a motorcycle license and now, after a few years away from two wheeled transport ... my 9th Honda CBR. She was tired, unloved, tatty ... but a legend! She actually had a valid but short MOT and I rode her home about 80 miles. Whether or not she should have had is open for debate! Some of the things I found were pretty uncool to be honest.
Anyway ... it's time to give her a fresh chance but I'm trying to do this on a tight budget ... under £1500 all in, and that has to include the bike, tyres, chain, spares, paint ... and anything else she needs to make her safe, reliable, legal and at least somewhere near her former glory. Any savings I can make will generally come through the fruits of my own labour ... and thats the main message and inspiration I hope to give from these 3 videos. If I can do this, probably so can you!
Don't bin it, save it! Make better use of the resources we have. Sustainability, making good and getting the maximum out of what we have is so important for all of our futures.
In order to achieve this I will use any and all resources available to me, taking advantage of CZcams tutorials, bike forums, facebook groups and blagging the odd favour here and there!
----------------------
I took a bit of a punt on the bike, generally trusting the word of the seller and what few pictures were posted. Generally speaking the ride home gave me alot of confidence in her potential, but she was very cheap and the reasons why soon became apparent.
The most urgent issue was the frame, surface rust everywhere. Not yet a structural problem but one that would have killed her in a year or two if untreated. So that was the main job and it necessitated a total strip down ... which also gave me the opportunity to find all of the other problems and give her some long overdue care and attention, not to mention giving me an all new appreciation of what she is, what she can do and, more importantly, an in depth knowledge of her every nut, bolt and mechanism.
I've already fallen in love with her, she's my baby! It is my mission to save her, keep her and enjoy many years of future riding. She's not quite the Honda Fireblades I used to ride but she is truly a legend and she's got more than enough for me these days, as well as doing 60mpg and costing a mere £20 / month to tax and insure (with breakdown cover thrown in) Now THAT is economical transport!
This will probably turn in to 3 videos. I had hoped to do it in 2 but there is a lot of content to edit and I want to make this a useful video for other CBR600F3 owners and (having spent 130 hours on the job) give as much of an in depth insight in to what is involved in tackling this sort of thing for anyone out there considering giving it a go.
------------------
My history on bikes / mechanics:
I've owned ten bikes over the years, starting with a Yamaha TZR 125, and then going through the full range of Honda's 1990 CBRs. 3 CBR400RRs, now 2 CBR600Fs and 4 of the mighty CBR900RR Fireblades.
I changed an engine on one of the Blades once, but that's pretty much it. Never worked on a bike aside from that. I would describe my mechanical ability as 'handy with a spanner'. I've done plenty of services on my own cars, fluids, filters, brake pads, the usual kind of thing. Maybe a rocker cover gasket or a new alternator on the odd occasion, but far from any level of real in depth experience.
So these videos will, I hope, show that if you are able to do those sorts of things, then you can do this too. It's just time, patience and desire to do it. But be under no illusion, this isn't for the faint of heart, know what you are getting yourself in to or you will end up like so many others, with a box of bits and no motivation to tackle what will seem like a never ending task with no finish line in sight!
----------------
Part 1 is the strip down, assessment, fixing problems and getting the frame restored.
Part 2 is the rebuild, the start of some cosmetic fixes and the first start!
Part 3 is the remains of the bodywork, a few finishing touches, a test ride or two! ... and a breakdown of my costs and time.
Hope this is of interest / use to you. It is one of the most satisfying projects I've ever undertaken. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Nice videos , just started a renovation on a f3 with my 84 year old father to keep him occupied. These videos will be so helpful… many many thanks 🙏
Def good video,I need to watch so I cud re install the fuel pump lines and gas lines correctly
LOL. I bet the next bit of baking that measuring jug 04:53 was used for making had an "interesting" taste! 🤣
lol! sacrificed to the garage god a long time ago
Hey congratulations ❤ really enjoyed the 3 chapters. Amazing to be able to see every step, specially the rebuild in chronological order, that's gold. Restoration techniques are also gold. Enjoyed your satisfaction in the end, epic. Gonna go for an F2 soon. Thank you.
cheers, appreciate the nice comment. Been slowly acumulating a full set of the '98 black and silver fairings. Tank lacquer is drying as we speak. Starting to look pretty sweet.

Looking great! Getting the fairings separately? Do you think they should fit perfectly even though they come from different bikes? I sometimes see bikes with badly adjusted fairings
Yeah all separately. They are identical fit is not an issue. The trick with fairings is to keep all the fastenings loose until everythings on then you have some room for wiggle. Cheers for the comments, appreciate it. @@hondacbf2152
@@JohnNorrisMetalSculpture thank you for your replies, really appreciated them! It's beautiful to find such passion for something, so tired from subscriber hungry youtubers. As I said, those 3 videos are so inspiring. Thanks!
good work, not bad for a numpty :)
Cheers buddy. Amazing what you can do with a bit of time and patience. A little every day goes a long way!
I have that bike and lord knows she could do with some TLC. Thanks for this.
No worries glad to share the videos. Really fun project. She looks a little different now (see update vid) Full set of second hand black silver fairings and a repainted tank. Passed the MOT again couple weeks back no issues at all other than chain adjustment wasnt even either side (doh!) Lovely colour scheme, legendary bike! Get on it! I'm pretty handy with tools but a lot of this was first time for me. Only daunting thing was the carbs but even that was just methodical with a good manual. Safe riding, namaste.
Jeezzz m6 bolts with a breaker bar ? 9:10. Nicely restored though.
lol, tightened with alow torque! Just happened to have the right socket on it at the time, good spot though!
Doing a F2 Myself just found your channel, You earned a sub from Me Pal
Cheers buddy. Channel is about metal sculpture really but I love my bikes and this kinda goes with my 'use 100% recycled materials' philosophy and 'make good what you got' principals. Good luck with the F2, I had one of those 20 years ago. Never did any work on it but if I can help in any way let me know. One of the best resources I found is the 'CBRFORUM'. There are dedicated f1, 2 and 3 areas and a whole load of knowledgeable people ready to help. Also a facebook page (I'm in UK) listed as 'CBR600 F1 F2 F3 GROUP UK'. Another really helpful resource, alot of great people there and alot of people selling spares at generally reasonable prices. If you need anything, just ask, you seem to get pretty quick responses. Also found Facebook marketplace useful for second hand bits. Got a very tidy original can for £30 and a brand new in the box set of OEM mirrors also for £30. Send me some pics / uploads some vids! P.S. Part 3 scheduled for 10pm but still processing HD version currently.
Excelent!
cheers
What book do you use for these rebuilds? I’m looking for a book for mine that in depth

where did you get the manual you are reading from?
@beanboy9516 Haynes but I have another original Honda one. Email me I'll send you the pdf
"Anybody can fix that". Well, obviously someone used fish wire to fix...something.
haha I promise you anyone with half decent practical skills can do anything I did in these videos. A good manual and some patience required but there's no rocket science here. The carb is probably the most daunting because of its complexity but really its quite doable. Bike passed its annual test again yesterday. Just needed to adjust the chain sliders a touch otherwise no adviseries! Good old girl!!
why didn't you repaint the radiator!
Because its basically on its last legs. The surround is beyond repair, it's just in the bike till it fails now and I'll replace it.
Selam honda 600f f3 hakkında bilgiye ihtiyacım var yardımcı olurmusunuz
Neyi bilmen gerekiyor?
