    Hey guys! I know no one asked for it but I felt like we could use a light hearted feel good movie and I've always wanted to give The Lego Movie a try so.... HERE IT IS!! I was really sold on the cast and Will Arnett really outdid himself, as did Chris Pratt and Will Farrell (what are with all these double letters lmao)
    ANYWAY... I had a blast watching it and was definitely thrown off by the animation at first since I had never seen a Lego movie before or played any Lego games. So it was completely new to me lol
    BUT I really liked the story and it grew on me enough to make me tear by the end so all in all, worth the watch!! I hope you guys enjoy watching with all of my dumb comments hehe!

    The part where Will Farrel's character asks his kid, "If the construction guy could say something to Lord Business right now, what would he say?" , knowing that Lord Business represents him, and his son looks him in the eye and says, "You don't have to be the bad guy", just kills me. Imagine realizing that your son thinks you are the villain in his story. I would feel like the biggest failure as a parent. It gets me, every time.

    So the writer-directors of this movie didn't get nominated for Best Animated Feature and everyone said it was one of the biggest snubs of the year. But they ended up making an Oscar out of Legos, proceeded to make "Into the Spider-Verse" and won the Oscar by a landslide. Amazing real life story.

    • @MarkHWillson
      @MarkHWillson Před 2 lety +37

      IMO, one of the biggest snubs of all time, not just the year. The Lego Movie is still in the top tier of films of the 2010s, not even just animation. But the animation itself kind of even still doesn't quite get the credit it is due. Truly remarkable stuff.

    • @drakke125Channel
      @drakke125Channel Před rokem

      spider-verse isn't good animation imo....The Lego Movie deserved all the praise. SOOOOOOOOO much work has been put into that, a lot of stuff only children and lego fans would get due to the experience of just fiddling around with legos. Its rare to see a movie have so much love poured into it.

      @@MarkHWillson It fooled me into thinking it was stop-motion, and I'm someone who is obsessed with LEGO. They added wear, tear, fingerprints and more. The techniques they used with the camera and lighting also really sells the effect.
      Not to mention the clever character rigging where they either detach the arms and legs, or they substitute other LEGO pieces to achieve unconventional Minifig movement. Even motion blur is achieved using other LEGO pieces.
      My personal favorite example is when the tennis ball comically flattens a Minifig in Cloud Cookooland, and leaves behind a few tiles in the general shape of that Minifig.

    I was really shocked at how subversive this was when it came out. A few decades ago, Lego was struggling, and they discovered they could make better earnings by releasing licensed sets for stuff like Star Wars. While doing this saved the company financially, it caused a bit of consternation because the company/toy's ideology had always been about using basic blocks to build whatever you imagined - that was the freedom and the joy of Lego. So, the company went through a bit of an identity crisis, and suddenly some of their biggest customers started to be adults who wanted these big, elaborate licensed sets that they could build and put on shelves - it was kind of the antithesis of what Lego was supposed to be. So the fact that they took all of that stuff and put it into this narrative was really surprising to me. By all rights, this should have been a 90-minute toy commercial filled with dad jokes and toilet humor, but they actually made a movie about creativity and letting go and kinda thumbing their nose at their lucrative licensing deals. It was very surprising.

    • @endless013
      @endless013 Před 2 lety +15

      TBH I can't begin to wrap my mind around how that works, I had one lego set as a kid it was a motor boat and I can understand that kind of toy for a kid at a price a kid can save up for. I fully refuse to buy lego at today prices for myself and would never pay that much for some toy for a kid that comes in a million tiny pieces begging to get lost and accidentally thrown out

    • @umi_grumz
      @umi_grumz Před 7 měsíci

      I think the best part is how the movie doesn't pick a "right" way to play with LEGO
      If you want to go and follow the instructions, go ahead
      If you want to build whatever pops into your head, that's completely fine
      Because at the end of the day, the LEGO play experience is about the freedom to play how you want.

So this movie played an awesome tribute to the classic space and that spaceship in the movie actually has the number on the side that was one up from a famous 1979 spaceship they made. It hits hard because it's a universal message about the power of free thought and imagination (the later only being truly possible in an environment that fosters the former), and a person reconnecting with that through the innocence of a child. I think it's something that most of us hold in our hearts to be true, even if we don't think about it much. Plus, it's so deftly handled in this wonderful movie.

    Morgan Freeman's "write all that down" line was not in the script. Freeman said that after being confused by frequent changes to the script, and it was added as a joke.

    I was born in the late 60s, and grew up with Lego, but not the modern version where everything is based on something or is part of a set. I had a literal bucket of random Lego, and a big, grey mat on which to put them. The mat itself was nothing, it was just the base to hold whatever I could imagine. I always felt that the modern versions were so limiting, telling you what to make, giving you only what you needed to make it, and charging you way too much money for the "privilege" of doing it. So the message of unfettered imagination, of making whatever you can dream of, of not limiting yourself to what fits perfectly together according to the instructions, really resonated.

    All the in-universe stuff in this movie is completely CG animated. However, the stuff happening throughout the credits was actually done in stop-motion. If you ever find yourself taking a tour of Warner Studios you will find the set they used on display there

    You mentioned about the animation looking stop motion like. Well that was the idea, to do it in CGI but to build everything from actual LEGO pieces.
    All those numbers you see by the parts are the actual part numbers LEGO uses.

    Basically this is a movie abt cosmic horror (like call of Cthulhu type shit)
    Emmet sees another world by interacting with a mysterious artifact. President Business collects these artifacts and uses them to do unspeakable and impossible things like erasing someone’s frickin face or permanently cutting off their head.
    Emmet finally gets a hazy glimpse of the other world and returns with impossible knowledge and terrifying comprehension

    It's all CGI animation, but made in a style to look like stop motion.
    The reason is looks so real is because they paid special attention to getting the surface imperfections and smudges correct, like including fingerprints and stuff. Another big reason is because it was the first movie to use ACES (Academy Color Encoding system) which very accurately calculates color and dynamic range.
