    Notaries are responsible for verifying a person’s identity, confirming they are aware of what they plan to sign, and that they are not being pressured to sign a document.

    Here are the important steps it takes to become a Notary Public in CA:
    01:04 Take a Notary training course and pass an exam.
    01:16 Get a passport-style photo. Go to a LiveScan provider to get fingerprinted for a background check.
    01:35 - Submit a completed application form to the CA Secretary of State. Pay the state’s commissioning fee.
    01:53 - Receive your commission certificate from the state. Buy a surety bond.
    01:57 - Go to your county clerk’s office to file your bond and take your oath of office.
    02:05 - Buy your Notary seal, journal and thumbprinter.
    02:35 - Getting Errors & Omissions insurance is completely optional, but it is a step you should consider taking. While Notaries should make every effort to avoid mistakes, if an error is made, having an E&O policy protects you as the Notary.
