- Lesson on Folate Deficiency: In-Depth Overview of the Causes, Pathogenesis, Signs and Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment. Folate (or Vitamin B9) is an essential water soluble vitamin that is necessary for red blood cell development and maintenance, due to it being required in nucleic acid synthesis. There are several categories of causes of folate deficiency including reduced dietary intake, malabsorption, impaired metabolism, and increased utilization. In this lesson, we discuss in detail the many causes within each of these categories. We also discuss the classic signs and symptoms of folate deficiency, the characteristic findings on laboratory investigations, how to diagnose and what we do to treat folate deficiency. We also discuss why folate is important during pregnancy, specifically with regards to neural tube development.

I have chronic folate deficiency and one of the main symptoms I experience is low mood. When my folate levels are good I feel mentally very well, I don’t have depression or low mood or anything like that, but when my folate is low, my mood is low.
florate and bl12are same
@@rajeenarasvin9306 No, they aren't the same.
How much folate do you take?

MTHFR defect runs in my family. Unfortunately my niece got the defect from her father's side as well. A genetic savvy doctor prescribed Thorne Methyl Guard prior to pregnancy and she carried twins almost to full term. Mark was 5 lbs and Penny was 2.9 lbs. Autopsy on Penny's umbilical cord showed a missing artery. After 3 weeks in NICU she came home and overcame digestive issues and is now a thriving child. Her little sister born 2 years later had a normal development because my niece continued with the supplementation.
Which genetic savvy Dr did she see?
@@astromob1 Kadlec Regional Medical Center, Richland Washington was doing the research. Her Dr. Is no longer there.
A medication I wish you included was the hormonal birth control pill which decreases many key vitamins, including B12 and B9

Excellent video! Thank you! Precise and instructive.
not comprehensive though.
0:20 Folate does not come from fortified grains. Fortified grains contain folic-acid which can be harmful when taken long term.
Fortified grains have folic acid, which is synthetic, man-made. I have the mutation of the MTHFR gene and my body does not use folic acid.
@@yellowiris123 you just need riboflavin to fix the MTHFR
@@nomadicexplorers never heard that. I do take methylfolate

I wonder if this is why I have hyperuricemia
Great job young man!
If you lack methylation correct it via supplementing with B2 first. Add B9 aka folate and B12 after like a week of supplementing with B2
So the Methylation issue can fixed by B2? Like permanently fixed?
But what is the best form of B2 to take?
@@edimoelvis9904 the cheapest most common one. Works for me
Great thank you. it helps me a lot.
Folic acid form is in fortified foods, like grains and cereals. This form is harder for many people to use. It can actually do more harm.
Folate form is best.
This is my lesson today. HOW DID YOU KNOW?!
My Doctor has me on Folate, B- complex and B 12 supplements due to having MTHFR mutation. Can you update your video's highlighting this. Thank you
Hi could you please give me more information on what you take please
Kinda shocked that he didn’t mention the MTHFR problem
What is MTHFR I've been suffering with folate deficiency for years & take vitamin b supplements I feel there is something causing this but I don't know know
@@susanfrail9564 Thorne Methyl Guard about $50 at Amazon. Folate and B12.
@MR SKANDAL BEATS 0121 the MTHFR gene mutation. All humans have the MTHFR gene. About 50% of the population have a mutation of that gene. Those without the mutation it is expressed as CC. One C from each parent. So somebody with the mutation can be expressed as CT, TC or TT. I have the TT expression of the gene, so the mutation comes from both of my parents. So I have the more difficult version of the mutation. My body does not process vitamin b9 (folate) well. The folic acid which is fortifying much of the foods in the US, is fake, synthetic, man-made. My body does not use it much at all. I took medicine called Trileptal and I had mouth sore to the bone. Trileptal strips your body of folate and since my body doesn't process it well anyway, I had a major deficiency. The Dr office ran a DNA test and I have this mutation. I hope this explanation helps.
Great video!
Would you include plaque psoriasis as one of the exfoliative skin conditions?
Thank you very much love your videos, hope more terms 🌾☘🌱💐
What could account for an RBC of 5.42 and a hematocrit of 46.6 with a serum folate of 5.0 in a 65 year old female with psoriasis? Wouldn't the RBC and hematocrit be lower?
My wife has the MTHFR gene and has always had nausea in the morning. It was worse when pregnant. We have three children. The first and last were supplemented with *folate* but for the second she used *folic acid*. The second was the only to have a tongue tie and after using methyl folate she no longer is nauseous in the morning. This is just FYI. Who knows if it is a coincidence.
MTHFR it’s not a gene, mutation genes, don’t mutate, it’s a hereditary Passover of a damaged liver, agent, orange glyphosate, DDT mercury, any number of people have tested positive to MTHFR , and then detox the liver and tested negative afterwards, medical research and training is funded and manipulated by the pharmaceutical industry they always put the blame back on the victim, by saying it’s genetic, it’s not.
Can you update this video series for folic acid and furin in covid?
thank you!
very good presentation. I have just been diagnosed with severe folic acid deficiency. I have been on sodium valporate for epilepsy for the last 20 years and never did any Dr recommend any supplementation until the last week when i started to suffer from severe tiredness and feeling dizzy at which point a blood test showed the deficiency.
Take methylfolate so your body can use the folate. Also, ask Dr for a DNA test for MTHFR gene mutation which around 50% of the population has. That could be causing the deficiency.
@@yellowiris123 interesting I would like to ask for this test but here in the UK we can't ask for specific tests. We can only get tests which the Dr feels appropriate.
I would just mention you had heard that a folate deficiency could be caused by genetics. Could that be my problem? Maybe he'll order a test.
@@sajidkhanmahmoodAre you saying that in the whole of UK there is a not a single private Lab for you to go do your own preferred Test? Hmmmm
I'm also on valproate. It angers me that our Drs don't mention any of this. I also read that valproate depletes L-carnitine and inositol. I hope you're doing better now.
I believe there's a growing link with folate issues and the CV virus ,I got the virus and it wiped out my folate big time ,still undergoing treatments
Can you elaborate, please? What symptoms did you have .
How did symptoms indicate low folate?

should never use folic acid instead use the methylated ,5-mthf, variant as 60% got mutations of the methyl tetra hydro folate reductace enzyme and therefore cant in a good way convert folic acid to the active form

i have a folate deficiency from a blood test and i really don’t know why, i’ve never been told i just take folic acid
Genetic conditions also cause issues with low folate, and resveratrol intake reduces folate.
I went to see a psychiatrist for depression a couple years ago, took a swab test and found out (if I remember correctly) that my problem isn't the typical brain receptors being too small to allow serotonin in, but instead my body has a hard time absorbing folic acid, and just doesn't make enough serotonin. I think I was told to try out a B vitamin? Does this sound familiar to anyone? And if so what supplements should I be taking? Thanks
watch NOOTROPICSEXPERT on youtube for the information you seek.
@Ed I've been drinking green smoothies for at least 25 years. Greens are the best way to get folate. I At one point I was not looking after myself. My folate was low. Yes methyl folate is good. I used it when my folate was low. Normal levels now.
I take sublingual b12 5000mcg and sublingual methyl folate 1000mcg every 2 days. You can get both from sprouts. Try it out. Hopefully it helps.
Do you have MTHFR? You need methylated B vitamins.
Is 3.2 low or is that normal (above 3)
How folates are useful for increasing haemoglobin
Folic not folate acid is added to foods in the US. Folic is the synthetic version that people struggle to use.
Also scleroderma can cause malabsorption.
I had pretty severe anemia with low hemoglobin. It was macrocytic megaloblastic anemia in 2012. I've been on Folic Acid 4mg per day every day since. But you only recommended 1mg. Should I question my dose? I've never been told the cause of my deficiency either. I've scheduled an appointment with a GI doc to investigate. Maybe ill find out.
Folic acid is synthetic and should be avoided. Avoid all fortified iron-folic acid produce, there’s been studies done and it’s shown to be horrible for our health!!!!

Another reason is MTHFR.
What is that?
Is that the genetic cause that he barely mentioned but does not cover?
Type A+ blood type people can’t absorb b vitamins well. It’s very common to be deficient for this group
Thanks, this is so helpful. So how do you handle this? Supplementing? Juicing? And what's the reason for the malabsorption? Cheers from Berlin
What about methylfolate supplements as opposed to the fake folic acid?
its not fake, synthetic is different to fake. It is still processable by the body's enzymes
@@pelletey folate is better than folic acid as I've learned.
@@pelletey Don't even bother with folic acid supplements.

How are you doing now? Are you still taking 5 mg?
I developed folate deficiency due to malabsorption caused by daily use of Gaviscon antacid
The medication Trileptal strips your body of folate as well.
Folate is said to be good for nerves.

I have reoccurring folate deficiency and have been prescribed folic acid 3 times by my gp. My gp is adamant its my diet but I just don't think it is.
Folic acid in available from green leafy vegetables. Maybe also consider green barley powder.
Get a test if you have a 5-mthfr mutation. Maybe that's the cause why you can't absorb it
Does taking folate reduce ur b12 levels?
You have to take both to work better function. Methylfolate and methylcobalamin these two forms can cross blood brain barrier.
Yes folate helps the body utilize B12 better . So use both together.
You are an expert on some things, but folic acid isn't one of them.
Never give folic acid... Always supplement with active folate. Many people for many reasons cannot convert folic acid to 5 mthfr. The reasons are many. This guide is wrong.
Stay away from folic acid or any synthetic vitamins. It's worth the studying.
