    The people came and listened
Some of them came and played
    Others give flowers away
    Yes, they did
    Down in Monterey
    Down in Monterey
The young gods smiled upon the crowd
Their music being born of love
    Children danced night and day
    Religion was being born
    Down in Monterey
The Byrds and the Airplane did fly
Oh, Ravi Shankar's music made me cry
The Who exploded into fire and light
Hugh Masekela's music was black as night
    The Grateful Dead
    Blew everybody's mind
    Jimi Hendrix, baby
Believe me, set the world on fire, yeah
    His Majesty, Prince Jones smiled
As he moved among the crowd
    Ten thousand electric guitars
    Were groovin' real loud, yeah
You wanna find the truth in life
    Don't pass music by
And you know, I would not lie
No, I would not lie, no, I would not lie
    Down in Monterey - Alright
    Three days of understanding
    Of moving with one another
Even the cops grooved with us
    Do you believe me, yeah?
    Down in Monterey
    Down in Monterey, yeah
    Down in Monterey
    Down in Monterey, yeah
I think that maybe I'm dreamin'
    Monterey
    Monterey, yeah
    Down in Monterey
Did you hear what I said?
    Down in Monterey
    Down in Monterey
    I said, Monterey, Monterey, Monterey
    Yeah, yeah

I really wish I was a young person during this time. It looks like you guys had so much fun. All I listen is to 60s music like this, I was born in the wrong era. The 60s def seemed extremely magical. I’m extremely sad I missed it, I was born in 1989.

How do you know you weren't there? You have reincarnated from that time and now you long to go back to that time. All you have to do is reach out with your right arm in front of you, close your eyes and it will come pouring back into you. Do it you have nothing to lose and do it when you are moved by the music.

Marc A that would be cool to think about!!!! I have lot of cool 60’s stories from my parents, but they were little kids the 60’s, so not old enough to have partied at these cool 60’s concerts haha. Their young adult years were the late 70s to the 80’s, which I also am obsessed with, haha. The 60’s were def magical for sure though.

There are even more of those real musicians you talk about, you just don't bother digging past the tripe on the radio to hear quality artists in a multitude of genres. Electronic music was also used as far back as the 60s.
Since you probably only listened to the music that was on the radio (great music by the way) , you most likely didn't bother with the experimental stuff going on then anyway.

    • @joeyhuebner10
      @joeyhuebner10 Před 3 lety +3

@Gary Jackson- Rap at it's best can be really impactful, but nowadays it's just the same old story with chicks, fast cars... etc. It happened with rock, blues, any genre you can think of. I mean a band like Zeppelin talked about that but they had the music and vocals to really express themselves in a unique way, not to mention the writing got better as time went on. Same with the Stones and Cream and all those great bands from a lifetime ago.

Brad, and to the others who read this. I am now also 67. Growing up in the San Francisco bay. I had seen it all. The music, the girls, the attitude, of the of the people was magical. It saddens me to know, that a moment in time I lived in, will never be repeated. I was very lucky to have lived in that time period. So the years roll by, and the music now is down right terrible. I have always believed that music video, should help promote the song. Now the videos are a separate entity. They compete for the best video. What is wrong with that comparison ? The song. The song is a backround, to beautiful women shaking their stuff. The song just seens to be the second priority. The music video is rubbish. Famous on to its self. In other words, the song should stand by itself. Sorry, off topic, but, this written. Back in the 60s, and the early 70s, a song stood on its own. How many people bought, it and liked it, was the measuring stick. Now??? It is a mystery to me. My thoughts on a Monday night. So to you all that have commented, I think you see what I also see. The music is almost gone, and what is left? A music video of pretty woman dancing in front of a camera. The song they are playing in the background, is suffering, or worse, people buy an album/CD just for the slick video. The music, be dammed.

She said he was a jerk, I saw what she said watching him on TV, he was a jerk. AHHH, now let tell you my moment of comming to terms: In 1975, I am in California driving down highway 101 just south of San Francisco heading north. I will never forget even the small details of what happened. The radio was on. I drove from Georgia to California. I was in the army, I was going to visit my dad in Windsor, California. I was going to S Korea in about 3 weeks. So while on the road, it was set to AM radio. I was listening to that while crossing the the country. The news comes on. They said that Elvis Presley had died. I did not think much about it. Right after the the DJ was talking about Elvis. Than he puts on this Elvis song I never heard of. He puts on, The Ghetto. I did not change the channel, like normal, I listened to that song start to finish. I lost it, I had to turn off 101 to the SFO exit. Than I pulled off the road, and cried my eyes out. I could not belive the sexey snake, Elvis, ever sung a song like that.... So yes, I love the music I was brought up on. But, even I a hard core rock and Roller likes some of my moms songs, and Tony Bennett, and even Elvis, especially The Ghetto. So I learned the hard way, not to dismiss my mom's generation of songs, I just like mine better. As for Elvis, The Ghetto, Suspicious Minds and even others. I admit I like. This is about Monterey Pop and the music I love. You asked me a question I could not slide a slick answer to you. I think you wanted my truth to the question you asked. I hope you got my answer. The answer may not be right or wrong, but it is honest, from my heart. And all typed, or tapped out on my phone, that is how bad I wanted to answer you. Also note that Eric assembled the Funk group, War. He sang often with them. Don’t let Me be Misunderstood is another of my Burdon faves. It talks about my life. 50 Years ago, the mother of all future Pop Concerts, "The Monterey Pop Festival" HAPPENED !
And what a "Happening" that turned out to be.
I draw from the "blurb" on the great DVD of that momentous occasion, for my acknowledgement of that wonderful occasion, for my homage to Monterey Pop Fest. "On a beautiful June weekend in 1967, at the height of the "Summer of Love", the First & only Monterey Pop Festival roared forward, capturing a decade's spirit and ushering in a new era of rock and roll. Monterey would launch the careers of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Otis Redding (RIP), but just a few among a wildly diverse cast, including Simon & Garfunkel, The Mamas & the Papas, The Who, Hugh Masekela and the extraordinary Ravi Shankar.
Luckily for us this Mother of Pop Festivals was captured on film by DA Pennebaker & immortalized those moments that have become LEGEND. I hold myself fortunate to have the box set as part of my collection & will be indulging in it, celebrating in true style & gratitude for the road that was laid down by what proved to be a stunning moment in time. Pete Townsend arguing with Jimi who would "go on first" as neither wanted to be outdone by the other... Who could EVER OUT DO JIMI ! Well Pete came close, when he destroyed his guitar & much of the equipment & Keith Moon kicking his drums into the crowd, well almost ! The Mr Voodoo Man, Jimi, topped that by setting alight his guitar in what must rank as one of the most jaw dropping display in Pop History. The other being the show that Janis put on, making the fullest of jaws, that of Mama Cass, literally DROP.... And it's all captured for posterity on the DVD. Also requiring mention was the stunning show which Ravi Shankar gave on sitar. He became the Jimi of Sitar ! In addition to this was the fact that Ravi's tuning up (15 minutes worth), was roundly applauded by those in the audience, who, unaccustomed to that instrument, thought he has started one of his "Ragas" !!!
"Prince Jones" wandered around with Nico of the Velvet Underground, both dazed.... The Byrds were fragmenting, David Crosby briefly joined Buffalo Springfield, much to the disdain of Roger McGuinn and "Owsley" gave just about everybody "a lift of another note".
I think I'll let Eric Burdon, further elaborate on his groundbreaking accolade to the Monterey Pop Fest..... Let us never forget.... This was the SUMMER of LOVE, in all its psychedelic multicoloured splendour.... And the Dawning of the Age of Aquarius.....
Peace, Love & all that went with it.....

not to glorify it, but.. . . you ought to mention that Owsley had outdone himself for the Pop festival, in creating "monterey purple" which without question was the high electric-field energy source thst fueled the incredible psychic-synergistic-mystic group flashes that just kept happening at/throughout that event...
jimi hendrix re-branded monterey purple as purple-haze. which if anything sort of further intensified the effects.
the nuance aspects of Owsley's products were incredible. orange was often agreed by all the heads as strong but very balanced feeling, red definitely mellow (even when an entire hit was ingested)... green as always was edgy and sometimes none too pleasent. purple was interesting, an interesting choice for fhe event... the consensus was ourple gave a far-out feeling sort of like being out in a space, that exists behind our everyday world, owsley purple sometimes had a slightly science fiction feel to it.
of course there was a practical reason for purple coloring.. it compromised the simple color/ID test kits then in use at police stations (of potential interest to any attendees unfortunate enough to have a cop interaction)
as these concerys became more about JUST music, hook-ups and of course "getting really f'd up" ... the mystical magical energy that had permeated the psychedelic scene from 1963 onward receded into the background.
and btw... the year 1967 really marked the end of the psychedeluc subculture.
yes, it has re-merged.. sort of.. but thst high voltage electrical feel acid opened up, is gone.
the news media sort of discovered this was all going on in 1967/68.
but in truth.. they were late taking noteice . . .. street acid (usually sandoz, diverted from a gov/university run psychiatric research center, began showing up occasionally in LA & SF in 1963.

Where in the hell, have we gone so, so, wrong in the past 50 years since. I could scream my head off and bawl my eyes out, just, thinking about it.
Can we ever, revive this scene again? Dear God, I SO, SO, Hope So.
