Brilliant! I removed the base octave string because my damaged finger would not keep both of them down without a buzz. I always capoed the first fret to standard tune (one reason the guitar is still playable and not warped badly after 50 years, the other is light strings). But I never heard of your Trick. Thank you.
Dear John, the sound in my previous comment's link may not be great, but you will hear the Gretch just pops. God bless Johannes van Graan Centurion, South Africa
Than's a nifty idea John, thank you for sharing. Apart from all the other benefits you mentioned, it does cut down the length of time it takes to change the strings.
I'm not sure about removing the G octave string, but the idea of deliberately adjusting the tuning of the paired strings sounds like genius to me! I'm leaving all the strings on, but will definitely try that tuning trick.
Dear John
I tuned my Gretsch 12 string E and B as per your advice. Its the best ever tuning advice I've ever had.
Brilliant!

Really clever sir!
Thank you! Cheers!
I love your insight and inventions.
So... The 12 string can be an equivalent of the honky tonk in the guitar world? 🤔
Ingenious little trick!
I wonder if this might cause any sort of issue over time due to a more uneven neck tention? 🤔
At my age, 'What happens over time,' is a moot point!

🤣👍 I hear ya!
I wouldn't think so. The tension from the additional light strings would be evened by the heavier bass string, maybe?
I see the 3 added bridge pins did you add 3 tuners at the headstock??
No I started with a 12 string so nothing needed adding.
Bought EKO 6 String John £175
Excellent, they last forever and can only be destroyed by naval gunfire!
What if you're a picker?
8 stringer
Can you play mozart?
But he never plays any of my tunes!
