Today we begin reading the book of the prophet Isaiah and the book of Tobit! Fr. Mike helps us understand the historical context of Isaiah's ministry to Judah, and the themes of condemnation and consolation present in his writings. As we enter into the book of Tobit, Fr. Mike emphasizes Tobit's virtuous character. Today we read Isaiah 1-2, Tobit 1-2, and Proverbs 9:7-12.
We hear every day from our community how The Bible in a Year helps to capture hearts and souls for Christ. While we’re happy to make it free to our audience, it’s not free to create! It takes a significant investment to produce the podcast and distribute it free-of-cost to the public. You can make a gift of financial support to help defray these costs and enable us to keep bringing evangelizing digital media to all those searching for God: tinyurl.com/yedzp985 Thank you for your support.

I have had someone from another Christian denomination quote a line from Isaiah to me to try to condemn the Catholic Church for using incense during worship, saying that it is 'an abomination' to the Lord. I knew that there was something wrong with the person's interpretation but I didn't know exactly what it was. But now Fr Mike has made it so clear. God did not appreciate their worship (which included their sacrifices, burnt offerings, and use of incense) because their hearts were far from Him. God had no problem with the worship itself, but with the worshippers! Thank you for making that so clear Fr. Mike. People need to be careful about taking one line of scripture and just running with it. They need to understand the context in which it was given.

I read the book of Tobit a few years ago. Really enjoyed it. As a convert I feel bad for the protestants missing out on really great books of the bible that aren't in the heretical KJV version.
Pray for the protestants and other heresy religions. I pray we all can become members of the church Jesus started.

Lord Jesus, I humbly pray for myself, Father Mike, & all the people participating in the Bible-in-Year podcast. May your word take deep root in our hearts & transform our ways of thinking, discerning, and acting. May your grace open our ears to hear & understand both the Old & the New Testaments that we may revere & treasure the words which God has prepared for all who desire to enter his kingdom. Send us your Holy Spirit to give us the Spirit of Knowledge, that we may know God and know ourselves. Give us the grace to approach the Word of God with meekness & humility, & with an eagerness to do everything God desires. Help us to be diligent students & faithful disciples of your Word. May our hearts never grow dull & may our ears never tire of listening to your voice. Amen.

Thank you, Fr. Mike. I'm looking forward to reading the Book of Tobit. As a Catholic I am not familiar with his writings. I'm already hooked after the first two chapters! I love your example of the prophet Isiah as a parent calling up the stairs to the two brothers who are arguing - telling them to "knock it off" and "you don't want me to come up there!" I have two sons (now both in their thirties) and we live in a two story house. This example is completely relatable!

  • @MrDarshD

    A fun and eventful episode!
*Love the book of Tobit that seems like a way of showing how we can do our best to follow God no matter who we are with and where we are! The story is quite interesting as Tobit buried the dead (respecting the dead bodies), never stole, did charity, put others first, and lived like a good father. His wife and son Tobias were also very diligent. It does have a similar message to that of Job. No matter how good we do, sometimes we face setbacks but we should not cease to do good.
*Great facts about the prophetic books, and the major prophet Isaiah and how his ministry primarily focused on Judah because the Northern Kingdom was destroyed in 724 BC. Sad to hear the legend that says how Isaiah's life was ended by Manassah.
    * Proverbs are awesome as always. Wisdom and insight being two of the most important things in life. Much more than riches.
Thank you so much, Fr. Mike and Team Ascension. God bless you and the fellow listeners

Oh my, Tobit is just like so many over the centuries. It isnt always 'clear' from outside that you are doing something that God called you to do, but Tobit knew himself and God, and just did those acts of charity ( kinda weird that bodies were left in the open in those times )...but Tobit knew to bury them & honour their lives! Very cool!

Interestingly, Rabbinic tradition holds that Isaiah was Hezekiah's father-in-law and Manasseh's grandfather. It shows how depraved Manansseh was before his conversion that he would saw in half not merely a prophet of God but his own grandfather, but I suppose the utter lack of natural affection is to be expected from a man who sacrificed his own son to idols.

    Round Two
Please pray for Souls in Purgatory. Go ahead, just take about 30 seconds to help save a soul that maybe is your family member or friend! Go forth and help save! Here is the prayer:
(According to tradition, St. Gertrude the Great was told by Our Lord that each time she piously recited the following prayer, it would release 1,000 souls (or a vast number) from their suffering in purgatory.)
    The Prayer of St. Gertrude
Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the masses said throughout the world today, for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family.
Amen.
God would reply to St. Gertrude that He would use whatever was offered to Him for the faithful departed, according to His inclination to show pardon & mercy.

I know!!!!! Exactly!!!!! Father just conveniently skips over this whole story. Of course he tries to summarize all the first two Chapters of Tobit in under 2 minutes. Maybe he shouldn't have read so much of Isaiah or maybe they ought to have edited out his gushing over Isaiah to give more time to interpret what was read in Tobit. He did a grave disservice to us listeners and he dates then ask for prayers? My prayer is they find a better Priest.
