Fr. Mike focuses on the book of Tobit today and explains why this beautiful book is missing from non-Catholic Bibles. He dives into the history behind the arrangement of the Bible, and why the Catholic Bible includes 73 books. Today's readings are Isaiah 3-4, Tobit 3-4, and Proverbs 9:13-18.

Fr. Mike, I've never read through the book of Tobit and I am incredibly moved by it. I was raised Methodist and converted to Catholicism. I was very emotional when you talked about the seven books that were removed and how non-Catholics were denied these wonderful and beautiful books. The prayers in the book of Tobit are amazing. I feel as if you have introduced me to a beautiful treasure. 🙏
Welcome home! Praying for you.
Day 193 ( Today is Thursday July 11th, 2024 ). Thank you Father Mike Schmitz and Ascension press. Deo gratias 🙏👼♥❤
7-11-24 Wow so fun to have the history of the books of the bible discussed. As a convert to Catholicism, I was knocked over by the number of things I had never encountered that were a part of my Christian heritage for more than a thousand years. There was so much wisdom and insight that I never knew -- these books, or the early church fathers like Saint Augustine. Really great information. Thanks :)
July 11, 2024 Thursday. Here I am.
11JUL2024. Day 193. Lord, help us to walk in your spirit. Amen
Day 193..Between Isaiah and Tobit..we'll get an earful.. prayers for Father Mike and all the BIY family 🙏❤
One of the many reasons my husband and I converted is that we realized we'd been shortchanged, not even knowing there were other books of the Bible until we were almost 40! Thank you Fr. Mike!
4/4/2024 is my Day 193 of The Bible in A Year journey. What a gift!
One day behind you my brother 🙏
I’m 4/6/2024!
Father Mike explained very well about the 7 additional books in our Bible. I am happy to have the ammunition now that it was Martin Luther who REMOVED these books from the Bible, and not Catholics who ADDED them. Thank you Fr. Mike. May God continue to pour blessings upon you to fill your needs. You are so instrumental in making this journey of reading the Bible in a year a beautiful experience for me. I am in love with the Word. Admittedly, I am so in love with it that I run ahead on the schedule. 💌
I was under the impression that it was the Puritan printers who declined to include the Deuterocanonical books in the 2nd ed of the KJV.
The first ed KJV of 1611 included them
Very good explanation and background explaining why Catholic Bibles have an additional 7 books. The arguments I have heard from non Catholic Christians is that the Church "added" those books when in reality they were removed by Martin Luther.
They were removed by Martin Luther. because many of these books talk about things he did not agree with/want to accept.
Luther used the Jewish Masoretic texts, which were a rewritten version from the Middle Ages that Jewish scholars made to try to disprove Jesus.
This was so good. I am protestant, but have had my doubts about protesting for a while. It seems to me that Martin Luther may have thrown out the baby with the bathwater.
There were some serious concerns at the time, but how sad that reform led to a riven body of Christ.
04 Dec 2022 praying for all those who came before & all those who will come after. God bless you🙏❤️
AMEN 🙏.
To all those whose bibles do not include The Book of Tobit: as with ALL The Holy Scriptures, be blessed and nourished by this God's Word through this book and judge FOR YOURSELF if this is "apocryphal" or not.
Ibeen missing out. My life could have been fixed by these extra 7 books. God knows. I always felt comnected to my grandmother i never met who was catholic.
Excuse errors. Typing in garden. Can't see it well.
The Lord doesn't leave you hanging.
Stay in scripture and continue praying.
Come to mass sometime 😊
Prayers for everyone on this Bible In A Year Day 193🙏
What an amazing lesson, and now the clarity I received. I'm blessed and thanks to Fr. Mike.
From what I understand Luther supposedly rejected those books because he believed they were things the Church added in later and weren’t legitimate scripture. This was due to the fact that the original Hebrew copies of those books were lost for a long time when the temple got destroyed and so only the Greek copies remained. It wasn’t till long after Luther died that archaeological digs discovered the original Hebrew texts thus proving they were legitimate and not simply converted pagan texts.
Lord Jesus, I humbly pray for myself, Father Mike, & all the people participating in the Bible-in-Year podcast. May your word take deep root in our hearts & transform our ways of thinking, discerning, and acting. May your grace open our ears to hear & understand both the Old & the New Testaments that we may revere & treasure the words which God has prepared for all who desire to enter his kingdom. Send us your Holy Spirit to give us the Spirit of Knowledge, that we may know God and know ourselves. Give us the grace to approach the Word of God with meekness & humility, & with an eagerness to do everything God desires. Help us to be diligent students & faithful disciples of your Word. May our hearts never grow dull & may our ears never tire of listening to your voice. Amen.
Thank you so much for discussing the seventh of the Bible that are in some Bibles but not others. It’s a wonderful history lesson.
I pray for the unification of all Christians one day. I know it will happen even if it’s not anytime soon perhaps the next 50 to 100 years and beyond, it may be come a reality.
It would be fascinating to know how many non-Christians are listening to this podcast this year. I’m learning about the Bible and a whole new light. I happen to be Hindu and I’m considering the Catholic Church.
Amen. Are you Christian now
@@leekshikapinnamneni4835 How wonderful! We pray for you.
@@leekshikapinnamneni4835 I will pray for you too.
I learnt alot about life from reading Sirach, the book of wisdom. My go-to for advice. Heavenly Father thank you for sacred scripture that can form our lives to become better people. Please bless Fr Mike and all of us journeying and those who have journeyed through biy. I also pray for peace in Israel and Jerusalem 🙏🏻❤
An important reminder to read all 73 books of the Bible!
*Grateful to Fr. Mike for refreshing our memory with historical facts such as The Book of Tobit and the books in the Catholic and Orthodox Bible were studied and translated first then the 7 books were removed in 1500s removed by Martin Luther due to his disapproval of Maccabees, the prayer for the dead and the Purgatory. In 325, the Church cleared doubts by declaring Jesus as complete man and complete God. In 350, the books were decided.
* The wisdom given in the Book of Tobit is amazing indeed, and it's unfortunate that those who are not Catholics or Orthodox miss out on it. They need to read these at least out of curiosity and also because these are the books accepted from and by the Apostles as Fr. Mike described how they are called the Septugual books (70 translators translating them).
* Jesus did mention that the old temples even one brick won't remain. It will be rebuilt. Thus referring to the Church /ministry established by Jesus. Similar to how the Temple was broken before Solomon and Solomon rebuilt it but Jesus rebuilt it through the Holy Spirit and New messages of God's path to salvation.
Thank you for your facts and analysis, Fr. Mike! God bless you and the fellow listeners
Praying for Fr. Mike & BIY 🙏🙏🙏 Happy Fourth of July to all.🎇
Father Mike, you are, as you already know, so right about the seven missing books. I grew up without these books and was not exposed to them until I became Anglican, in my sixties. I was missing out on so much. I love liturgical services, they are so responsive to God, and I love we that we use the Catholic bible.
They neen hiding Gods words from me. Now i want to buy your Ascension bible.👍💯
Maybe they didn't know. The Ascension bible is an excellent choice. ❤🙏
Thank you for explaining that Father Mike. I had always wondered why the Catholic Bible had those extra chapters. I grew up Baptist so had never been exposed to them.
It's so good to hear not only the history of the old and new testament, but also the early church.
I'm a prostant so I haven't heard these books before, so I hope their good.
They are very good
Lord, You are our ultimate gift. May we live every minute of every day with purpose to glorify you. Help us to be faithful in all circumstances when we don’t see the end in sight. May we extend works of mercy to those who need it most with joyful hearts. 🙏🏻
This is very true! Fr. Mike thank you for explaining it very well! My Aunt converted to Protestant when she was at a middle age and convert again to Catholic at 80 years old and died. She gave me her bible and found out, she had a catholic bible with the 7 books. She might not have known there's a difference on a non-catholic bible. But I am so grateful to know this difference today! So blessed to be in this BIAY community! Praying for all of us, God is so great in everything!
Thank you Maryanna I am praying for you and all also. ❤🙏🙏🙏
Can't wait to meet all my new siblings.
Soooo good,Fr. Mike🙏❤️
May the saints in heaven pray for us
Praying for everyone journeying BIY 🙏
Thank you Fr Mike for explaining the reason behind 73 books in Catholic Bible and 66 books in non catholic Bible
I love happy ending.
I love the Book of Tobit. I read it over and over. So often, we have Angel walking next to us but we do not recognise them. Open our eyes Lord
Amen to that 🙏 ❤
DaY 193 Praise GOD❤❤❤

Tobit is great! We are introduced to a fourth angel by name, Raphael. As a Protestant they used to ask, "How many angels are named in the Bible?" Their answer was 3: Gabriel, Michael and Lucifer but now we know there are truly 4.

Prayers for your father and all those facing death without returning to the sacraments. Whenever I leave my brother in the nursing home I tell him I'm praying for him.
God bless you Fr. Mike!
Thank you, Fr. Mike, for doing such a great job with all the BIA; but especially for explaining why we have the seven books. May God continue to bless you in your ministry.
I'm a practicing Catholic I'm being Catholic 45 years . I came back to the church I've been back for 14 months and I'm still learning since I've been back I had learned that the Holy Communion Jesus Christ blood and body it's not a symbol. Cuz Jesus Christ said unless you could take him out Eat My Flesh and drink my blood you have no life and him and his disciples left not to travel disciples is disciples that followed him they left him cuz I felt it was a hard saying if they would have stayed and listened to Jesus Christ he would explain to them it's the Holy Communion if you don't partake of it you have no life in you cuz that is Jesus Christ flesh and blood. One of the things I enjoy about going to mass not just hearing the preaching by the priests but also for taking the Eucharist at Sacramento. I'm in the state of grace I have no mortal sins I only have venial sins.
Please try to get rid of the venial sins. Sin is not something to be proud of.
Praying for everyone. Thank you Fr. Mike.
God Bless, Year 3 for me.
Day 193: July 5, 2022. ✅
The book of Tobit is so reminiscent of the book of Job to me. But more accessible I think. I’m really enjoying it.
It gives me more clues regarding how to approach God in prayer in times of trouble and desperation always praising HIM first even when I don’t understand His Will. Tobit and Sara are great examples.
Thanks be to GOD ALMIGHTY ❤❤❤prayers Father Mike Amen 🙏
Thank you for getting me to mass , I am greatful

Round Two
A great addition to Father Mike’s Bible in a Year and Catechism in a Year is Saint Faustina’s Diary. I urge you to listen to or read her Diary to help guide you in this life. Jesus I trust in You. #DivineMercy
Again. God bless you Father Mike. I learn so much from your BIAY. Amen 🙏
[ @14:44 ] I so LOVE Fr. Mike's explanation of how seven vital books of the Bible, which ALL Christians had embraced as part of the Bible for 1500 years, were suddenly pulled from the Bible by Martin Luther, because he just decided on his own that they would no longer do, as he didn't believe in Purgatory! And so was born the Protestant version of the Bible, missing 7 amazing books which had been accepted by all for 15 centuries! WTH, Martin Luther?! These books are amazing... I am particularly blown away by Wisdom!
Thank you, Fr. Mike, & God bless! 😇
[7.13.2023]
“For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures for ever, and his faithfulness to all generations.”
Psalms 100:5
I didn’t even know that there were 7 books. I’m excited to be exposed to them and to learn
July 11, 2024. Day 193
Welcome to the books new to you. What a blessing
Thank you SO much, Father Mike. I’ve been a Catholic all of my life, and never questioned the books in the Catholic Bible until I moved to the south. Your very clear history of the Bible is very helpful. God bless you, Fr. Mike!
Thanks!
WOW, Tobit : 4:11 , 16-21 ~ This will be my Facebook post today. Excellent . God inspired Love it
Thanks for the idea Susan, I’ll post it to Twitter! 🐦
Interesting….I never knew this…for me it is important to keep my heart open and listen to how God speaks to me in all things….as long as I don’t make it a debate and argue right over wrong (include not include) I am good to go….I look forward to the wisdom of these books and what God has to say! Thanks Father Mike.
Thank You Father Mike for sharing the Bible with all of us. It is a true blessing to be able tot understand the word of our Lord. It helps us to grow closer to our God. Praying for Father Mike and anyone else who is in need of prayers
I am so grateful for all that you do, but especially grateful for your explanation of these seven books today. One of my closest and dearest friends has read the Bible at least twice and is doing again - but he is not a Catholic. Knowing his love for God and desire to learn, I just know he is really going to appreciate your explanation and the opportunity to experience them!🙏🙏🙏
Thank you Father Mike🙏
Thank you for all the context today Fr Mike!
Thank u Father Mike 💫
A life built on God's word is a life that will stand through every season.🌠
Thank you for the explanation Fr. Mike. I really love the book of Tobit! God bess us all. 😇
Thank you Father. I'm on my first journey through the entire Bible. But Father I eas expecting this book to be put in context as promised. In other words, these prophecies were issued in the reign of XY,,when the practicesof A and B were rife..Im still hoping its ahead.
I was under the impression that it was the Puritan printers who declined to include the Deuterocanonical books in the 2nd ed of the KJV.
The first ed KJV included them
Thank You Fr Mike Amen JMJ
God bless those who started BIY in 2022 and are sticking with it. Past the halfway point, chugging away
Tobit is one of my favorite books in the Bible. Thanks for the explanation about why we have 73 books in our bible. Praying for all. God Bless. Claire.
Thank you Fr. Mike for explaining the Deuterocanonical books. God bless.
Lord God, let us always walk in your ways, help keep us on the straight path when we stray. Fr, Mike thank you again for another day of praying and explaining God's words to us. God Bless you. Prayers always,
God bless you father mike for sharing this information Amen 🙏
Thanks be to God. Thank you Rev Fr. Thanks for the scripture reading for today and thanks for the explanation.
Thank you Father Mike for the Book of Tobit. Very interesting. Thank you also for the explanation on the books and differences of religions. I love the emotion in your readings.
WOW, Thank you and God Bless you Father Mike, Praying for you and all of your followers on this Journey....
Great explanation!!!! Thanks... this study has been a deep learning experience for me.
Father Mike, with great respect to your teaching, which is new to me about Luther having the Apocrypha removed from OT books, I wish to write of what I know of Luther’s schism from the Church of Rome. The scholar should continue to read the (99?) Theses Luther posted on the door of his (Wittenberg ??) church. I’m Evangelical Lutheran with certain studies and concurrence with many to possibly all Catholic teaching, particularly under Pope Francis. Luther was in heated discussion with the Pope over the requirement that one had to pay money to the Church as part of confession and penance. This prevented the poor from confession and forgiveness of sins. There is much more to both sides, as is usually true in any religious doctrinal discussion. But I thought this generally accepted opinion on the schism was appropriate to note. My pastor told me he was taught that Luther stated the Apocrypha was useful for study and teaching. Among several translations, I have a Bible that includes all the books; a Catholic Bible, though I have not studied all the books. Wisdom is so beautiful and moving to me. I’m tremendously grateful for this study. Tobit is a happy discovery for me. Thank you.
The issue you referred to with having to "pay for confession" is a complicated one, but in short the Church never taught you had to pay money to have your sins forgiven.
What happened was their was a miscommunication among a bishop to his diocese. A bishop thought the Church needing more funding, so he asked his diocese to encourage almsgiving during confession. You see, in the Sacrament of Confession, after you confess your sins and the Christ speaks through the priest, "I am absolve you of your sins, in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit." You are forgiven! After that the priest gives a penance which is an little exercise to help prevent you from sinning, however doing this is not necessary to have your sins forgiven, but if you willingly and knowingly do not do a reasonable penance, then that is another sin. Priests can offer three things for penance, any form of fasting, prayer, or almsgiving.
So you can see that when this bishop miscommunicated to his diocese, some priests only offered confessions with almsgiving to the Church penances and people who have been poorly catechized think the penance is required for the forgiveness of the sin, and ergo they think giving money to the Church is required for the forgivness of their sins.
I hope this helps you understand! God bless!
@@noahperri9167 beautiful explanation!! Good bless
Praying for you Father
Fr. Schmitz - yes, much confusion! I am using the new American Bible revised edition Bible. I’ve purchased this several years ago. It is used in my parish and is the only one available at the time in large print (old eyes 😊). This Bible has two sections that between them contain the seven books you are referring to and those sections are called biblical Novelas, which includes Tobit, judith, Esther, and one and two Maccabees. The second section is called the wisdom books, which includes Job, Psalms, Proverbs Ecclesiastes, song of songs, wisdom, and Sirach. I was certain this was a Catholic Bible as it has a forward from the Vatican and includes thankfully, 73 books 😊
Thank you, Fr. Mike, for explaining the 7 books that’s not included in the Catholic Bible. I can’t wait to read them. God bless you, Fr. Mike! 🙏
You may have a typo… they’re not included in the Protestant Bible. They are included in the Catholic Bible. I’m glad he explained it!
@@magnoliam4159 Thanks! That sure was a typo. It’s the 7 books that’s included in the Catholic Bible( not the Protestant one) 👍🙏
Blessings
When I began the conversion process and realized that there were actually 7 more books in the Bible, I was kind of mad at Martin Luther. Who was he to arbitrarily decide to remove scripture? I also read he wanted to remove four books from the NT but was dissuaded by a friend.
I am a Lutheran, but I will also say Luther was a flawed man and not right about everything. SO I am open to hearing these books.
@@run4cmt I am so glad that you are open to discussion, I wish some Catholics would be like that and not condemn non-Catholics as non-Christian.
I grew up Catholic. Being taught how Luther was wrong and did wrong. Well.... Now I've learned how the Catholic church been messing with everyone. Statues that are false gods relabeled. Goddess ISIS relabeled to Mary ect ect. Mystical pagan traditions creep into the church. I'm about to read a book. Women who rides the beast. End days of the Catholic church.
@@carolyncampbell6149 I have been a Catholic my entire life (as all my family and friends are too). I have lived in Latin America, USA, and other countries. Wherever I have been, I have always joined the Catholic communities of each place where I've dwelled. I have never heard from any Catholic that non-Catholics (Protestants) are not Christian. 😊
I just want to clarify, because Father says it was in 350 AD several times, that the Council of Rome was actually in 382 AD, in case you are intending to memorize the year.
Thank you Fr for the enlightenment, sometimes we never know the reason why some priests reject blessing some bibles. We even didn't know the true bibles when purchasing them, some are even given out free of charge. Once again thanx. May God continue to enlighten and bless you.
I am excited for tomorrows reading.
Thanks For. Mike for a truly illuminating explanation on the extra 7 books of the Bible. Such a blessing to know that these books were read/recited from beginning of Old Testament. Jesus did pray that we all may be one. Let's hope + pray this comes about. Thanks Fr. Mike for great explanation again. 🙏
🙏❤️
I have read Tobit, Judith, Esther, and Maccabees 1, and 2 Am I glad we have those 7 book. You can go on line and order books that tell just what Father Mike said. Thank you Father Mike now I need to read the rest too
How cool that this is the first reading today.
🙏🏻
Thanks for explaining explicitly
the history of the Bible. God bless you as always Fr. Mike.
Thank you Father for the explanation of the books. I'm Catholic so I knew that Luther removed them but I didn't understand the Septuagint. I knew it was a Greek translation but not that it was the original translation from Hebrew. Now I know why they place so much importance on that rendering. I have to agree the deuterocanonical books are awesome and so inspiring.
I've also learned what Luther was actually talking about. I grew up Catholic being taught how Luther did wrong. Well the Catholic church has been doing wrong. Changing the 10 commandments. Relabeling pagan gods as Mary and the saints. Mixing pagan traditions into gods teachings.
thank you Fr. Mike
