  • Welcome! These clips are from a large video collection that is now being converted from VHS/Beta to digital many from the 70's, 80's and 90's. If I know the original air date/year I will post it.
    There is some viewing quality loss from the original video source due to the age of the tapes, but the performances are preserved and still a joy to view. I'm finding many lost performances from vintage R&B, Soul, Pop, Broadway, Cabaret and other performances. This channel will be the Ed Sullivan channel for the digital generation, something for everyone to enjoy. Many of the performances will be seen for the first time since they were originally televised. I will be adding many musical performances from a variety of sources that I hope you will enjoy. Please hit the like button.

    Patti and Sarah sing in a similar soprano register. Nona is a lower alto. They're not trying to out-sing each other. Each soloist is expressing herself in her own distinctive voice -- a quality that separates Labelle from other vocal groups.

      I saw Labelle do Nightbirds in concert and you are correct. Those three women could sing! Very strong singers each on their own. Sarah Dash just passed. They each held their own with Patti. One of the best live concerts I have ever seen. Sarah RIP

    Nona's songs always sound like she made them up as she sang them. Like a little girl playing in front of the mirror in her bedroom. Patti brings this song to life. Labelle's power and harmony is like no other.

    • @stevelangely8004
      @stevelangely8004 Před 2 lety +3

      Interesting analysis, especially since Nona wrote poetry as a teen and thought she would teach English.

    • @Odawg96
      @Odawg96 Před rokem +1

      I don’t know about all that. It sounds like the words of an English major. It’s not simple and very personal for her. It’s not flowery either. The narrator is dealing with some mental health issues, maybe going through some sort of identity crisis, people telling her what is and is not acceptable and that something is “wrong” with her. Knowing what we know about Nona, this is probably a VERY autobiographical piece. And as someone said, she WAS the primary songwriter.

    • @Ready2ReadU
      @Ready2ReadU Před rokem

      @stevelangely8004 Writing poetry does not make you a great songwriter any more than being a great song writer makes you a great poet. By the way being a poet and being a good poet are also two different things.

    • @Odawg96
      @Odawg96 Před rokem +1

      @@Ready2ReadU And all of that is subjective, of course. I’ve never gone down the Labelle rabbit hole, but it’s clear that Nona has a lot of ideas about what she saw/reflected on. Perhaps her style may be why Labelle had more of an underground cult following for the first part of their career rather than major “pop” success. For those of us who aren’t members of the “pop” audience, that’s okay. Fortunately, their on-stage abilities were second to none, and they did eventually get the accolades they deserved.
