  • Everything You Need To Know About Escaflowne
This synopsis covers escaflowne the movie (2000) which is a retelling of the entire escaflowne (1996) anime. There are a couple differences between the movie and the anime but generally the same plot.
Shoji Kawamori, famed for creating the 1982 space epic Macross, created Escaflowne. Kawamori was Escaflowne's principal writer and narrative supervisor, but not its director. Initially, Escaflowne was conceived as a male-oriented manga by Yasuhiro Imagawa. The initial Escaflowne manga, serialized in Shonen Ace well before the TV series, features Hitomi as a morphing magic girl. "Escaflowne" is the tale of a little Japanese girl who has swept away to a mythical world where the Earth and Moon are held together by magic.

Same age! I watched it with my older sister when we would stay up late to watch anime as kids. Because of staying up late to watch these frankly pretty mature shows for my age, it really felt immersive like I was being whisked away into these fantasy worlds. Escaflowne the Movie left a HUGE mark on my mind. The composer Yoko Kanno is also now one of my favorites...the music she makes for anime is just second to none. Wolfs Rain, Cowboy Bebop, Macross, this movie and more...she's just got such good ears for music.

Yeah you summarized the crappy Escaflowne film from 2000, not the anime "Vision of Escaflowne". They're two VERY different things... For example the Black Dragons and Abaharaki aren't even a thing in the anime, and Folken is a much more complex character than the brooding, megalomaniacal, nihilistic, one-dimensional archetype presented in the movie. Summed up the film just fine, but the title of your video is a bit misleading.

I know. I always just viewed them as “alternate universes” of each other. Similar to how most of the DBZ movies didn’t really fit in to the main DBZ timeline.
I enjoyed both but was always blown away by how the tv show easily mixed in shoujo and shonen themes together to create something interesting. I always found it fascinating how useful a character Hitomi was. In a world of swordsmen and giant robots she always was able to play a pivotal role in events in the story. The main characters were all able to shine without stealing the spotlight from each other for the most part. And the world building was pretty dope without being too overwhelming.

Yes, it's the movie Escaflowne, not the series. Explanation was a bit confusing, but thanks for posting this anyway. The movie was ok, but the series was one of the best anime ever in my opinion. It had some of the best music from one of the best anime composer ever (Yoko Kanno), and I'm glad they used it in the movie as well. The only thing I gripe about is that the series got canceled. Not because it didn't do well, but there were other big name anime, like Evangelion, that came out at the same time that affected the rating. Anyways, now I gotta watch the whole series again 😅

Escaflowne to me is The Ancestor of Isekai. It's a Real O.G Anime like Ruroni Kenshin and Evangelion that began the isekai genre and made it to what it is today. Back then in the 1990s and early 2000s, nobody including me ever thought of Isekai nor what it meant until Konosuba in 2016 showed itself. I remember Escaflowne when I was in Elementary School growing up and watching it on Fox Kids and Adult Swim. Its not my favorite show from Nihongo but its enjoyable. But after Konosuba, more and more Isekai Anime presented themselves until now it seems like The Isekai Genre is trying to dominate The Anime Industry. Joey Bizinger The Anime Man hates stuff as this but Gigguk doesn't mind too much. I though personally don't mind either as long as it balances itself from other shows in the season.
