- This is the montage sequence from Mamoru Oshii's 1995 film, "Ghost in the Shell". I decided to upload it because I haven't seen it on CZcams yet, much less in 1080p.
This montage is my favorite part of any movie I have ever seen up to this point in my life, and I feel like that's saying a lot for me. It is very powerful and awe-inspiring.
Fun fact: The file I had for the film was in .mkv, and I couldn't edit that easily, so I actually recorded this clip with Fraps in VLC player, and edited the 3 .avi files it produced. Notice the quality did not suffer. :) - Krátké a kreslené filmy
old school japanese background painters were true artists. I have never see something better in western animation.

This is actually a real place called Hong Kong and the city really looks like this in 1960s.
Old school were great maybe you should check out the "Spider-Man Into the Spiderverse"
Nothing in modern anime too. Characters without noses and big eyes looking like a Disney characters. 80s 90s is when Anime peaked.
American Cartoons in 1930s are very good. Also, Soviet era animations are true high class Art.
When you need no dialogues, or even real actors to express complex ideas and deep feelings, then you realize how genius was Oshii back in 1995 and what a master pieces is Ghost in the shell.
Not exactly. These scene hits the hardest when it has character context. Don't mistake slowing down the pacing for an alternative to traditional narritive

All the people here struggle too much to admit this is true art and it’s perfect the way it is. Stop living in the duality that you always need to highlight the mistakes or put it less amazing. Admit it, this is fucking timeless and spiritual. A true work of art that intends to transform the mind
It does well with what it is. It heavily relies on premise and plot, but is a bit cold with characters. I wish the stakes were hire with the ghost hacked humans who lose their identities and memory. It would really punch up the theme consciousness if you could see more of who these people were to create that sense of loss

The shot where Kusanagi sees herself in the restaurant is Phillip K Dick, Blade Runner, level brilliant.
But what does it mean? I feel stupid, but I wanna understand what they mean by that shot.
@@writershard5065 Kusanagi uses a standard chassis (i.e. her body is standard looking because as a special agent she is not supposed to stand out). In this scene she notices another person using the same chassis. In the whole montage you can see other elements that play into the theme of the body being just another commodity. Theres a sign at 2:52 promising "lifelike performance", propably advertising human dolls, in 1:52 you see fashion dummies in a shop display . At 3:20 you see fashion dummies without clothes and the difference is clear. With clothes they look likelike, without clothes they all look the same and definitely not lifelike. This is a clear parallel to Kusanagi and her chassis - the body is generic, you have to add something to distinguish it from all the other same looking chassis.
@@TheMovingEye She is in a multiple million dollar body. Supposedly unique but average looking. That is why she is so startled. I took it to mean the puppet master is messing with her.
@@rutabagasteu That's what he means by the chassis being the same. You can change all you want under the hood of a car but if you don't change the body panels it's still going to look just like every other car of the same make and model.
That being said, I always took it as meaning that the Major's body is entirely off-the-shelf standard and that the only thing unique about her is her mind. Thus playing into the idea of a future where people are defined by what's in their brains, not by how they are "built".

These scenes show us an overcrowded city, full of inhabitants but is a sick place, the main feeling we can perceive is the loneliness, also accompanied by one of most wonderful soundtrack ever written for a movie. In my opinion the moment when loneliness is strong is the scene with the dog on the bridge, the dog is the only living being looking at us but at the same time the camera is moving away from it, giving us a strong sense of solitude and abandonment.
Yes. I lived in a citylike environment for close to six years. It was a relief to come home in the evening away from all the dirt. But in a strange way, that environment too touched me. I come back to this montage to relive that part

The dog was the only one capable to open his mind to new stimulus. It welcomed you without any thought. Pure loving souls.
Nah, it is clearly about identity. What is our identity when it is formed by some system and do we want to continue in the molding process.
I on the other hand sees the city as a constructed organism (although the plane passing over made me think of reefs), the people and movements as cells or streams, the waterways as arteries.
I don't get the feeling of loneliness when seeing this scene, what I was thinking of were parallells.
That feel when the golden era of anime is over.
Nonsense, the real golden era is the modern trend of anime's based in high schools featuring an awkward male main protagonist and his struggle to thrive in a school full of large breasted female peers.

3 minutes and 30 seconds without a single word spoken by any character and it still communicates more than a million TV shows and animes say in their entire run time. This is real art. Human souls communicating through moving pictures and sound, not language.

The thing that still strikes me the most, the level of detail is just insane.
I remember watching Ghost In A Shell for the first time. I was already thoroughly enjoying it when this sequence came along and blew me away.
I was 14 20 years ago when i saw this and it blew me away just like Akira.

The atmosphere feels like I’m there, experiencing the same questions and ideas that kusunagi is asking. The art alone feels so realistic that I can imagine myself walking those streets, seeing what others see. Truly a one of a kind scene.

Johnlindsey289 I get what you say, but they are nowhere near as complicated as GitS, at least from a philosophycal and social standpoint, not even Miyazaki's ones - which has a completely different approaches to stories than Oshii, which is why Oshii doesn't like Miyazaki
not even GitS 2, but you can see how someother things Oshii made (like Patlabor 2 or Jin-Roh) are much more "deep"
also this scene is a perfect example of how they are actually narrating something of the psychology of Motoko without even a fuckin' word, which is storytelling at his finest
I think this is when the 90s starts to fade- going to the post 9-11 of 2000s the beautiful imagination and vision of a positive and forward look of the future starts to decompose. As being shown in the story telling and art in this anime. Its surprisingly haunting all the time
The part of the song at 1:34 always strikes such a deeply resonant spiritual chord within me... Always brings tears to my eyes, without fail. There's such a loneliness to it that I think everyone can relate to at an intrinsic level. We are all ultimately alone.
Reminds me of scarface
It borrows the theme from "Floating Museum," the song that plays during Major Kusanagi's fight with the spider tank near the end of the movie. It's truly a reflective piece that hints to the self-reflective nature of transcendence and evolution that follows the spider-tank encounter.

Anime like this is a lost art.
The fact that Kusanagi’s shell is something mass produced imparts this mysterious vibe that absolutely haunts. Her very essence resounds in important ways, but her outward appearance proliferates almost belying the depths of her and their ghosts.

I'm not sure about that. From the little snippets I have seen so far, they seem to be pretty on point in regards to the type casting. Interiors seem to have been done very well also. The outside, we will have to wait. Overall we might be pleasantly surprised yet.

well, skepticism towards live-action adaptations of mango and animu is based upon the massive representation of the failed latter. (with some great exceptions, such as Edge of Tomorrow - adaptation of the "All you need is kill" manga)
I agree though, that new GITS movie seems steady in the spirit of the original, now it's all up to the execution. I'm afraid there will be a lack of thick political fiction layer in the plot, or could be reduced to mere premise. I liked how the original acheived fragile balance between political fiction, technical and existential aspects, dillemas and emerging philosophies from the near future (which I think is the definition of the true cyberpunk genre). Live action seems to be more on the philosopical, existential side, but we'll see.
Also, the atmosphere to which Retromind refers is one-of-its-kind Mamoru Oshii's vision of the GITS. Anime universe also comprises of 2 seasons of SAC series, few films and Arise OVA prequels, which are ringing the different notes, and deepening the lore significantly as compared to the 1995 film. And I think this is important beacuse to me, the GITS world is as important as the characters populating it.
I hope the film will be a success and will get a chance to get a continuation and unfold in a longer, but suitable format of for example 10 1-hour episodes, and that the GITS will finally get the wide recognition and critical acclaim it deserves.
I watched last night and i can say what was 70-80% percent, way better than i expected!!
im obssessed with GITS and I think the movie was way above my expectations. =) pretty convincing at the very least.
For me, Ghost in the Shell 95 is the greatest piece of anime to ever be created. There are others in the same realm in terms of art style but this is the one for me. The art, the score, the story, and the complex questions and views of what consciousness even means just edge this one to the top for me. Truly a masterpiece of art. Shame almost 30 years later and we cant even come close to recreating something like this.
There is heavy symbolism with reflections in this scene, be it the water or the glass. Takes you back to the scene just before this where she says "its like looking at yourself in the mirror". This scene explores her feelings of identify and her place in this world
The details and the attention given to the background is otherworldly, ethereal..
What an incredible experience
the philosophical implication of AI becoming sentient is what makes Ghost in the Shell an amazing story PLUS Being animated in the 90s when Anime was still awesome. I love this scene but my favorite piece of music in life is on this soundtrack. Nightstalker.
this scene alone shows that GitS is one of the best looking anime works of all time. it's a true work of art, sad that 20 years later anime can't even touch it in terms of visuals.
I'm kinda late, but a scene from made in abyss actually has a good sequence. The sunrise scene is breathtaking.
The first time I saw this, I could not get over the the rain effects starting at 1:58.

Despite being set in Japan, that is undeniably Hong Kong (Oshii even admitted that Hong Kong was the main basis for the aesthetics of Niihama). The real life city that also most perfectly embodies the film's themes.

@@horrorkek9340the visuals were from Hong Kong. There's even some Cantonese in one of the parts. The grimey Cantonese aesthetic matched the blade runner look more than Japan did.

Mamoru Oshii's entire work is a visual gem, he gave us the best anime films, my favorite will always be Beutiful Dreamer (Urusey Yatzura)

I was lucky to see this movie on release in the cinema. It was epic.
Absolutely stunning composition. I come back to this sequence in times of confusion, sadness, perplexation. I can't help but see the similarities in the landscape of New Port City and Vancouver. A class system split so deeply that it almost feels other worldly at times. With massive structures there to make you feel like you're part of something so much bigger, but also so insignificant. If anyone is going through a tough time, just know that it will pass. eventually all does.

0:57 she sees someone who looks like her with kind of hammers home the idea that she is questioning her identity, this moment is pretty powerful. whats funny is it wouldn't work with a lot of lower quality anime because all the women look the same . sometimes they have different hair colors and styles but a lot of times thats it. generic character design is a issue a lot of anime suffers from that ghost in the shell doesn't have

Thank you for uploading this. I watched this gem of an anime back in 2004, but I didn't appreciate the slow atmospheric sequences like this. I was too hyped up on action sequences since I was 20 years old at the time. This one scene still stuck with me over the years, especially the parts where it's raining. Since I was in the Navy, and deployed out into the Asian and Persian Gulf theaters, I was able to visit Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore first hand. Sasebo, Japan wasn't like this, but some older apartment buildings in Hong Kong did match New Port City's aesthetic and architecture, while Singapore had this building that was like a technology mall, selling between cheap and somewhat high-end products at the time. I also can remember just how hot and humid places like that can be. Seeing this scene again helps me remember the sights, the feels, and even the smells of those far-off places.

Not a fan of "back in the old days everything was better.." but i sometimes forget, that anime back then really used to be art. When i watch modern anime, i almost die from cringing away every 2 minutes. At least the mainstream stuff.
This is the best sequence in the entire film. Every single frame of this feels like a real place, lived-in. I've watched it more frequently than I've seen the full film. It's incredible.
