Hey Eric, I asked this in your Dr. Strange video, but I thought I'd ask it here since it's seemed more relevant this time around. But have you seen MauLer's video on ZSJL? If so what are your thoughts on it? I'm just asking because he had some critical things to say about the movie to say the least as well as some points of criticism towards why people are praising it and you being someone who really enjoyed it, I'm curious to hear your thoughts on that video. This isn't me trying to sh*t on you at all, I typically really enjoy your stuff and am a subscriber of yours, but I was just curious about thoughts on it if you had any. Also do you think you'll do a vs video between ZSJL and BVS? That'd be a suggestion I'd give to you for future videos.

Essentially, ZSJL feels like a movie that was ripped straight out of a comic book in terms of its color, tone, and dynamic action scenes. Then again, Zack's color palette style has always added a sort of dreamlike state that I feel works well for CBMs, especially 300, Watchmen, and ZSJL.
Now, I will argue that there are character moments for most of the characters, such as Black Widow silently admitting to Hawkeye that Loki's words got to her, Tony and Bruce's dialogue, and Fury's scenes with them. However, as a writer, Joss is better working with characters than working with action, and he's a TV director more than a movie one. He did have some creative fight sequences, but there was no way he'd beat Zack in terms of spectacle, dynamic combat, and sheer heaviness.

Honestly, the difference between both movies is exactly why I love both. DC has always had the reputation of being larger than life while Marvel has always seemed to be more subtle, and closer to the dull everyday struggle for the heroes. I like that Marvel heroes feel more petty in comparison to the DC heroes. It makes sense the that the conflict in Avengers feels less intense than the one in ZSJL. If both were the exact same, than there is no creativity involved. It works and I'm happy we get to be spoiled by both of them

Despite my love for the first avengers film, Zack Snyder’s justice league will always be one of my favorites. The experience I had and the expertise of how well made this film is simply amazing. From the breathtaking visuals, stunning cinematography, top-notch special effects, incredible directing and phenomenal acting to the drama, serious tone, intelligent story and deeply compelling characterizations of all the main characters. Also delivering one of the best soundtracks I’ve ever heard and some badass action sequences. There’s also countless details which includes parallels, Easter eggs, references, symbology and imagery which I find absolutely fascinating. The cast was perfect and the rewatch value of the film is high. Ironically time flies by swiftly with this flick. This is why I believe Zack Snyder’s Justice League is a true work of art. 9.8/10.

Zack Snyder's Justice League is one of the closest films to my heart. The visuals, the story, the emotional weight, the magnificent soundtrack and background score by tom holkenborg, the acting, the level of epicness it emits and the level of struggle the hardcore and never giving up dc fans and Zack Snyder went through makes it one of my most favourite movies till date. Even after one year of its release and watching it 8 times I still can't believe that a man like Zack Snyder exists in this very world who can make every single moment of a freakin' 4 hour long movie interesting, meaningful and intriguing. Even movies like the hobbit, the lord of the rings and the irishman which are at least half an hour shorter than zsjl become boring but this masterpiece just never disappoints no matter how many times you watch it. Movies like Avengers Infinity War, Avengers Endgame, Spider-Man No Way Home, The Dark Knight and Zack Snyder's Justice League are in a league of their own. This masterpiece is one of the best live-action superhero ensemble movie and one of the best superhero movies and hands down the best justice league movie (including animated and josstice league) till date.

The thing with The Avengers is that when it came out is was a pretty big deal and it seemed like a big deal but when I go back and watch it now it doesn't feel like it mainly cuz of movies like IW,ZSJL,ENDGAME etc the movie itself doesn't feel like it the shots feel like a tv show not every shot but many of the shots are generic atleast to me.
The movie came out when we never had a big superhero team up on big screen so it felt great but rewatching it now it feels decent, not really great and not really bad like it just served it's purpose for more greater films.

Each member is going through their own pain and trauma, so when they get together, truly together, you feel glad for not only the world being saved, but you feel happy for the Justice League Members themselves for getting through their problems.

The DCEU has one of the saddest legacies ever as a franchise. There are so many terrific films like Aquaman, Shazam, The Suicide Squad and the first Wonder Woman. And yet because of their poor creative choices during their first five years whether it’s the quality of Man of Steel and Batman v Superman or them meddling in movies like Justice League, most people are going to see this franchise as a failure and the amount of bad press caused by actors like Ezra Miller and Amber Heard have only made DC’s reputation infinitely worse.

    • @rajarshisantra8203

DC having a problematic reputation is something to be excepted because unlike marvel they are not obsessed with capitalizing the family friendly and formulaic "happy to go lucky" content(WB are, but not the creative side of the DC). The creative choices of MoS and BvS are really not that damaging once they are put in the context of the entire franchise and they are very wrongly criticized for reasons based on either bias or simple misunderstanding.

There is a simplicity to the first Avengers that I find charming over the one Avengers movies that feel less self contained. I feel you could watch first Avengers without any of the other movies prior and still get close to the same enjoyment out of it. I know it’s popular now to hate Whedon and while The Avengers is not perfect(as you said it kind of looks like an expensive tv show), it still set the bar for shared universes going forward for better or worse. It was a first and that novelty was a big deal. That’s probably why Age of Ultron was somewhat underwhelming for some people. The only way Marvel could recapture that magic was to raise the stakes and the scope with Infinity War and Endgame. In any case, I think it’s a really good film with a simple setup, fun action and engaging characters and banter. It’s a shame Marvel afterwards went over board with the Whedonification of everything and I say as someone who likes Whedon overall.
However even though I am not the biggest fan of Snyder’s Man of Steel or BVS, I loved his Justice League to my surprise..It felt like a giant comic book issue. An epic comic book rock opera. It has all the excesses that come with Snyder(slow motion, music video needle drops, self indulgent, self important), but here I kind of loved it. Just the sheer audacity of this 4 hour movie. The story is refreshingly simple after how convoluted BVS was and the movie is able to breathe allowing for actual character development which is usually not Snyder’s strong suit. This allows the big moments(emotional and visual) to land more. While I wish the film had more color, it is beautifully and stylistically shot. Junkie XL’s score is sweeping. The humor surprisingly lands and yet it’s never overbearing. It’s reasonably well paced despite it’s runtime and once again it gives it that epic feel. I never would have guessed Snyder was actually capable of making a heroic film, but I guess he wasn’t lying implying BVS was the dawn of justice. Excluding the Joker unnecessary epilogue, the ending montage hit me hard and this is the Justice League film I was hoping for.
I always thought Whedon was the better storyteller and Snyder the better filmmaker, but this might have changed my mind.

I did not watch Avengers in the theater when I was 13, because I only liked and knew Ironman and Hulk. No Spiderman, and no idea who the villains were. So rather than experiencing this epic movie with confusion, I missed out on it.
When I finally watched it on DVD, I loved it

Snyder’s JL would’ve been a huge hit had it been released in theatres. The scale of the movie felt huge and it would’ve surprisingly blown people away I think. Like the Amazon fight scene is crazy and the opening credits was such a cool way to open a movie and it literally picks up right after BvS. Steppenwolf would’ve surprised a lot of people too on how powerful and brutal he was. I mean the black suit and flash reversing time all would’ve made people jump and cheer in a packed theater.
Though besides these movies being their first outing as a team, I think IW would’ve been a better comparison bc the stories are pretty much the same.

My extra category: superhero line up scenes.
When I saw The Avengers for the first time I thought there wouldn't be a superhero line up as good as the Avengers but Zack Snyder's Justice League not only has a better superhero line up but has the best superhero line up. So the winner with the far, far superior superhero line up is Zack Snyder's Justice Leauge.

I’m gonna have to say Justice League is FAR BETTER and it’s not even close. The Avengers isn’t a bad film. Not at all, but it’s only good for a couple of laughs and an epic battle. And I don’t care what the common opinion is on this, I’ll watch Man of Steel and Batman v Superman any day over most of the 5 movies that lead up to The Avengers (only one that’s great is Iron Man which is way better than The Avengers movie itself). Avengers can be a great film, but man Justice League just gave us an amazingly put together film. Hell I’ll watch Justice League over any of the Avengers films (yes even over IW and Endgame).

The Avengers didnt age well, it was already an ugly as fuck looking movie even back in 2012 compared to other big blockbusters like The Dark Knight Rises and Prometheus, the thing looked like a TV movie at times carried by the novelty of watching all these characters togheter for the first time.
It not just a 2012 thing, most Marvel movies are ugly as fuck, its pretty telling when your 2021 Spider Man movie looks worse compared to movie made in 2004 about the same character, the only ones with any sort of good visuals are James Gunn Guardians movies.

The Avengers(2012): Superhero movie with light hearted tone, jokes, banter, great action and good cinematography but less character development & arcs, lack of storytelling and unfair treatment of main characters(Only Loki got better character development because of Tom Hiddleston's performance).
Zack Snyder's Justice League: Superhero movie with flawed yet deep understanding, dark & serious tone, great cinematography and better storytelling but had show deeper character development & arcs of each main characters, Steppenwolf and Darkseid were both scary and more intimidating villains & a redemption not just heroes but also Zack Snyder himself(Your daughter will so proud of you, Mr. Snyder).

I gave my copy of Avengers to my kids when I tried to rewatch it a third time, and just couldn't concentrate... no longer interested in that style of film making, I guess? However, I've rewatched ZSJL half a dozen times, and it just improves every time. Same with Infinity War... Watching the film a second time on disc was almost painful, but it was a fairly good laugh at the cinema. MCU films are pretty good fun first time round, but imho they're not robust enough for repeated viewings. One of my requirements from a great film is its longevity in rewatching it many times over.
