  • Zack Snyder's Justice League is finally here on HBO Max, and whether you think it's a good movie or a good DCEU or not, it is definitely better than 2017's Justice League directed by Avengers director Joss Whedon. To explore some core ways the Snyder Cut improved on Josstice League, let's revisit younger Filmento's videos to find those out -- "Justice League - Anatomy of a Failure" and "Why Infinity War worked and Justice League Failed". And now Warners let's make Justice League Part 2 and Justice League Part 3 with Darkseid and Anti life equation superman and knightmare and all that stuff. Ok.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
Batman (Ben Affleck) and Superman (Henry Cavill) clash over differing philosophies about what kind of heroism is needed to protect the world, while the public they're defending is becoming increasingly mindful of the damage that superheroes and masked vigilantes cause. However, the duo are soon forced to confront an even greater threat created by nefarious billionaire Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg). Directed by Zack Snyder, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice also co-stars Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jeremy Irons as Alfred the butler, and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman.

I would like to add something. In the Snyder Cut almost everything is set up properly. Nothing comes out of nowhere. Even Flash's ability to turn back time is properly set up, as they discussed it earlier in the movie. He said himself, that he has a rule to never go near the speed of light, as physics.exe stops working. And he cannot predict what kind of ramifications that could have. The fear of resurrecting superman is instilled in them by the motherbox itself, which is really cool.

    • @philiphobgen8283

You're right. I did wonder whether Flash screwed up the timing of reaching the motherboard when resurrecting superman as well. He approaches just as the box breaks the surface of the liquid but then as he gets closer the box actually rises put again toward his finger as he reaches out to touch it and push it in to the liquid as he arrives. Either way it is an awesome bit of foreshadowing.

One minor change I really like about the Snyder cut is how Aquaman no longer hates cyborg and instead deeply empathises with him and the loss of his father. It feels much more believable than just hating on him and further adds context to how Aquaman loves his own father.

Also, Superman was changed to “Symbol of Hope” to a kind of depressed character that only cares for Lois Lane. As I said, it’s probably more well-adapted in The Snyder Cut, and Superman was still decently well-adapted, but it’s still not really a perfect adaptation, nor is it what Superman was and stood for.

I feel like this scene where the Flash reverses time to spare a few more seconds can tie in with the quote "No sacrifice, no victory", because as we know, the Flash's ability to tap into the speed force cannot revert a tampered timeline back to its original, like in the Flashpoint paradox, but makes a completely new timeline out of the tampered timeline. I agree completely that it was completely wrong to cut out what I think is the most important scene in the Justice League film, because since he made a new timeline like in the Superman resurrection scene, where he again reversed time to spare a few seconds. This would mean that Darkseid wouldn't just conquer Earth and the heroes are still alive in some way. As we see in the resurrection scene, Cyborg gets a vision of a dark future, where both Aquaman and Wonder Woman are killed by Darkseid (I'm assuming Wonder Woman was killed by Darkseid here) and Superman is turned into a slave to Darkseid with the Anti Life Equation. This actually makes sense since Aquaman, Wonder Woman and Superman are kind of the power players of the Justice League. But back to the Flash reversing time to save the Justice League scene, by reversing time, Flash may have hastened that dark future somehow or maybe an entirely new dark future was made. This was also cut out in the Justice League. And the fact that Joss Whedon chose to cut out such crucial bits and pieces of the original film makes me believe that Joss Whedon and the Christmas bonus seeking idiots at Warner bros are in fact... well, idiots.
btw this is how I interpret the film and is entirely an opinion so feel free to give me shit if I'm wrong

It's really good I knew the motive behind his plan - his plan being to take over the world and his motive was to go home (as opposed to destroying the planet for the sake of it) - but I never cared because they didn't say why he would want to go home. He was hated, humiliated and expelled from his home world - why did he want to go home so badly? What was there for him to want it so badly? His actually loving family? Wealth? Fame? If my government humiliated me and kicked me out of my country I would say "fuck you". I would want to go back if my stuff/ family/ wealth or whatever was still there but they never said or implied that in the movie.
Take Thanos for example. You know his plan - find the Infinity Stones. His motive? To balance the universe. Why? Because he witnessed his home world and his species being annihilated due to lack of balance.

You are making it sound like ALL the jokes were in the Snyder cut when there were only a couple. Also, another reason why Snyder's jokes work better is because of the delivery of the line. Like, if you compare Gal's delivery of "Kal-el, no!" From Joss's to Snyder's, you can hear the difference. Same with Aquaman's "Alright" and "My man!" moment. They removed him while he was grieving, so to finish it, for Zack Snyder, it meant finding peace. You can tell how much this meant to him by the sheer number of times he thanks everyone for enabling him and by the credits when he dedicates the film to his daughter. I recommend watching Mauler’s analsis to see a well written counter argument to see if you still feel this way.
Personally, I like seeing Flash actually saving people from Steppenwolf than just giving motivational speech to people ascending stairs. I prefer him saving people in peril than running around in a circle only to be told by cyborg he’s ready for Barry who just keeps running only to tripped by someone shooting at him because he couldn’t widen his circumference to be out of weapons range. And he sure didn’t need that much build up to reverse time so why spend so much lapping the area charging?
I like not seeing Cyborg cause a woman endless criminal investigations and hardship because he stole $100,000 from someone and gave it to her to spend. You say it was a humane bit of charity for a pure soul, but that’s still grand larceny and she’s complicit in it. Might have been a nice lesson about when _not_ to use one’s powers. Also helps not to have a whole sequence of Cyborg being told by his dad he has control of every bit of technology on Earth to then never use it. I like seeing Silas Stone alive in the end because he didn’t supercharge the box to lead them to the big obvious final battleground. At least with his father not dead, they can patch their relationship and Cyborg is all moody declaring “fuck the world!”
I like Wonder Woman not murdering a bunch of guys recklessly with her battle style painting the walls with their bloody impacts and micro-nuking them with her bracelet attack. It was nice getting to see her and Bruce discuss the issues of Bruce’s fragility as the only one without powers and the mental drama of having to lead people into battle which might cost them their lives.
It was so nice getting an explanation of why Barry and Victor took their time exhuming Superman’s corpse since they felt it a little disrespectful.
It’s easy to hate on Joss. But he was having to cut a lot of bullshit Zac filmed and may have left in. The Snyder Cut kinda reeks of a workprint especially to differentiate itself from the theatrical which means who knows what would have still been cut if both A) Snyder had been there the whole time, and B) there wasn’t an alternate cut to gage audience reaction against to have to course correct away from. Don’t like Aquaman’s “Yeah!” during the end battle? That was not something Joss came up with, but it didn’t sit well so Snyder muted Momoa’s audio.
But that’s just me; you’re free to your feelings.

Honestly, the comics, the Superman animated series, even the Injustice 2 fighting game all had better Darkseids. I was massively disappointed by him. Just another tall CG man who is evil for evils sake, with no other personality traits to describe him with, none of his trademark intelligence or wisdom to share. Just generic "badass" movie villain lines with a deep distorted voice. Instantly deflate his threat by have him easily beaten by random GC characters you have no attachment to. This is the guy who inspired Thanos. Now they made him look like the store brand knock off with this movie.
You can say this is a cool line because it about the only thing he actually does. It has to be a top 5 moment, because what else does he actually do in this movie to add up to 5 moments? The worst part is this movie added a time travel deus ex machina which would have been a perfect time to showcase and tease DS for future movies. Before Flash reverses time, have DS step through the portal and "win". Have him Omega beam most of the team with easy and then go toe to toe with Superman in a fight, hands behind his back crushing him verbally before one decisive blow nocks back Superman and they stare down as the mother boxes activate. Then have flash reverse time and win as they do normally in the movie. But showing DS as an actual threat for the future, and being true to the character. I can't believe any true Darkseid fan is happy with what we actually were shown in this movie.

Regarding Superman and the Justice League, the main function of the Justice League has been to cover Superman's weakness (kryptonite and magic). Essentially, because Superman has a weakness that literally depowers him, the League ensures that if some mook shoots him with a Kryptonite bullet, there will still be many strong heroes waiting to face that enemy.
Superman's magic weakness also is exploitable in a manner where, in certain instances, much less strong heroes with high magic resistance are much better than Superman at handling magical villains. Wonder Woman and Aquaman are actually much stronger against mages than Superman since Superman's defense doesn't work against magic and he's vulnerable to magical control.

And really, given that insane stat gap i doubt Superman can't just blitz and instant kill whatever mage he fights if much slower and weaker Wonder Woman and Aquaman can give those mages a fight.

    1. Continuity details from the previous movies used right instead of made fun of
    2. Less joke but some of the serious scenes still have comedic elements that don't wear down the seriousness
    3. Every character is useful and each played a big role
    4. New characters (Aquaman, Cyborg, Flash) are properly briefly introduced and actually become this movie's emotional device as they should be (especially Cyborg since he's basically the closest to the Mother Boxes, the plot device of the movie)
    5. Steppenwolf is well established as a villain
    6. Mother Boxes finally explained
    7. Teases towards Darkseid's entrance into the franchise are there
    8. Ben Affleck's 20-years-of Batman is a no jokester
    9. No more vibrant eye-killer lighting (seriously though, Josstice League's color tones really hurt my eyes in the theater)

To be fair to Whedon (whom I have little to no love for lol) he was brought in late by the studio to finish someone else's work. I've heard a lot about the sheer production hell with Josstice League. If it was either Whedon's *or* Snyder's film from beginning to end, and they were given time and ample creative freedom from the studio, the original film might not have been that bad. Maybe it wouldn't have been as good as the Snyder Cut.
Either way, I blame the studios for interfering and panicking once again.

Though I agree 100% that the Snyder Cut is the true Justice League movie, I have to acknowledge that Batman line to Flash about "saving one person". It's the only thing I liked in that cut because it showed veteran leadership to a rookie hero. Other than that, this is the most detailed and accurate take I have seen :)

One thing I actually really liked from the Josstice League is a scene you put here for funsies: The "save one person" moment between Batman and Flash. You see, that's actually a great moment, because Bruce can see Barry's inexperience fighting actual super beings, so he tells Barry that:
1- He can help even if it is one person,
2- He can save everyone, he just needs a little push, a little bit more confidence in his abilities,
3- Batman knows that saving one person can make the difference.
I may be reaching, but I truly believe that with those words Batman shows he's a great hero, helping anyone you can is better than helping noone at the end.
