Kayak Camping Texas - 3 Day Guadalupe River Wilderness
Vložit
- čas přidán 20. 10. 2020
- The Guadalupe River is iconic. We spent 3 days paddling through the Texas wilderness hammock camping in giant cypress trees and fighting rapids. Tag along on this scenic stretch of river.

You and your friends are the reason I started kayak camping with my friends.
Man that is so cool to hear!! Thank you for sharing that
How do you get back to where you launched from once you've reached the end? @GatewoodBrown
It’s things like this that make you just appreciate and enjoy life. Great memories to look back on down the road.
Couldn’t have said it better myself. Thank you!
I just saw this randomly and Man this reminds me of when me and my friends used to go up and down Guadalupe back in the 90’s. A couple of them are no longer with us but the memories are eternal. Thank you very much.
I’m stoked these brought back some old memories! Maybe y’all should get a reunion trip together out there
I remember you. I was the guy was 14 and on acid and had never been to New Braunfels or the Guadalupe River and when I saw the water was so beautiful I was barefooted I jumped out and took off running and when that cold hit me I went into shock and in the sharp rocks on my feet and down with the current I went a bunch of bikers had to grab me that was a trip
Awesome. I bought the Remote Backpack as a start to starting my dream of kayaking and Trail excursions. I'm excited.🏞🌄🛶🥾
Thank you so much for supporting the channel! I hope your adventures are made better by it. Cheers!
Editing skills and quality of your work is out of this world.
I appreciate that, Zach!
I've gotta say gatewood, I have a love for kayaking, a love for GOOD coffee, and a love for hammock camping but when you mix all of them together. This is priceless my friend!! Especially when surrounded with good friends!
Haha I totally agree man! Probably why that combo is basically every one of my videos haha
@@GatewoodBrown definitely one heck of a vibe to catch and ride out brother! 🤙 I'll have to get out and tube the San Marcos river this summer! Haha
@@foxhoundoutdoor8431 love that phrase. I’ll have to start using ‘ride out the vibe’. Have fun on the SM! It’s a party out there
@@GatewoodBrown a patch, sticker, or Tshirt. With "ride out the vibe🤙" on it, I'd buy it! Haha

I grew up trekking and fishing on the Guadalupe. Thanks for reminding me of my childhood.
Very cool region to explore as a child. I’m sure it hasn’t changed too much once you’re actually on the river!
Summer is back!
would like to go back out to buffalo river this fall, but might have to hold till spring next year... thinking about neches because i just bought property out there.
South llano, upper Guadalupe and putting together a Florida trip I tend to do more biking and hiking in the fall and winter.
@@davidkarr9952 the good ole neches! Big thicket is an underrated spot
@@BlueEffigy yeah most people shy away from rivers during winter. Can’t blame them! It can get cold real quick if you fall in
I'm stuck close to home which means day trips on the Trinity, Brazos, Benbrook Lake and Lake Worth.
"these moments are fleeting" You're so right. I wish I had done more stuff like this in my younger years before kids came along. Love seeing you and your buddies out there making memories. Just a month ago I did my first kayak/canoe camping trip with a couple buddies on the Brazos (PK to Hwy 4). I hadn't seen one of the guys in years. We picked up right where we left off and had a great trip. Your videos were part of my research on the packing and planning. Thanks for sharing your experiences and knowledge with us.
That line was kind of sad to realize, but makes you appreciate the surroundings even more. With life getting more busy each year we are trying to squeeze in as much as possible. Isn't it cool how paddling can reconnect you with old friends like time hasn't passed? That's one of the best things about it. Thanks for tuning in, Josh!
you, River Kings, and Headwater Kayak are all tied as my favorite paddling channels. The positive attitude of you, Dan, and Pete is motivating and encouraging and that's what keeps me tuned in.
@@joshinfwtx4506 those are all solid channels. I’ve messaged with dan and his level of knowledge is pretty wild. Same with Pete! I was fortunate enough to do a trip with Pete as well. Dan offered to have me out to the west coast so I’m looking forward to making that happen as well.
@@GatewoodBrown now you're just making me jealous ;-)
Take your kids . Teach them while theyre young !
You have a great crew men to enjoy nature with. Sooo much fun
I agree man. Very thankful for these dudes!
13:20 the slowmo of your friends 🥺🙏
Truly incredible experiences you guys are having!
Thank you! I enjoy taking moments like those because it’s easy not to appreciate what we’ve been blessed with. Hopefully it’s something we never stop
Another amazing adventure. Thanks for all the work you do to capture, edit and share this.
Thank you for watching all of the videos TFC! With you all there’s no community to upload these for
So glad I was shown your channel, these videos really capture those unforgettable moments that are just magical. I just got a kayak recently and I'm so stoked to start getting out there and hopefully camp soon. Your content is really inspiring to watch, keep it up!
That means a lot! Like you said, we are all chasing memories and being able to put them into video form has been awesome. We will keep them coming!
Dang dude nice job! Your videos are looking great. Nice camera work too, good looking stuff in there.
Thanks man I appreciate you taking the time to watch!
damm bro that was super cool and you got a good bunch of friends there as well
We’re definitely fortunate to have these buddies around
Y'all bro's are Lucky to have a great bunch of bro's that like to kayak together and explore. Awesome man. Keep it up.
I’m so thankful for the bros. They’re what keep these trips fun!
Excellent video! I know the exact feeling of the last day at camp. That bittersweet feeling as if the party is ending, for the moment at least. I've lived in Central Texas for 28 years. I appreciate all your efforts showing yet another side of this beautiful state. Excited for the next one. Cheers!
Thank you MM! I really appreciate you taking the time watch the video. The state definitely doesn’t get enough love in the outdoors community (outside of TX outdoorsmen). It’s one of the best in the union in that regard. Packing up camp is never fun, but the promise of returning makes the burn hurt a little less
This is definitely my favorite video of yours.! Great story and quality! Im sitting here watching it before I go in to have a tooth pulled lol! Good one Gatewood!
Wow thank you, PCF! I always appreciate seeing you in the comments, hopefully that tooth pulling went well. Cheers!
The Guadalupe is so beautiful. I've spent many a day kayaking it. Those cypress trees on the sides, its just so peaceful.
The furthest downstream ive made it was Victoria. This video got me wanting to get back on that river bad lol. Another good video my man
It sure is TOF! That was my first time spending considerable time out there and we will definitely be going back. Thanks for watching!
Would love to see a separate video of all your put in and take outs on the rivers you run..?
Living for vicariously through you guys❤❤
We are glad to have you along for the ride!
Awesome video Gatewood!! Beautiful river and your buddies and espresso and good food and hammocks. What else could you ask for. Now that’s how you have fun in the outdoors!! 👍👍
Cheers, Jason! I wish the water was cleaner (usually is) but everything else was on point! Still need to get up to KY or have you down here for a paddle.
another great adventure and video, your very lucky to have a bunch of friends that can go and experience this with you! Really enjoy your trips, thanks so much for sharing!!! w.
Thank you Walt! Yessir I feel very fortunate to have these guys for trips
Great video! My wife and I love the Guadalupe and have toobed every part of the lower part many many times. We are looking into kayaking and eventually kayak camping and these videos are very inspiring. Keep up the great work!
Thank you SA! Each section of the guad feels so different. The upper is night and day from the lower. Definitely worth checking out
Another great video Gatewood. Can’t wait for the next one!
Thank you, mirto! The next one is underway this weekend!!
What a dope video! Looks like yall had an awesome time on the Guadalupe. It sure does have my heart!
It’s a great place!
yup a trip like this is definitely something that i have to do. thanks for the awesome edit cheers
Thanks for tuning in!
Awesome video, Gatewood. Thanks man, really enjoyed it. I am paddling the San Marcos river starting at Spencer's Canoes in Martindale. Taking out about 5 miles down stream. This is my second paddle.
Hey Tom! Glad to see you’re out there paddling. The San Marcos is on our short list to do
The bald cypress trees make Texas rivers some of the most beautiful.
I agree. They’re so unique and lend very well to camping!
Another great and well filmed adventure. Everyone should have a band of buddies like you have.
Thank you so much George! I sure do feel fortunate that we’ve been able to stay together for so oong
What an awesome video and experience; keep 'em coming.
Thank you Bruce! More on the way
I really love your kayak camping. It is amazing!! Love your video ,too 👍👍
Thank you so much! It’s been a fun outlet to connect with nature!
Great narration good friends good times can't wait to hit the rivers to Camp
Thank you so much Kelly! Camping on the river is a blast
Great video of the camping trip. Nothing quite like a river trip.
Thank you WF! The river is always a welcoming place. Just need to get better at fishing haha
You guys are inspirational and awesome!!! I will be floating camping on the Buffalo River 35 miles starting tomorrow.
Wow thank you so much! Enjoy the Buffalo, I’ve heard it’s amazing!
Good medicine Gatewood! Looked like a great trip with plenty of coffee!
Hey KW!! Yessir the outdoors cure a lot. Man...the crew has gotten really into coffee lately haha
I’ve been to all these rivers, but watching your video has inspired me to kayak on them.
It gives you a whole new perspective!
I just found your channel, and subscribed. I love Kayaking here on the James and the Chicahominy!
I just love your videography! And the way you tell a story. And as I really am not a fan of Texas, your videos are changing my mind. I think a trip out that way is coming in the future.
Thank you James! Welcome to the community, stoked to have you apart of it. I live sharing these kayak camping videos and I’m excited for the uploads to come this year. Should be a pretty stout back catalog for ya to enjoy in the time being! Texas can be stunning for sure!
This is the best cinematic camping trip I’ve ever seen. Well done keep them coming
Thank you so much Matt! Means a lot
Just came across your channel and I really enjoy your videos. I also love the storytelling you do too! Keep it up!
Thank you so much! These videos are all about the story. Just trying to convey what all went down
When I'm backpacking I like to conserve weight, and it just makes more sense to bring pre-ground coffee and a stainless mesh tea ball.
For the logistics of that grinder and press, I can bring a six month supply of coffee, and the water filtration for it lol.
That’s a good system! We enjoy coffee a lot and are willing to bring the extra weight for that. Everyone has different priorities which I think is cool!
Paddled 26 miles of the Llano last weekend. Thought about trying the Guadalupe next so this is perfect motivation. Houston based so I'm looking for closer options than the 5 hours to the Llano. Looking forward to what comes next!
You really put in the miles! The Guad is a great balance between distance from Houston and solid Hill Country paddling. The Llano is awesome but way the heck out there.
Love the barstool style camp food reviews. Dave would be proud
Haha we definitely found some inspiration from them. Had to cut a few parts out too lol
Thanks for bringing us on such an epic trip. I'm gonna show this to my pals and try to convince them to buy some kayaks.
Y'all absolutely have to give it a try!
Dude said "grown as individuals" on a 2 night camping trip!!!🤣🤣
That’s unfortunate you don’t grow, learn and develop on short trips like this. If you aren’t growing it’s your own fault for not trying.
@@GatewoodBrown You made it sound like a life milestone. But, maybe I am being overly judgmental. Everyones life experiences are different. While in the military I had to explain things that I never thought I would have to explain to another legal adult. Please don't let my cynicism rob you of the excitement of learning and experiencing something new. Be happy.
It’s all good Scott! Everyone’s journey is different and while this was an easy trip, we still learned a thing or two. For instance, our breakfast tacos. That was a new concept and worked out very well. We had a good crew for sure, luckily nothing was a surprise but I hear ya, some adults do need coddling.
lol. Cool video with very cringey dialog/ narrating.
Great friends making great memories, priceless!
This is the truth! So thankful for all these excursions
We did some camping out at Guadalupe River State park back in September. I was half expecting to run into you out there! Great video!
I’ve heard great things about that park! I guess we would’ve been just a few miles away from you out there. Maybe one day we will run into you!
This was a beautiful narration of a kayaking Adventure through a beautiful place with great friends. I just happened to come across one of the videos a couple of days ago and it was so fascinating. I have been checking out other videos and they all really good with beautiful views I'm going to subscribe because I feel like I'm on the adventure also.
Thank you so much for this kind comment! We are fortunate to have these places to visit and friends to go with. Welcome to the community!
I'm pretty sure I saw our swimming hole for just a couple of seconds at the Knibbe Ranch. Great spot.
So cool! Lots of amazing scenery on this stretch
I feel like I’m repetitive with each of your vids, but you continue to raise the bar with awesome trips and top notch editing and production! I’ve slipped into hunting mode, but now you have me jonesing for a fall paddle!
Man I really appreciate that. It’s a lot of work but so worth it when the community gets to watch. If we get some rain you’ll definitely have to go for a paddle!
A couple buddies and I are planning a trip there at the end of March was wondering if I could get some info on the place. Trying to find best place to enter into the river and where you can or cannot camp that kinda stuff. Awesome videos!!
Paddling through the State Park is fun. People all out in the water and you just paddle through. They are all looking at you and you are just nodding and paddling. LOL I thought of the scene in Young Guns where they ride the horses through the Indian sacred grounds after doing peyote. "They can't see us, we're in the spirit world" LOL
Haha I love just passing through and waving. People are always like where did you come from. Great scene!
Really Nice video and Beautiful nature.Enjoyed It Very Much. Looking foreward for more. 🤗🤗🤗
Thank you! I’ve got one in the editing bag as we speak!

Beautiful trip, I would do it in a heartbeat. Too far away, for now. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, OS! Wait for some rains to fall and then make the trek. It's all pretty low right now.
@@GatewoodBrown I am in Canada, that far. Next paddle for me will be in the spring.

I'll be good to go by spring . Have a good one my friend .
Man...the premade burgers at HEB are out of this world. My favorite's to be completely honest. Spring is a great time to go and not too far away.
Ahh to find friends like this, quite magical
Definitely feel fortunate!
Love the video! Thank you for bringing us such great content. I'm in the state above you and would love to go on a kayaking trip with you at some point!
It's my pleasure, Jamie! We love going on these trips and putting edits together.
this is the real guadalupe. the other video from five months back was 'technically' the guadalupe but its the gruene river... a small 2 hr lazy river. its cool but this route is the real thing. glad to see you guys found it.
It's amazing how different the two sections are. Both are fun! The 'Gruene River' has bigger rapids but the upper stretches are more scenic without all of the commercialization.
@@GatewoodBrown for sure! Looking forward to warmer weather already!

@@GatewoodBrown we got back from a 2 day kayak and camp on VC! It was SO FUN! Got caught in a storm that poured on us but there was a beauty and thrill even in that experience. Camped on the perfect sand beach spot. Learned a lot from this first experience and can't wait for the next time!

Thank you, Danny! I just might have a trip getting planned right now.
The bridge they where under in the beginning is in near boerne. I used to go to that same spot all the time as a kid!
That bridge is a great access point!
Big fan of your channel and work man and a fellow Texan and kayak camper/YTer!
But man, as a WFR and Whitewater Rescue Tech, it’s a huge no no to paddle at night especially on unfamiliar waters brother. Have seen enough horrible events with experienced paddlers during the day on popular waters, just would hate for something to happen to you or your crew man! And we can’t forget it’s putting it out there for the viewers that “it’s ok” to do stuff like this/giving bad info.
I mean all the best man and really enjoyed this video otherwise and your excellent cinematography as always!
Look forward to the next video!!!
Thanks my man! I also have to say that I’ve been a fan of your channel as well. You buffalo river videos were so well done and constantly get recommended to me haha. Totally agree about night paddling. I had scouted something very close to the launch so our plan was to only go a matter of yards during the evening sun. Turns out it the site wasn’t ideal and we were running late so we had to push on at night. From here on out I think we will just camp at the launch or shoot for an early morning drive instead of night paddling. I really appreciate you taking the time to write out that comment, I bet a lot of people will see it and learn a thing or two. Stay safe out there!
@@GatewoodBrown that’s awesome man, had no idea you had seen some of my stuff, thanks for that!
I totally get it man, every year that Buffalo trip rolls around, Mother Nature changes our plans haha but that’s part of the fun. I hope I wasn’t sounding like a jerk man, honestly best intentions. But you guys rolled with punches which sometimes all you can do.
Man, we should try and get together sometime and do a trip!
Rolling with the punches is just a fact when it comes to river camping. Yeah we should! I’ve been wanting to head up north one of these days
That’s spot on red wolf. Tons and tons of planning and prep goes into these trips. While on the river it’s even more important to be intentional. We were always in control but like you said, sometimes it’s better not to risk it. Hope you’ve been well!
@@GatewoodBrown let me know man, we can get something awesome planned
Enjoyed the video, looked awesome
Thank you! I can resonate with your username...
I see you made it to our neck of the woods. Cheers
Yessir! These are your stomping grounds. Didn’t have much luck fishing but we also didn’t try that hard lol
Can you do a video on you cooler/cooking setup? How do you keep things cold on these trips? How do you cook while keeping weight and space down? Love the videos!!
That’s a great idea! I will certainly do that. I’ve got a few hacks that may help extend refrigeration times too
I love the Guadalupe river but it's low flow, the best part is just after it combines with the Comal in New Braunfels, it becomes higher flow and pretty clear after that because the comal is crystal clear.
Yeah it’s pretty low right now even though historically it is one of the better flowing rivers in the area
Hey man how's it going. Great video man enjoy watching it. I love watching these videos with you and your buddies get together for a trip. I Member what 1 did back in June for Father's Day when both of my feet were in the cast. it was only a day but it was a lot of fun and I did enjoyed it. My fall kayaking probably just going to be in my local River if I can do that. I've been Trucking 🚛 so hard with this hurricane relief that I am dying to go kayaking. You know you've been Trucking 🚛 too long when your body starts to hurt from Trucking 🚛.
Hey Mack! Always glad to have you watching. Haha you need to escape the truck and get on the river for an afternoon. Stick in there!!
@@GatewoodBrownyou are welcome man I love watching. I'm definitely hanging in there. My wife is a District boss for her team in the hurricane relief and it's about to be over. Great video and editing work! A couple questions, what drone did you use and more importantly can you offer the details of the camping espresso set up!
Looking forward to the next...
Thank you, Rudy! This is the DJI Mavic 2 Pro. Yessir! It is the Nanopresso by Wacaco, found on Amazon. It does a solid job if you're familiar with how to make espresso. They also have an adapter if you prefer the espresso pods.

That area kind of reminds me of a combination of Arizona and Florida Florida with spring-fed river in the cypress trees Arizona with the semi desert like Terrain two of my favorite States
Yeah I totally agree! Definitely a unique landscape
So loved the detailed video on the daytrip for lower Guadalupe - what were your put-in / takeout for this trip? Flying into Houston Wed - leaving Sunday. Would need to rent kayak and get a shuttle service -but would love to do an overnight along the river - and make a 2 day trip. Any recommendations? Possible for any local outfitters?
Thank you! Lost of outfitters in the Gruene area as well as others for the upper sections above canyon lake
Fantastic video! What do you do about stuff falling out of your kayak? It looks like your stuff is just laying in it without any straps.
Thank you! Well ideally everything should be bolted down. But flows are pretty low so I haven’t flipped in a long time. Wants it gets gnarly I’ll definitely be strapping down
Love your videos mate
Thank you, Stephen!
Another great video man! 🤘Me and the wife did the lower stretch of this river not long ago down by new Braunfels after eating your video on it. Haven’t actually camped along the river yet. What were your put in and take out points for this trip?? Thanks again! Keep up the great work brother!
Thanks, Christian! That stretch down by NB is pretty rowdy with all of those rapids. It would be tough to camp down there with how much commercialization there is.
Really cool. How do you find legal spots to camp and how do you store water? I know you use a life straw for a lot of these but wasn’t so sure about this one.
Thank you! We try to stick to islands as those are the least ambiguous places to camp. That's especially critical when trying to understand Texas Navigability Law. We also bring gallon jugs of water and keep them in our Kayaks if water quality will be an issue.
Awesome video loved every minute!! We just got two kayaks and want to do this! My question is.. I didn't see a big cooler... How do y'all keep the meat and cheese and stuff cold ?
We each bring personal 20 can sized soft coolers! That’s usually only good for a two day trip though
Love your vids. Very well edited. Moved to New Braunfels from Houston about 16 months ago and looking to explore these rivers. Brought my 15ft sot I used on the coast. Looking to find some access points. Any tips welcome. Checking links to your gear to outfit with.
Thank you, Kieth!! I'm jealous you live in NB, it's at the heart of all these wonderful rivers. I'd recommend checking the used markets for something around 10 to 12' but for now, your kayak will do just fine. Check low water crossings, they're all pretty good for access, especially above canyon lake.
"Usually if it's crunch it's overcooked" sir, let me introduce you to my friend smash burgers.
Smash burger does make a tasty burger haha
That bocon burger looked 10 /10
It was. Fire grilled on the river after a long day makes it taste that much better too
Where did you launch from for this trip?
You guys are my faveourit kind of crazy and i love it ❤❤❤❤❤
That means a lot thank you!
Fish the area between your takeout and the 2nd campsite pretty frequently. Sometimes take my paddle board and go upstream from there.
Beautiful spot for sure! Any fish?
@@GatewoodBrown Mostly smaller stuff of just about every type you would expect but nothing to get to excited for.. at least not yet.
@@brbeckTX yeah it seems like there’s a lot of structure for fish to hang out on but the water was pretty muddy during season
Anyone know what kayak he uses? I checked his gear page and it’s the only thing excluded on the list. I like how it’s deep in the passenger compartment
I currently use the crescent LiteTackle II and absolutely love it. Hope that helps!
Another great edit. I’ll bet you guys were hot those nights!
Thanks, Caleb! Ya know, it was just at the end of summer when the evenings were starting to cool off enough not to sweat all night haha. Definitely used a summer weight sleeping bag though
You lads would enjoy Ireland. Nothing quite like this emerald isle to kayak and wild camp; from the oceans, coastlines and islands, rivers and lakes - full of hidden relics. Literally thousands of miles of adventures in a mystical land. Yet, when I'm out there...I see no fellow kayaker adventurers enjoying it. Time to bring it alive.
I’d love to do some exploring in Ireland! I may go there sometime next year as my sister is moving to Scotland. I’ve heard right to roam is a thing there too. Pretty cool!
@@damienmayne7205 oh that would be wild to explore at night! Kudos to you for that
@@GatewoodBrown Go get yourself a pair, they're but 200 dollars. Called 'Nightfox Swift' on a site youtube won't let me name, but begins with A and is the largest rainforest in the world haha. Thank me later. Now you lads will now all be out at night instead of daytime with your NV on ha! The animal kingdom comes alive at night. Everything is awake and active. From the ocean, to the rivers, and forests. It's thriving with life at night. You wouldn't believe the things I've seen. I'm going for a 10 mile night paddle to see porpoises, seals, otters, owls, badgers, foxes tonight. Amazing experience!!
Great video! What is the brand of espresso maker you use in this video?
Hey Brandon! This was the nanopresso by Wacaco. It does a pretty decent job if you’re into making espresso and understand the different steps
What section of the Guadalupe is this?
It’s up there by comfort, above canyon lake.
What kind of kyack do you use

Hey, I love your content. I recently moved to San Marcos, TX and we love dry camping. I guess my question is, where did you camp on the Guadalupe river? We want to plan a trip but have no idea where we can set up camp without being on private property. I might need to look harder on the map.
Check out the navigability laws and it’ll start to make sense where you can camp. Islands change every time it rains so it’s hard to say for certain where you could camp. Just default to islands and you’ll be in the clear!
Hey bro, where on the Guadalupe did you put in and get out? I need to do this!
Check out Rebecca creek
