Definitely got some bad air intrusion and glowplug problems. These IDIâs actually start pretty well in the cold with a good fuel and glowplug system. Something that is overlooked in these trucks is the batteries. Most people donât use batteries with high enough CCAâs and it wonât turn over fast enough for reliable ignition in the cold. Iâve got 1250âs in mine and it starts like a brand new production truck
Ran mine with bad batteries for over 3 months, wouldnt start cold without a jump even after being plugged in. Just replacing the cranking battery fixed that immediately

Manual glow plug setup on a monetary switch! Hop in on a cold morning hold the button for 10-15 seconds and it will fire up on all cylinders I had my old 6.9 IDI set up like that and it started up so much easier in the cold, I did it to my 2002 7.3 powerstroke last year and it fires up on the first try
They are great trucks, I only ended up here because I miss that old 6.9 IDI had a turbo from the 94 7.3 IDI on it and it was still slow lol but they are so easy to work on and sound amazing

Turbo or n/a? Trying to figure out an exhaust for my dump truck. I want to stack it but I don't want something terribly loud since theres no turbo. Unbolted the muffler and it was terrible but it also was right behind the cab under a dump bed
Real question here. I just got myself a 2001 7.3 with only 169,000 miles on it. Is it worth it to add a tuner for better mpg and of course of that comes more HP and torque. Iâm just looking to get better mpg and oh course longevity out of the truck. I put between 60-80 miles a day on (long drives) to and from work.
If you donât romp on it Iâd suggest it because your 4r100 with be destroyed very quickly with a tuner on it. If you do decide to get a tuner make sure you buy an intake and downpipe minimum to keep that air colder and more dense and so your crushed pos downpipe can actually flow. Iâve got a 95 with a downpipe straight pipe, intake and a ts 6 position and it is night and day with the power. I donât notice fuel mileage being much different because I have 4.10s. Youâll feel a massive difference being a 01 truck.

So before going to the TS tuner (which was the one I keep seeing be best in reviews) I should upgrade my intake ? Whatâs the downpipe? Sorry, Iâm just starting to learn about diesels. Itâs all new to me. Iâm a maintenance and engineering guy of 12 years but the first in the automotive field now. Sorry if my questions come off.. unclear. Just wanting to be safe and smart with my investment here.

Just keep it with a straight exhaust get a new intake get rid of the old shit one and just drive the thing it'll last you for ever.

Depends on where you live. Where I live in SE OK, green grass is always growing, whether it hangs below freezing or mid-summer. The winter grass replaces the summer grass and we essentially have green all year round. Even this past winter when it got below 0 and snowed 8 inches, when it melted it was as green as it ever gets.

@@TheRealLemongrab black smoke comes out of diesels simply because itâs burning excess fuel. That smoke is unburned diesel fuel or oil coming out of that truck, itâs common when diesel start cold. A Lamborghini swapped truck is more expensive than keeping that truck the way it is, heâll have to buy the engine, parts to go with that engine, transmission and many other parts. Lamborghini is a great car company and all, but the engines are made for performance, not work like the 7.3 idi. The 7.3 IDI Ford is known for itâs reliable nature, it can take hundreds of thousands of miles of torture until it breaks.
Thats not a cold start, if there's green plants in the background and no snow on the ground then fuck your cold start that goes for everyone doing a cold start
