I have a 1995 K3500 dually with the 6.5 turbo in it and I’ve never had any trouble with it. It has a 5 on the floor and I tow 16,000 LBS on a gooseneck with it every day. Anyone who knows the Detroit motors knows that’s a lot of weight especially from a 1990s truck. I can get about 28 MPG in the truck and it’s a really sold vehicle. I also have a fully restored 1984 Chevy blazer with the 6.2 Detroit and it’s a civilian blazer not one of the military ones. I restored it but didn’t rebuild the motor and it’s still going strong too. Detroit is a really solid motor and I think they’re underestimated
@@MrSilvertech If you still have your truck you can add a fuel pump prime wire in the under hood fuse box, you use a diode and go from the glow plug fuse to the fuel pump relay signal wire. When you turn on the key and the glow plugs cycle the fuel pump will run and prime the system, if you haven't done the lift pump harness upgrade to the oil pressure switch you can just put the diode to the fuel pump relay and have it go from the ignition fuse instead of the glow plug fuse so any time the key is on the fuel pump will run, I've done this on many 94/95 6.5 trucks including my own, the stock fuel pump can make from 4-9psi constant pressure depending on it's health.

They were and are good engines when not used as, and treated like a heavy duty truck diesel, like the Cummins, for example. The 6.2 wasn't classified as a heavy duty diesel. Naturally if you're going to try pushing it beyond it's intended use and expect hundreds of thousands of miles, that might not be the best pick, but for normal use & normal towing, and keeping it properly maintained they are fine. My dad had 12 with little problems, and all over 150,000 miles minimum.

Was sad to have to let it go when we moved last year. Wanted to do a Cummins swap in it.

Just got mine fired up today after working on it for one year. Bought it 14. April last year, and i got it running just now. It was mostly a hobby project, so i didn't spend more than maybe 300 hrs on it. Learned it all as i did it. Bad IP, needed replacement, but i fixed it instead

You are referring to the 5.7L Oldsmobile,which was a turd.The 6.2L & 6.5L are actually awesome engines,with just low power,but they were made for high fuel efficiency to begin with.The Military has used both of them for a long time,in the HMMWV,before the MATV and JLTV came into existence.

I vividly remember the times it was -10 or -15 and I had to crawl under the hood in my High School Parking Lot and pull the Glow Plug wires, so I could use Ether... The real trick was getting the wires disconnected, without slipping off the ice covered bumper and busting the hell out of my legs!

I have a 1988 GMC one ton with the 6.2 n/a 4sd trans with 373 gears it won't go over 55 it has a govenor on it that previous owner had put onhow do I remove it so I can at least go 60 to 65
Isnt cycling the glow plugs for when you dont have a bypass switch. So him cycling the key does nothing when he just holds the button. And have the button on the right is weird. How do you hold it while turning the key?

You would just true keys on then hold button let go then hold button again if you wanted. Turning keys on and off does nothing. This is a common mod for when the glow plug circuit dies or breaks.
It's a great diesel! GM designed the 6.2 for fuel economy. They wanted something that would get 20+ mpg. It was a naturally aspirated engine which means no turbo. A lot of farms/ranchs used them to haul hay and do small light work with having the great fuel mileage. Like anything take care of it and it will last. Mine had a turbo. It definitely woke up the 6.2! I wish I still had the truck but o well.

You may have issues with the paraffin freezing in your dlesel fuel, it coats the fuel filter and clogs it - not to mention the fuel lines! When temperatures drop below freezing, an old trick is to run a 5% gasoline mixture (i.e. at the gas statiopn, 1 gal regular gas, then fill'er up with diesel) ALSO toying with the glow plugs and the radio is a bad idea, power those plugs for 15":20" and then just turn the key and start the engine! Once she's turning, NEVER throttle the engine as diesels will never die out like gas engines. Just let her idle and warm up for a few minutes before you start off...

"wind chill" does not have any affect on a hunk of metal. dosent mater if its -10 and -10 and windy, the truck is still sitting at one constant temp

Did you use a different fuel pump?? I just had to bypass my lifter pump with a electric fuel pump.
