This idi sounds like a gasser because I don’t think the early gen 7.3 came with turbos. They started doing turbos in the 7.3 in the mid to end years of the idi’s if I remember correctly but I could be wrong.
@@zachshipley1689 I could not agree more a IDI 6.9 / 7.3 sound alot like a 460 big block with a very mild cam and open headers and theyre cackle is low tone so is a pleasant sound compared to 90% of engines the exhaust note is one of the key defining things of a 6.9 / 7.3 IDI you can literally pick them out of a crowd with theyre exhaust note / sound
@@Chug_z the last year of IDI had a turbo model 9th month+ 1993 to 1994.5 had a turbo option from factory no others did ( anything above 1994.5 was a first gen 7.3 power stroke ) and even the ones with the turbo option you barely heard the turbo straight pipe them and you still got that good low tone exhaust note just a bit muffled from the turbo but not a whole lot.
My buddy did that exact thing in his FC RX-7 after changing the oil. Thank god it didn’t start, as it would the 13B would’ve revved to 4000 rpm in first gear, and ran right into three techs and a toolbox.

How did you run your exhaust and what size did you use? I see you have a cab and chassis truck and I do too. It is pretty tight between the tank and rear tires
it is an IDI my friend, in that year they did not come with a turbo and everything was mechanical. i have one that i am going to put together and it is a very simple engine
Idk why you kids think a Cold Start means it has to be cold outside, “Cold Start” means starting an engine that isn’t at running temp, an engine that is at the same temp as it’s surrounding environment is a “cold engine”
Dumb question but is it a stock 7.3? It may just be me but it almost has the raspiness of a cammed engine. Also what exhaust did you put on it? I’ve got an 89 that I’d love to make sound like this.
@@redneck6331 check for air in the lines seriously I didnt see to much of a issue of the glow plugs being the issue sounded to me like you got air intrusion check your injector return caps for seapage also block the line going from your fuel filtration head to the injector just below it plug them both off not needed if you have any leaks what so ever it will drain the fuel out of the filter head making for the engine to do exactly what it was doing.
It should start alot better, try looking at fuel filter, there's an o ring on the top of it that harden up and cause fuel to drain back to tank making it hard to start. I think its an fuel heater. I replaced o ring, starts like new
Also , just a thought, when my truck started, I'd lose back yard with smoke but engine got to temp, no smoke, got my hands on a rebuilt injection pump and injectors, when i start in very cold weather, little to no smoke.
In my builds of IDI. I use an electronic helper pump after the mechanical pump, it helps prime the injection system without turning over the engine. With that powered up only a couple cranks to fire. No Matter how long the trucks been sitting.
