- Today i am showing you how i replaced the voltage regulator on my 2009 bmw 135i with the N54 engine. Very simple fix and can solve lots of electrical issues. Save money by replacing just the regulator instead of a new alternator.

Cheap fix thanks, solved my voltage stability issue.
I thought I was the the only one who rebuilt my alternators without removing them drom the car. I just by the brushes for $5 and replace them.
The voltage regulators nowadays hardly ever go out. The diodes go out first. But great job anyway, you just gave my trade secret away.
The problem is this is a BMW. My friends 2012 528i with 100K is outputting 17v! Never seen that in any other car.
What are the symptoms when the diodes go?
@@drew2540 alternators generate AC output not DC the diodes turn the AC into DC so when they go out you'll end up with straight AC coming out of the alternator the same kind of current as in a house. The regulator simply takes the DC voltage and reduces it from around 80 volts down to 14.6v
How do you replace the brushes and where do you buy them from ?
Yes how @@claudiochairez8995
True that , some cars have a valeo 180 amp , and that has its own specific voltage regulator
Did you have to disconnect the negative battery terminal too?
The beginning had me in tears 😂 (explosion) part
good afternoon BMW E70 35dx 2011 at first the left headlight blinked and there was an error about the generator failure, replaced it with a new one and after 2 weeks there were 5 errors on the left headlight and 2 errors 4A67 Power Management Vehicle Electrical System and BMW 4660 Power supply unit, after these errors the car through it stops for a while and to start you have to remove the key and insert it again, the error appears mainly on the road or when I stand for a long time at low revs, I check if everything is in order, the alternator gives 14.8 volts, but the errors say that gives 17 volts, where to look and what can be
I have a bmw2006 325i could a bad one cause your distribution box and positive thermal to surge
What’s the function of the air filter on the valve cover ? Or is it just aesthetic
Can the voltage regulator cause no crank no start
🔥🔥🔥
Can this cause a positive terminal to overheat
My 2009 bmw 328xi has air intake duct blocking my hands to take off the black cover for accessibility need help 😭
Mine e90 328xi just stepped over 210k km and this part went out, seems like a lower brush gives up faster than the top one. So if you getting weird voltages like 11 -13v, it's most likely that the top brush trying to compensate for the lower one.. :/ after replacing battery i'm getting 14+v. I've noticed overcharging error and 15v coming from alternator, but not each time. So you have to track for couple of days or best is to use a secret menu and track voltage while driving :)
I have a 2010 328i xdrive hit 210k miles, now it’s almost 211k miles. Going strong 💪🏼
Iam so pissed i have 4a07 code and was searching for a solution. I start this video and when u dropped regulator i bursted out laughing.
😂 good to know. Thanks 🙏
I have a 2008 bmw 335i e92 and I was wondering if this is going to fix my issue when I was driving my heater stopped working then the doors wouldn’t lock then after all that the trunk would not open the alarm and everything works the doors themselves do not lock tho I was thinking this would be my issue the door lock button and trunk button inside do not work so I have to use the key itself
Your issue is likely the FRM module (driver footwell module) starting to fail. It controls the windows, heating/cooling, interior/exterior lights and some more stuff. It is covered under a 15 year, 300k warranty/recall and is a known issue and is a free repair at the dealership. Give your local BMW dealership and see if you still make the cut since yours is a 2008. I just had this exact problem on my e91
Hey great vid. ever have a smoking issue ? And can’t figure it out ? I have an 08 N54 .. thinkin turbos
Probably valve cover gasket leaking to turbos
Im trying to figure out a sudden no crank no start on my 08 328i. Power thru out the cart but nothing when I press start. Anyone have any ideas code just read low voltage
Can this be done on the bmw e92 335d? Surley it’s got to be the same set up? Looks different through
Probably can
My new battery keeps dying and now I have all these random lights/codes on my dash, idk if I should replace the regulator or the alternator
Yes, do
Can this cause 4x4 light? Or abs brake lights?
Lots of electrical issues when voltage is not within specifications
What constitutes over charge? My alt is putting 14.5v to battery
Yes thats normal
How do you determine the alternator amps? To buy the correct voltage regulator?
I've never seen anyone replace such a part on an alternator. Can you please provide legitimate benefits for installing a baffled oil fill cap? For crank case pressue release?
You can google benefits of the the oil fil cap that’s baffled and it’s benefits or having a external catch can. Only necessary when raising boost
Where you located
How many miles did that alternator have on it, for reference ?
Has 130k miles
@@menjicar I appreciate it, good to know
How would you know what amp is your alternator????
I have no clue. But all I know is you can replace the voltage regulator that wears out
You open your hood and check if you have the Bosch or the Valeo alternator.
@@SDE90 it Bosch alternator
I have a 2011 528i BMW anyone know if mine is located in the same place?
That's definitely not something I would have thought of, but I'm at over 160K miles, so mine could probably use a refresh (never had my alternator replaced).
Yeah give it a shot. Just for peace of mind. Mine was worn out a lot as you can see
@@menjicar I have a 325CI 2001 is it the same
If not where can I order mine ?
@@gaz.7887 I’m actually not sure about that. I use FCP EURO put in your car’s information and see if you can order one. If you can and looks the same, it should be replaceable
I'm doing this project this week. My car started acting up with lots of random electrical warnings. When the regulator goes bad it can send high voltages. Mine has started sending 15 to 17 volts which can damage the battery or other modules in the car. I ordered from FCPEuro.
@@FSX239 good 👍 I ordered mine from FCP too. No issues
Safe to just disconnect negative battery terminal before doing the work?
Yes
Absolutely I did this right before replacing my loud alternator
@@caliberaid8527 ended up doing mine a few weeks ago. The regulator wasn’t coming out without a fight so I ended up replacing the alternator. Pretty easy job as long as you have the tools
Good video but that explosion thing in the beginning is obnoxious hehe. Also, always good to state make, year and especially miles.
Explosion was a must. 2009 bmw 135i with 150k miles
@@menjicarThat shit was funny as hell
Everyone making CZcams video’s about this Confusing everyone because this bosh part number is NOT compatible with a Valeo Brand Alternator Another OEM part that is made For BMW & not all 3 series are equipped with a bosh brand alternator!! SMH 🤦♂️
So tired of the clickbait...came here to see what issues it fixed, nothing mentioned
