  • First Indoor Potato Reveal! | April Potatoes in Zone 5? | Guten Yardening Container Gardening
    At the beginning of the winter, we planted our first ever indoor potatoes from potatoes that we harvested this past summer. It was an exciting concept for us to see what growing potatoes indoors would be like, but we weren't sure what to expect.
    This is the first of the potato plants to die back and be ready to harvest. This particular variety is a determinate potato (the norland red), and it is typically considered an early season potato variety, but April in zone 5 is exceptionally early, and only possible because we were able to plant indoors.
    We are really excited to show you the results of this first bag. These potatoes are growing in a 3 gallon grow bag with our own potting mix. Enjoy our first potato reveal of 2021!
    For this harvest, we are also using a table top soil container to keep everything clean indoors.
    Please join us for our first indoor potato (spuds) harvest reveal! Try your hand at growing potatoes in bags!

      I tried growing indoors and it was a pretty good harvest. The only problem I encountered was all of these tiny bugs that seem to come out of nowhere. I googled it and it could have been from too much moisture in the soil. How often should we water, and how much water per watering day? Thank you!

    We enjoyed our winter indoor garden so much that we plan to expand the 'operation' with a large (climate controlled) grow tent in the basement next year. Even with the smalltime setup we had this past winter we were able to grow snap peas, cherry tomatoes, carrots, various herbs and Swiss chard from seed to harvest. Our spinach died off early on, we think from dampening off, and our banana pepper put putted along and is only now getting big enough to think about flowering. We sowed the pepper seed back in early November 2020! Also, as a side effect to the grow lights we strategically placed throughout the house, we really liked how bright it was inside the house, especially when it got really blizzardy outside. It made the cold Michigan winter far more tolerable.

      That is fantastic news! It is really rewarding, and you are so right, it makes the winter so much more bearable to have a garden going on inside. There are some great options out there for grow tents, depending on how much space you have, and so I think you will find one that is a great fit for you. That is a large variety of veggies you had there without the grow tent, so I think you will increase that even more in the future. I imagine your place is bright and fantastic! Thank you so much for the fantastic comment and for watching! I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

      This is our first attempt, and we are really happy with those first results. We have a bunch more to harvest now, including some different varieties, so it will be really interesting, I think, to see how the ones in the grow bed perform vs. those in these bags. Stay tuned. :D

      It was a lot of fun to harvest, and now I am even more excited to see what is in the raised beds and the other grow bag, but we still have some more time to wait on those. :D Thank you so much!

      Thank you so much! I know it is hard to expand with limited space, and for potatoes, you can't really grow up easily, I suppose, but I know you are as creative as they come, and I think you will find ways to increase space. :D

      They get about 14 hours of light, and we keep the room at around 74 degrees. :) You should go for it!

    My Yukon Golds were almost white--like they were bleached. Cooking them revealed a strange texture--inedible. I harvested my Red Pontiacs just yesterday--they looked normal---just small. Had them for supper last night. This was a neat experiment, but I was disappointed. The yields for me were poor (5 or 6 per bag) and they were small. Those were the ones grown under LED lights.
    I have 3 bags that I planted in February that I kept only on the windowsill. I'll be curious to see if they do better.

      @GutenGardening  Před 3 lety

      How interesting. I cut one open after the harvest, and it looked great inside. I also wondered if there would be any texture issues. I would definitely be interested in seeing the result difference between the LED and the window, so when you harvest, please let us know! :)

    • @GutenGardening
      @GutenGardening  Před 3 lety +1

      Thank you so much! We really enjoyed this harvest. As to the fire ants, that is so disheartening! Those are one of those insects that I am so so happy we don't have to deal with up here. I wonder what some of the natural ways of getting rid of them might be?

      @@GutenGardening getting to hills to fight each other to the death is the best, DE can work if they haven't gotten well established, it would be nice if we could order predator wasps which are their natural enemy in Central America 😁

    • @GutenGardening

      How interesting! Do you know how they made their way up from Central America (if that is where the ants are from)?

    • @MinnieAcresFarm
      @MinnieAcresFarm Před 3 lety +1

      I think there has been some migration north over time but I recall a story of fire ants being on boats stowing away in stuff that was traveling here from central or south America and they liked it here so much they quickly and easily established a kingdom, more or less 😂

    • @GutenGardening
      @GutenGardening  Před 3 lety +1

    Is it worth using up fossil fuels to light the indoor potatoes?

    • @almostoily7541
      @almostoily7541 Před 3 měsíci

      It's using less fuel than driving to the supermarket to buy them that have been grown in a different state and shipped to the store.
      The machinery used to plant and harvest commercial potatoes uses fossil fuels. So does the electric for cold storage.
      Don't forget the electricity used to run the register where you pay for purchasing potatoes. Then, the fuel to drive home.
      I'd say he's saved a good amount of fossil fuels by running the light to grow those potatoes compared to buying them.
      But perhaps your criticism may spur him to use solar lights if he isn't already. Solar that has probably been manufactured using electricity in another country and shipped here... using fossil fuels.

    • @tnijoo5109
      @tnijoo5109 Před 3 měsíci

      @@almostoily7541 BS. It’s way more fuel efficient to grow potatoes in larger quantities and there’s videos out there comparing. I’ve looked into it since my comment. Your logic is flawed on this. Your entire argument is just not right. I’m sorry.
