  • Winter Potatoes?! Potato 101 and Growing Potatoes Indoors with Grow Lights | Guten Yardening Winter Urban Gardening
    Some of the potatoes from our massive summer harvest of 200 lbs. have begun to sprout (after five months in our cool basement storage location). This is happening in part because we don’t have a root cellar, though we do plan to do some canning in the near future.
    Because we have these sprouting potatoes, we see this as an opportunity to experiment with indoor potato planting. We have now planted several of our varieties in both and indoor raised bed and in indoor grow bags, and we are already seeing some excellent growth.
    In this video we will talk to you about how to grow potatoes indoors, the process of planting, the medium in which we plant, and the stages of development you can expect from your potatoes. We will also explain the difference between determinate and indeterminate potatoes.
    We plan to use this experiment both as a way to produce a new potato crop and as a way to create new seed potatoes for next season.
    We hope you enjoy this video! Thank you for watching!

      We are on the exact same page as you for sure. Between potatoes and sweet potatoes, it is hard to pick our favorite but I can tell you that there is nothing quite like being able to replant a harvest and knowing that there is going to be another nice harvest as a result. We have purchased a lot of our seed potatoes from a local organic vegetable supplier in the past, and we have been quite happy with those results. :)

      The best kind of gift is the one that keeps on giving. :) Grow bags have been great for us, when we make sure to water well. That was one of the mistakes we made earlier this season. We had a pretty small yield out of some of our summer potatoes. We corrected our watering, and what a difference out of the last set of potatoes we pulled out of our grow bags. :) Thank you for enjoying!

    I was hoping to learn more about how to use grow lights with potatoes. I live in a condo with north-facing windows. One bay window faces east, and then the building blocks the sun after 9:00 AM. Also, it's often overcast where I live.
    My potato stems are growing like crazy (lots of stalk but not a lot of leaves), but there's not enough light for them to work on the potatoes themselves.
    This is my first time trying this. I was hoping to learn more about how to use grow lights with them. I didn't want to spend any money, but maybe $15 would be okay.

  • @UrbanGardeningWithD.A.Hanks14

    Hi there! I've successfully grown white potatoes that I purchased from non-organic spuds at Food Lion. They say they're sprayed with growth inhibitors, but I got a great harvest last year from raised beds. Prior to that, I had grown a few in containers indoors over the winter, and put them out in early spring to get direct sun. Trying supermarket Russets this time too; I have them hiding in the closet over the winter to see if they chit. I guess the pun with getting store bought potatoes to sprout, is chit or miss. :-p

    • @GutenGardening
      @GutenGardening  Před 2 lety +1

      Hahaha! Well-played with that pun. I think it is definitely possible to grow from non-organic potatoes as well. I would think it would likely depend on making sure you got that initial chitting to happen as you said. I would imagine you will get some great potatoes out of those Russets. We have had good success from storebought fingerlings as well, and I highly recommend giving them a try. :D Thank you for sharing!

  • @kriskk4534

    Looks great...I thought keeping the potatoes in the garage or basement until the first leaves show up and/or when the green starts dying. Does the plant need light although no green is visible?
    I also wonder how the potatoes get pollinated? Last: I have organic potatoes, stored over a year in the basement. They have eyes/sprouts/roots, which looks a bit dry. Would you give them a try? Sorry for stupid questions...I am absolute beginner...

    • @GutenGardening
      @GutenGardening  Před 2 lety +1

      Hello Kris! Thank you for the questions, and sorry for the late response. The potatoes will sprout without sunlight, but I would have them in sun or light as quickly as you can. We keep ours growing with a 14 hour light cycle typically. So, the short answer to your question (if no green is visible) they may grow some without light, but the greens won't grow farther without it.
      For the organic potatoes. I would give them a try. We did some growing with some really old fingerling potatoes last season, and they grew. :) The link to that video is here: (if this helps) czcams.com/video/nvVbcRL1tUs/video.html&ab_channel=GutenYardening

    Awesome job PK! Which potatoes have the most and least health benefits?

    • @GutenGardening
      @GutenGardening  Před 3 lety +3

      Thank you so much Mike! Great question. Most of the health in potatoes is determined by how you prepare them, but one of the benefits of growing our own potatoes is that we can be more comfortable when eating the skins, since we know that is where a lot of the nutritional value of the potatoes lies. I would say for overall taste, I love red potatoes. The purple potatoes have more antioxidants, and we have a love for those as well as purple sweet potatoes, but those potatoes can be harder to find. :) We grew some from a bag of organic fingerling potatoes. Quite tasty! I hope all is well with your family!

    Wat timing cycles did u use in ur grow room?
    Do spuds need a veg cycle then a flower cycle?
    Critical points for me.
    Still tryna find the perfect indoor spud method for full heavy crops.
    Please reply.

    • @GutenGardening
      @GutenGardening  Před 3 lety

      Great questions John!
      Our timing cycle has been 14-16 hours lights on. We did not vary the cycle during the flowering/veg phases, primarily because of all of the other vegetables we have growing at the same time, but you make a great point that this make create a difference in production, especially as we think about what that outdoor growing cycle would be like as the months pass toward maturity. This is something we will certainly take into consideration for future plantings. What has been your most successful method so far?

      @@GutenGardening 18hrs lights on and plenty of wind.
      Biggest tip with indoor gardening is stay clean, spray ur plants regular, even every other day. Serious one bug in there and in 3 days uve got 1000s.
      With spuds they do seem to like less light and defo not to much water.
      Still ain't perfected indoor spuds by far but feel it's something that needs cracking and perfecting.
      That film The Martian set me off on indoor spuds, also I'm a prepped, feel to crack indoor spuds to perfection cud make many have plenty of foods.
      I've grown outside spuds as big as rugby balls before and to get spuds that size indoors wud be awesome.
      If u get any good tips on indoor spuds please let me know.
      I'm using HPS lights and now down to 400w metal halide bulbs.
      My rooms 10ft X 10ft and 600w lights made it too warm. Plus I'm gotta use less electric.
      Love HPS lights bcuz of their heat, one bulb can keep my whole bungalow warm so not heating bills. Bills for grow lights do even out, I have Tele on less now cuz I'd soon see foods growing.
      Love a growroom wen it's like a jungle me, no better place to sit.
