Huge 42kg Potato Harvest!(MY BEST & BIGGEST POTATOES YET!) - 120 Days

- Hi everyone! It's finally time! For my first 2023 Winter potato crop reveal! 😃🥔
My biggest & best potato harvest to date! I harvested a total of 42KG/92LBS from 31 potato plants!(1.3KG average per plant!) 🤩 Plus also grew 2 MONSTER potatoes! A Royal Blue at 0.849KG/1.871LBS & a Pontiac at 0.740KG/1.631LBS! Wow!!! 😃🤩😍
These have been growing for 120 days, which is the longest any of my potatoes have ever lived for(some died off between 90-110 days tho) & i was lucky July(middle of Winter in Australia) didn't give me any hard frost, although we had random semi-hard frost for a few days in June which is not normal! A few of the potatoes in the right side of the yard(garden beds) got hit with a little frost damage, but the rest were unaffected and i was able to protect them for the remaining frosty June days with some newly bought frost covers, phew! 😅 I'm extremely happy with this harvest(If i don't seem like it on video, i'm still shy to speak, your boy still gotta get used to it 😂) i think i can finally join the big league of potato growers on CZcams now, haha! 😂😃
Varieties i planted: King Edward, Salad Rose, Royal Blue, Sapphire, Ruby Lou, Pontiac & White Star!
So there was a few things that was gonna change after this harvest was,
1: If the Sapphire was gonna perform poorly(1 did but it had an issue) i would stop growing it despite it being a unique dark purple/black potato with purple flesh, but 1 plant produced 2kg which shows it's capable of competing/matching with the rest of the high yielding varieties! 😂🙂
2: Although Ruby Lou(store-bought potato) did well for my 'How to grow potatoes video', it has a history of producing poorly for me, so it was 50/50 for me & if it was to produce poorly again at 120 days, i might of let it go, but it seems it produced some pretty large potatoes! 😮😃
So both varieties are staying 😂👍
But wait! It's not over yet for my 2023 Winter potato crops, i still have 2 remaining plants, my big Pontiac in a large mulch bag & my big King Edward in the square garden bed! 🙂 These 2 will have their own harvest video, i'm hoping they can make it to 150 days & that i can possible get a yield of 4kg from both of them, it is possible since they're my largest & now longest living plants, haha! 😃
My other upcoming potato harvests for 2023 will be:
🥔 Delaware(should be ready in 30-60 days, currently 60 days old!)
🥔 1 large pot with, Red Rascal, Ruby Lou, Royal Blue(& 2 others but idk if they will establish properly anymore at this point 😂) Will be ready in 60-90 days(About to be 30 days old!)
🥔 Sebago, which should be ready in 60-70 days once they sprout next week(for my soil comparison videos!)
🥔 Pink Eye, which will probably be in the ground this week or the next! Also a 1st early like Sebago, so that will only take 60-70+ days!
That should be it for the potatoes in 2023, i think it will be too late for any of these to sprout in time to plant in 2023, so they will go in the ground for 2024! 🙂

Holy cow those are huge potatoes. Gigantic. So fun to watch I been going ohhhh ahhhh😅😅
😂 Glad you enjoyed the harvest!
I don't garden but I want to. Does anyone else become mesmerized by potato harvests? I am addicted to watching them the hunt in the dirt and uncovering hidden treasure is fascinating. Thank you for filming congrats on the harvest!
Gardening is pretty fun! especially growing varieties you don't usually see at the store! Glad you enjoyed the harvest & thank you!
I love sweet potatoes my birthmark!
Magical hands, wow!
Thank you so much for sharing and not speeding up the camera. I enjoyed every second of it. The best harvest I've seen this year. Great job.
Glad you enjoyed! & thank you!
But he did speed up the camera in spots.
So Very good harvest❤
Thank you! 😊
After looking at your harvest. I noticed there’s no vine or stem connecting the potatoes together. That’s crazy cool. I have never planted potatoes but I’m excited to do it this yr bc of your vid.😊
Oh! Yeah usually if they've got a good grip in the ground they don't pull up when you pull the plant out 😂 I do have another video where i dug around the bag & kept most of the potatoes connected to the plant! czcams.com/video/hAsrToZjrF0/video.html just the first plant, but yeah it's very exciting harvesting potatoes! It does take a lot of patience since you don't see anything underground & the plant stops growing after flowering, but if you get a good harvest it is worth the wait, like digging for treasure 😂🥔
Harvest from the first pot is my favorite part. The colors look amazing! Thank you for sharing the joy of harvesting potatoes through your videos.
Right! Different coloured varieties is always a treat 😍 and thank you! Glad you enjoyed the harvest!
Your harvest was amazing. I will plant potatoes in the Spring for my first time ever and would appreciate any advise you can share with me. I live in North Arkansas. Thank you,
Thank you! Ohh first time growing potatoes! 😃 Make sure to mulch around your potato plants to prevent sun exposure(green on potatoes is toxic to consume) & once flower buds appear(they may bloom or fall off) switch fertilizers that doesn't contain nitrogen anymore! And always wait for the plants foliage to start yellowing/dying off, that way you know they've grown as big as they can & they can store well 🙂
What brilliant harvest of potatoes the sizes were really good, well done. Have a brilliant week, Tracy 😊
Thank you! Hope you have a good week too!
OMGOSH you got so many potatoes!!! And so many big ones! 😮 GOALS. 😂❤
😂😂 Thank you!
Wow. Looks like they did even better in the containers. Love your soil mix. Spuds coming out clean always a good sign. Great work.
Thank you!
Love it when you talk thru your videos. Beautiful!
Thank you!
That was such a great harvest those was some huge potatoes.
Thank you!
Very nice harvest! Thanks for filming! The white spots are not sprouts, but where the skins are thin with large influx of water or rain, think of it as a break thru, fast growth. Home grown veg. did the homework on that, that"s the only reason I know that.
Thank you! Oh! i'm aware of swollen lenticels, but on the giant there was a sprout 😂 pause at 2:04 !
Wonderful harvest thanks for Sharing I enjoy your video.
Thank you & glad you enjoyed it!
Beautiful harvest.
Thank you!
Wow!
That's an amazing harvest!
Thank you!
Awesome.
Thanks!
Rize, in the UK King Edward's are regarded as a red potato ♥️
Oh interesting!
brilliant harvest , especially the salad rose which is becoming out favourite here for growing in pots , we'll be trying white star this year as well but still getting frosts here and more predicted in the coming week , we love you videos , but may we ask how you store them ?
Thank you! Yeah Salad Rose is top notch, it will always have a place in my yard 🥔 Hope the White Stars do well for you mate! they've been proving consistent good yielder. Usually i wash all my potatoes & after they've dried for the whole day, just store them in a large container with ventilation then use a black/dark cloth to line/cover the inside & the top(if open) to block out light, then placed in the kitchen or laundry room depending on space. This is the first time i harvested so many in 1 go, when i do harvest over 10kg, i just let the dirt dry completely and do the same type of storage as the washed ones, but this time i stored the excess in a large cardboard box under the open shed/roof & see how that goes! I might post some pics on the community posts! But yeah that's what i usually do, also half goes out to friends and family so i only get to store half the amount i harvests 😂
Sweet potatoes are different, but if it helps, when i had to store 18kg i just had them in a large tub with just a cloth on top & they were good till they were all eaten, all dried for the whole day before placing them in
Congratulations on a great harvest and thank you for sharing! What did you use for hilling the potatoes? Thank you
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the harvest! I didn't hill the potatoes in the garden bed, I just mixed in new compost before planting, what I used to Hill my potted potatoes was new and home made compost 🙂
@@rizesgardening Thank you for responding! I have potatoes in ground growing first time. I just put them in the ground? They have been there about two months and have green with leaves about 12 inches out of the ground? Should I do something to help them grow?
Thank you again!
@@cherylbeaudoin1461 How deep did you plant them? If they're deep enough(i don't measure but let's say 4-5inches) you won't need to hill, but if some start popping out of the ground, a bit of hilling & mulch will protect the potatoes from turning green, which is toxic!
After a month & a half they should stop growing or at least slow down with foliage, at this point they're growing the tubers, so just feed it potassium fertilizer & keep the watering consistent!
@@rizesgardening thank you again. I planted them about5 inches apart. I didn't add anything but water and them in the soil? I should look at home depot for potassium fertilizer? And I read somewhere on google that when the start leaves growing not to water as much? and in Florida it rains so I try not to over water yet for onions they need more water.learning. I htink the potatos willgrowunder the tarp that I pur the starter potatoes under? And I let the green stems with leaves poke up thorugh holes of hte landscape fabric?
@@cherylbeaudoin1461 If your soil is rich with organic matter/compost, it isn't necessary, but the potash feed will help give them a bit more size! Correct, when they are just starting to grow out, you don't have to water much but once a month has passed(since sprouting out the ground) or when the flowers appear, start to water more regularly! They'll grow under the tarp once conditions are right or they're ready to sprout, it should be okay but don't leave them there for too long and plant them out like the landscape fabric with holes!
What do you put into your soil to get those huge potatoes?😮
I just added new compost and homemade compost! 😂🙂 For the ones I bought one is good quality premium compost & the other is mushroom compost, hope that helps!
I’m curious 👀
I started true potato seeds in peat pots
I usually just put the little pots straight in the ground after this evening is mature enough, but this is my first time with true potato seeds and I’m wondering if the root system will come out of the pot like the other plants do?
Ooh, i think it should be able to, if the stolons aren't able to penetrate through the peat pot, when the potatoes start to swell then it sure will break through the peat pot 😂
@@rizesgardening 😂 I was like ummm 🧐 😆 should I just plop it out when transplanted or just leave the tiny peat pot 😩 😂 new gardener problems
@@Pinkpumpkingardener 😂 Yes that would probably be better, i have heard peat pots actually take a while to actually break down which can hinder some root growth depending on the plant, so transplanting out would be the best option!
@@rizesgardening thank you soooo much !!!
First time trying potatoes in general
But trying many different ways
I did the seeded potatoes already, and I did them in the ground and in a compost bag like I’ve seen people trying to do! And then I have these true potato seeds, so when they germinate, I’m just gonna take them out of peat pots
Because I’m using those for the cardboard boxes, and barrels
❤️
Let’s see how it goes! 😆
Ps my sons middle name is Ryz
Idk if you guys pronounce the same
