Why Apple Removed The MacBook's Touch Bar

  • In 2016 Apple introduced new MacBook Pro models that featured the Touch Bar. A narrow touch-sensitive glass display at the top of the keyboard. Apple promised it would offer intuitive new ways to interact with content. But with their latest MacBook Pro release, the Touch Bar was removed. And there are a few reasons for this.

    • @Leo-sd3jt

@@GeorgeVenturi Having the touchbar remove existing keys removed functionality. It would've been more futuristic as an extra bar over the function/media keys or at the bottom of the screen. Apple "borrowed" the design from Lenovo's X1 Carbon Gen2 laptops which came out in 2014. However it looks like Apple failed to notice the massive failure of that design as Lenovo reverted away from that design in 2015 with the X1 Carbon Gen3 laptops. They could've improved greatly upon the design but instead they followed in the same mistaken footsteps as Lenovo but, unlike Lenovo, it took Apple years to admit their mistake. I predict that we will see the return of the touchbar as an extra row now that Apple seems to be actually listening to the demands and desires of their customers.

There are like a million uses for the Touch Bar especially people that watch things like shorts, TikTok, Instagram or Ads. You can literally fast forward or rewind any kind of video. Why I loved the Touch Bar:
    > More customisability
    > Shortcuts in supported programs
    > I always use the touch bar to pick emojis
    > PET GAMES
    > I love the feel of adjusting volume and brightness
    > It’s silent
    > Scrubbing through videos without using the popup, which is way faster and aesthetically pleasing (used it a lot for watching reference videos as an animator)
    > Skipping ads on CZcams
I rarely use the function keys (I have a separate Magic Keyboard with Touch ID) so I am reluctant to upgrade to the newer MacBook Pro.
I think the touch bar was honestly the best feature on the MacBook Pro as compared to other laptops.

The point of the Touch Bar was to provide custom in app shortcut keys and custom keyboard function keys.
3rd party App developers never funded Touch Bar integration and Apple never funded Touch Bar integration so it basically failed.
The Touch Bar could have been great but no one wanted to fund (custom software implementation / user ease of use) to make it work.

(For me at least) it takes the function of a basic soundboard without any connections or additional purchases which suits my studio in a lovely way. Also helpful when using two displays and as long as I have no hardware issues with it, it’ll continue to be my favorite part of my Mac. Literally bought an older model just for the feature. I had a 2019 MBP with Touch Bar for work. I never got used to it in the two years I’ve had it. Pulling off certain keyboard shortcuts relies on muscle memory and sensory feedback. I was never sure if a button got pressed on the bar without looking down, and that had always been frustrating.
The bar then suffered hardware faults just over two years of use. The device itself had serious heating issues around the component, it’s what happens with powerful Intel chips and a laptop too thin for proper ventilation.

Most of its uses are pretty pointless even with things like music production. A 2-inch slider is not precise enough to be used correctly. Even things like the emoji keyboard are pretty pointless. It is a good idea, you can essentially add an infinite amount of keys to a keyboard, but apple didn’t really do anything with it to make it worth it. They kinda just added it to charge you more money or to get you to come into the store if it breaks.

  • @PeteNicholsonAnimation

I had a Touch Bar 16" MacBook Pro through my previous job and a few things struck me:
When using my laptop, I was in the "keyboard and mouse" mindset. There was very limited value in using the Touch Bar to adjusting controls that were already on screen, when all my other interaction with the GUI was via the trackpad.
When adjusting volume or screen brightness, I found the touch bar worse because the controls I needed were several taps away.
The touch bar's lack of force sensitivity and haptic feedback meant you had to look at it all the time for precise adjustments, there was no "near enough is good enough" like there is with keyboard keys, and there was a small risk of accidental input.

It's a shame they removed the Touch Bar and reserved it for the MacBook Pro only - I would have loved to have it on my MacBook Air, I really like the Touch Bar.

I’ll definitely agree with Apple. As someone who primarily uses his MacBook Pro 2017 for running Pro Tools, an app that has no Touch Bar support, I agree it was a mistake.

I personally like the touch bar. Apple please bring back touch bar. It is very useful for Autocorrect or Autocomplete, It helps me to make my mike to go on mute w/o using mouse or trackpad and many more such features

Honestly, I think people would’ve appreciated the Touchbar more if it had vibration feedback to simulate a button. It’s not a big deal for obvious reasons on a phone, but on a screen that is facing upwards, your face is TOWARDS the main display in front of you. You had to look down at the Touchbar to make sure you were pressing the right buttons which made it frustrating to use without having any feedback.

What is the need for physical function keys which are barely used? I never used the top row till I got the touchbar

For the everyday users, they won’t remember what shortcuts are on the touchbar since the options change per application. Just a very convoluted idea unless you use the same applications everyday. While the function key still requires you to remember what you snapped to that key, it’s the same key stoke for every shortcut and doesn’t require you to look at the touchbar to make sure you press the correct one.

I am a programmer and have a touchbar on my 13” Pro. I wouldn’t say it is essential but I definitely prefer that over regular F keys that barely ever get used. Some shortcuts that are pretty useful is when in text editing apps you can easily switch from bold to regular or change text color without touching your mouse or trackpad, running code in VS studio and Xcode, etc.
Definitely would be nice to have an option to opt for the bar.

During the past few weeks, the right side of the touch bar flickers when my mid-2020 MacBook Pro gets too cold. I asked an Apple Store employee about that. She said it would be too expensive to fix. Guess I'll have to put up with that annoyance until I upgrade to a newer Mac.

I personally feel this is a feature better utilized for everyday users, ppl who are more likely to buy a Mac air than a pro.
I finally got reacquainted with mac os with a refurbished 2019 model and I love the bar. Makes the laptop feel special and many simple functions feel more intuitive.
