  • To clarify this is a permanent fix in such that even a new case or sleeving the case will wear out in time same as the o-rings on these modified servos. The o-rings are also available separately.

    Thank you for the great info on this transmission repair. I am a independent repair technician w 20 + years experience. I look everywhere for information to repair cars. I used this repair on my neighbors Explorer. Worked perfectly. He had went to transmission repair shop and was quoted a very expensive transmission rebuild estimate. I did some online research and came across this repair and recommended to give it an attempt before pulling the plug on the explorer. He drove the explorer for several months before selling the vehicle and as far as I know its still going strong.

    I have used this product myself on a coworkers explorer....its been not quite 4 years 60k miles and still shifting strong with no problems....If you plan on installing the kit yourself you can make it a lot easier by cleaning and soaking the snap rings a few days before the doing the job. I also opted to get both modified snap rings and pliers with the kit. It was well worth the extra money considering how much easier it makes the job and the money you will save by not replacing the trans.....I wish they made the same kit for my ford focus....

    Amazing how things never change. In the early 80's when I was still an early teen, my Dad made quite a bit of extra money on the weekends fixing Ford C4 automatics with intermediate band failures. One of the improvements he made back then was to machine a couple o'ring grooves in the servo piston rod to stop the leakage past the worn out bore. Those usually started to fail at around 35,000 to 40,000 miles and was most common after Ford switched from Type F fluid to the original MERCON fluid, which I believe was no different than the GM Dexron fluid of that time.

    • @CarMaintenanceGuy
      @CarMaintenanceGuy Před 4 lety +2

      That's why I NEVER, EVER keep MERCON or Dexron in any vehicle. I always use Amsoil ATF and have ZERO problems in any vehicle I've ever owned. I don't whine about how expensive Amsoil is. I just put it in and forget about it.

    @alb12345672 Před 7 lety +10

    A trans builder told me that this problem is because Fords 5 speed trans was actually derived from a 4 speed trans. 95-96 Explorers had a 4R55E transmission. By using additional combinations of bands they were able to create 5 speeds, and probably gained .2 mpg per vehicle for CAFE. The problems is you are working parts now twice as hard. By 100K you already have 200K wear on that bore. Not that the 4R55Es are perfect, but they will generally last longer. These transmissions have their heritage in the Pinto. Also, those servos sit right near the cats and the seals get cooked too.

    Based on my vast research on this issue, the cheapest and easiest preventative measure (before it fails) is, to take the two servos out and break down the SHARP edges on the servo shaft/pin where the grove is. The edges act like a knife to the Aluminum block. Either use a lathe or a small dremmel. I just want to share the idea, and the main credit goes to @Danny Treplet!

    Let me start by saying "Thank You" You have no idea how many times I have relied on your videos or advice you give, on Ford vehicles! I will try to keep this brief. My son has 02 Explorer. He works at Oriellys & hes 20 yrs old. (Point being:he don't make a lot of $$)His vehicle has started all the signs of a typical 5r55w, OD light flashing & very erratic shifting of gears. (Sometimes not shifting) I am your typical backyard mechanic. I've worked on cars my whole life. There is nothing I haven't worked on over the years. My intent in regards to my Sons Explorer, is to go to my local junk yard this weekend. Take a similar tranny out of another Explorer, & then doing the servo bore repair, adjust the bands & anything else needed to make a good tranny. My question is, once I'm at the junk yard & looking to remove the trans, what would be some good things to look for or NOT look for on the replacement? I don't want to pull one that ends up needing more attention that what I already planned! I'm pretty sure that I could remove the pan from the trans to inspect it, before I remove it. There's an abundant amount of Explorers to chose from!

Luckily they were all covered under warranty but having you car in the shop so often when it is brand new is not the way to go. I experienced these problems within 3 months of taking the car off the lot.

  • @TriodeLuvr
    @TriodeLuvr Před 7 lety +1

    My '07 EB Explorer has developed an odd shifting problem that's very intermittent. There are two symptoms. First, it flares on the 2-3 shift. Second, cruising at 55-60 MPH, the engine will suddenly freewheel as though the transmission has disengaged. It acts like it's in Neutral, and the vehicle gradually slows down.
    The vehicle can sometimes be driven for an hour or more, and neither of these symptoms will occur. In fact, we just had the throttle body replaced (a mis-diagnosis of this problem), and the mechanic drove it 45 minutes afterward without an issue. The problem also doesn't seem to be related to temperature. Sometimes it does it from a cold start, sometimes after it gets hot. There's just no pattern to when or where it fails.
    The first time this happened, the "wrench" symbol lit on the dash. My wife pulled over, let it sit about 20 minutes, and it drove fine after that (15 miles home). No codes ever show up when this problem occurs.
    Does any of this sound like a familiar problem?

    Ford should have used a reinforced rubber seal on that rod where it slides into the case bore. That way, the seal eventually wears instead of the case. You can pull the servo with the transmission still in the car and replace the seal on the rod or the rod assembly complete with seal.

I also have a touch of vertigo, which also precludes laying on the pavement while I work on the car. So I'm wondering given that a lot more money could be made replacing the transmission if a mechanic would want to do this repair?

    I got an issue of missing due to lose fish of current coil which I fixed but now is making the gear issue. I check the shifter cable also and it is perfectly fine.
    I check the PCM and it’s giving the Pressure solenoid C open circuit. While this error was before also.
    Replacing a solenoid kit will cost the same of replacing the gear in my location.
    What do I need to do will this go by recalibrating the gear as it happened after the engine misfires.

I believe it shifts normally from 3rd on out. Sometimes if I'm accelerating hard it will shift from 2nd to 3rd at a higher than normal RPM and shift firmly as if it has a shift kit installed. Now sadly the transmission will shift into all of the gears, but will only actually drive in 1st and 2nd gear. Reverse & drive/ overdrive acts like no power however it tries... could the servos be our problem???
    One more question the repair kit has two servos and the chamfer tool but the video did not mention how to use the chamfer tool? thanks for your video and information very helpful.

      The problem isn't engineers it comes down to marketing. Coming from a family of engineers they want stuff to last but that becomes too expensive so ford makes them cut corners to save money. Then stuff like this happens

    I have a 2001 sport trac 5r55e. I changed the transmission 3x in 2 years. I just found out about the servo bores. I took an old servo and cut 2 rings on both sides to install o-rings. I pray this fixes it- then I am selling it. Ford has been turning out nothing but garbage and getting worse. Today, we have a new F150 in the shop with a battery management system. It is ridiculous, it shuts off power to windows, no ac, radio flashes message "charge your battery", also has a reset procedure if you install a new battery. Why!!! (mind blown!)

Things are a lot better but it still is a little heavy on all the changes depending on conditions but what I would like to ask is it has a slow take up in 1st and reverse. Any ideas on what would need fixing to solve this problem. Thank Bob

      If it's a 4R series they work. As the issue is the OD servo bore gets bored out from years of use. The kit fixes the chatter from 3rd to OD. There is also new upgraded Fluid Ford sells to stop the issue to start with. If you lookup Sonnax website. It has trouble shooting help tabs. Which helps you buy the right kit...
      If you do this in the vehicle. You need a roller to hold the band in place or the servo pin can miss it. Then you get nothing. Some issues are internal. You will need to take it out. Just all depends if you service it like the manual tells you...

    I had my OD servo cover partially pop off and snap ring was partially holding. I cleaned the groove for the snap ring and installed a new snap ring. I lubricated the o-rings and reinstalled the servo cover back in place. After all that work it blew out again in 5 minutes. I'm wondering if the fix in this video will fix my problem. Is the problem that mentioned in this video the reason my servo cover is popping off in the first place. Is the oil getting past the shaft of the servo causing too much pressure on the cover? I don't want to put any more time and money into this crappy transmission.

I had the codes read and it came back with a P0745 just as the commenter Jackson Cruz asked below in the comments. Could this be a Servo issue or a faulty solenoid pack? Hi FordTechMakuloco, I Bought an explorer Eddie Bauer 2007 V8 4x4 with 170.000 Kms, like a month after that, my truck starts to present problems like a punch when it passes from third to fourth drive and take a while to get reverse (only in the morning). I went to a place where "an expert" diagnostic that I had problems with solenoid (from third to fourth drive). Few weeks after that my truck takes a long time to get reverse (only in the morning). Now I'm seeing sometimes a yellow tool in my board at morning usually it appears when my truck is trying to go from second to the third drive, I need to drive for a few miles, stop turn off and turn on my truck to solve the problem, after that, my truck get reverse without problems, also if I try to get reverse in the morning I can wait for 15-20 minutes until it gets reverse.
    In some websites, I read that I need to change my transmission oil, in others that I need to replace my master kit, solenoids oil. But I'm not sure that what I need to do.
    Can you help me, please?
