  • Finally got enough snow to try out the new Woodmaxx snowblower. Worked great, just have to add more weight to the front of the Kubota.

    I'm so happy for you. It's great news that you have a good machine that's going to make the whole job easier. Retirement isn't for working harder. That was a great idea for the snow shield on the back, I'm glad that worked too. Be safe, be happy. Thanks for sharing.

      That would be a easy way to stay dry. Just use a material like this lexan that won't shatter if something impacts it. That's what CZcams is all about.

    Snowmaggedon, in the snowbelt! Dang! I have to say, I am impressed with that gizmo, son of a gun, I'm over in Mass. and we got about the same kind of slop that you have in Western N.Y., that PTO snow thrower is like a hot knife through butter, that is a really decent piece of machinery. I can only say "wow". Outstanding.

    I almost bought a Woodmax for my Kubota but I noticed how much more they weighed than other brands so I knew I would have a hard time keeping the front end on the ground! Even with the land pride I need 150lbs on the front. The wood max does seem to be the best built out there!

    • @unemployedredneckhillbilly2023
      @unemployedredneckhillbilly2023  Před 3 lety +1

      This is perfect for my BX. I added some cast iron weight lifting weights to the front in another video and it's well balanced now. Guy up the street had one of the lighter ones and after seing how mine throws snow he replaced it with a Woodmaxx. Another friend bought a 6 ft one to replace his Woods blower that was junk. I think this will outlast me without problems. Thanks for watching.

    My Kubota BX2360 is set up with a 5 foot rear snow blower and a front end loader. The front end loader will not only provide ballast, but is useful in moving large piles of snow around and scraping the driveway down to bare gravel with the float or by back dragging the loader. I switch back and forth between the blower and the loader all the time. The loader can be removed for mowing in the summer, but I keep mine on. You never know when it will come in handy, and while costly, is a good long term investment in the tractor (for resale) even though you have another tractor with a loader. You will love blowing thru large snow drifts with that unit. Was wondering about the glass shield you installed, if you may need a wiper to keep it clear for good visibility to the rear. I really enjoy all your videos. Thank you.

    • @unemployedredneckhillbilly2023
      @unemployedredneckhillbilly2023  Před 5 lety

      I have a loader on the Deere and the Kubota was just my lawn mower up to now. When I replace the Kubota in the future I may do as you say and get a loader for the new tractor along with selling the Deere. For now it will just be more weight. The 4 ft is just right for my needs and it fits anywhere the walk behind would. The shield stayed clear in the center so I think it will be ok but still have to try it in different types of snow to be sure. Thanks for watching.

    I can remember shoveling snow. Not fun at all. This looks much better.
    My father did have a walk behind blower that I used one time. After I spent 2 hours giving it a clean-up and tune-up. (Dad never was very good at this.) Eventually, he hired out this chore as he got too old to do it. At 75 his dementia was quite severe and that was when I used to go up and spend time with him and my step-mother. She only did things in the house. She would pick the blackberries and raspberries I planted for her. She loved to make jams and jellies and they were great! By the way. it seems to me that you should be able to rewire that remote so it doesn't shut off. Just a thought. Nice video. Thanks for sharing.

    On my snowblower I put an A TV winch to rotate the chute. I wired it to the battery with a 50 amp circuit breaker. Then I secured the winch wire controler in the rear and that way I can adjust the direction while I am snowblowing. For the chute curl I installed a small e-bay electric cylinder with a two way back to neutral switch. I like your snowblower as it look like swallowing the snow better than mine. 👍

    Man that little tractor works good. Heavy snow is hard to blow. I have a Kubota L4740. I do a lot of gravel driveways so to save the blower I just feather the blower up about 4 inches then on the way back out I drop the loader with a plow. I bought a new snow plow that trips. I got sick of hitting frozen rocks with the bucket and bending stuff up. The plow trips so avoids that terrible impact I get when I hit a rock with the bucket.
    Yep... your tractor needs a bit of weight in the front but it did very well without chains and only 80 pounds on the front so with the weight you would have a real little monster. Nice little machine. Thanks for sharing your movie.

    Living in the mountains of British Columbia I put chains on all fours , snow blade on front and snow blower on back and I am ready for
    snow. My Kubota just churns turn what ever snow we get which can be considerable some years. put chains on all wheels if not a loader
    ,hunt around for some real tractor weights they are made to hang off the front bar on most makes of tractors. check out some farm supply stores or look for some used they will be much better .

    That looks like a snowblowing beast! Hope it serves you well. Being in the market for a snow blower, I would have loved to have seen the comments and viewer theories (at least the constructive ones) regarding the troubles with your Ariens. I can only assume that a lot of negativity ensues when one refers to a popular brand as junk, lol, so I def understand why you turned off the comments...but still...

    • @unemployedredneckhillbilly2023
      @unemployedredneckhillbilly2023  Před 4 lety +1

      That Ariens was totally unusable junk for over 8 inches. My old 1960s one it replaced was a easier to use better working machine. The main problems seemed to come from them moving the wheels forward causing riding up and autoturn cogging from side to side. plus water melting dripped on the belts and disc causing slippage anytime it was used off level. Tech support said it was not the right machine
      for me with gravel and hill so it basically was a flat blacktop driveway rated machine. Too old to fight with junk machines so dumped it and got this. It's over kill but does what it is supposed to without a fight. There are some nasty keyboard warriors on CZcams. Thanks for watching.

    with the drag of the blower on the ground an turf tires get your self a set of $40 tire chains for the back tires and you will climb them hills like there is nothing there, i used my 23hp troy built tractor, 2 wheel drive for 7 years commercially snow blowing, i would ware out the tire chains every 2 years but i could push the blower though 4 foot grader banks that froze over night, it didnt even slow down, my troy built blow the snow over 75 feet witch was nice in yards that had no place in the front yard to blow the snow so i would blow it up and over the houses into there back yard, the year we had 7 feet of snow fall in 12 hours it worked like a dream, i really thought we were going to be in a huge problem, but it eat that 7 feet deep snow like it was only 2 feet, that grader banks took a lot more doing, me and my crew worked 24/7 the week for 2 weeks, as we had my own contracts to look after but the phone was ringing steady every day people trapped in there homes, most places you didnt even know there was a house or car there, that was a really finny storm, you see the grader coming down the side streets with there big snow wing out, and small cars were rolling off the grader blade and up and over the snow banks as you couldn't tell there was a car there, there were so many cars up side down in the snow banks all smashed up. we had to snow blow our way down the streets to get to people that were trapped, but me and my guys made so much money on that storm, the guys were doing the walk ways with the troy built walk behinds to get to the doors and hand clean the steps and doors off, i can see why yours will not blow the snow that far, your auger i the front is made very poorly, the bars are all most strait, mine the have a really right side curve to them an my 2nd stage blower wheel spins so fas you cant ever see it is there when its on

    @jimwilloughby Před 5 lety +2

    There's nothing wrong with the blower, to me though, blowing snow in reverse is a pain in the neck, both figuratively and literally. I could be wrong about this, but I think the blowers works better with a full auger because there is less room for air mixed in with the snow, much like when a pump cavitates because air is mixed in with water.

    • @unemployedredneckhillbilly2023
      @unemployedredneckhillbilly2023  Před 5 lety

      Actually it is not bad, I bought a backup camera and don't feel it is needed. That very well could be the answer. I was thinking the denser stream exiting had more mass to deal with the resistance of the air. I am very happy with how it worked. Thanks for watching.

  • @whmitty1
    @whmitty1 Před 4 lety +1

    Just watched and appreciated your entire Ariens saga. You did a good job showing and explaining the issues. You sure have a load of snow to deal with there. I live in central Idaho on a mountain and my 800ft gravel driveway could use one of those WoodMaxx machines but I don't have a tractor to handle that. If you ever think you'd need another walk-behind definitely get one with a hydro-static transmission the next time. You won't regret it. Honda's a good choice if you're not very tall but if your over 6 feet consider the new Husqvarna ST430T which along with hydro-static also allows adjusting the height of the operator's handles (heated) which I needed because of my height. I have one and I go up and down my 800ft driveway on it's tank tread tracks with zero slippage and at a good pace. I wasn't keen on the Ariens "Auto-Turn" because I anticipate having the very problems you did with the SHO 28. I have yet to run the Husqvarna through 18" snow so the jury's out on how well it will work on that but on our first "pre-season" 6" snow it was a snap. Thankfully we don't get those lake fed Northeast snow dumps out here or I'd have to buy a tractor and two WoodMaxx's. One for the front and one for the rear of the tractor!

    • @unemployedredneckhillbilly2023
      @unemployedredneckhillbilly2023  Před 4 lety

      I never expected problems like this with a new ariens. A 800 ft gravel driveway with the autoturn would beat you up really bad. I think most of the problems came from moving the wheels forward this year changing the geometry of everything and shortening the drive system. This has been turned into a machine for a flat blacktop driveway in low snow areas. I thought about the Honda but didn't want to spend almost 4k on a machine. This was in my price range and the company guaranteed me they would be there if there were any problems sealed the deal. Seems to me smaller companies make better products and have better customer support lately. I would never touch another Ariens product after this experience. Thanks for watching.

      +WH Mitty you need to be careful about Husky, tho, their blowers are made by a 3rd party. A buddy of mine learned the hard way and had to sell his Husky after only a couple seasons and buy an Ariens. Now, I have seen detailed reviews of the 2019 tracked model that is claimed to target Honda buyers, and that one is well built. They really put some effort into that unit, but they aren't all like that. Although, a funny thing was one of the first things my buddy did was modify the Ariens chute what an extension because he liked how Husky's extension performed, lol.

    • @whmitty1
      @whmitty1 Před 4 lety

      @@l337pwnage I purchased the new 2019 ST430T tracked model and it seems to handle my ice laden several hundred foot long sloped gravel driveway OK. I think it's massive 373lb weight helped. The Honda-like infinitely adjustable augur height adjustment worked great to avoid throwing gravel. The machine came with a rubber chute extension but because it seemed to shorten the distance the snow is thrown I removed that. It also comes with a metal spring loaded chute guard at the base of the chute. Gimme a blinkin' break! I don't need extra blockage to remind me that my hand shouldn't be inside the impeller housing while it's running! So that's gone too. The few times I used it so far this winter it did the job. One thing I noticed about the chute opening coming from the impeller area was that it looks wider than that of the Honda. I read where Honda has a narrowed opening from just above the impeller area into the chute to help "squirt" the snow farther away. Husqvarna says my machine is good for a modest 40ft and not 50-60ft like the Honda. Nice idea but it could aggravate chute clogging.
      Finally, according to the tag on my ST430T it was assembled in Orangeburg, South Carolina.

    • @l337pwnage
      @l337pwnage Před 4 lety

      @@whmitty1 My friend liked the extension because it helped keep the snow together. He lives in a heavily wooded area and it helped him shoot the snow between the trees. The one he fabricated for the Ariens, tho, was metal and about 30% longer.
      That wouldn't surprise me that Honda would do something like that. In the past they had a collar in the chute to help force the snow together. I know this because I've seen videos of guys torching the collar off, lol.
      ya, track machines can get pretty heavy. Of course, they almost have to be. In larger machines, tracks aren't for more traction, they're actually for flotation, so you don't sink into the ground. In the case of small walk behind machines, you need weight to make up for the loss in ground pressure.

      I never thought about the extra weight of the snow sticking in the blower so it is a wheelie machine for now. Will add weight next time out. This blower works great with no problems. A lot easier then pushing the Ariens up the hill when the drive disc would get wet and slip. Thanks for watching.

    • @Sellarmusic
      @Sellarmusic Před 5 lety +1

      The loader adds enough weight for the blower but you really have to keep an eye on it. Very easy to hit something with the loader when you're looking back at the blower all the time.

    I bet that blower is at least 400 pounds. A Toro 48” 2 stage snowblower attachment for a Groundsmaster 117, 118 or 120 is 275 pounds.
    Why doesn’t one of the tractor companies make a sub compact tractor that is bi-directional? With my back problems and food intolerances I would tire of turning my head for a snowblower attachment really fast.

      It is 529 pounds plus there must be close to 100 pounds of snow in it. I think Ventrac has a 3 point hitch on the front. It doesn't bother me and goes quickly. Thanks for watching.

    Thanks for sharing it really seems to work well and do a good job do you think it will clean as close to the ground as a walk behind unit? I would say your weight on the front needs to be around half to a 3rd of the weight of the snow blower with the turf tires the chains will help. Happy Thanksgiving!!!

    • @unemployedredneckhillbilly2023
      @unemployedredneckhillbilly2023  Před 5 lety

      It will. I lowered the skids to be safe but they don't sink in the gravel like the Ariens so they can be raised back up. That wet snow sticking in the bucket added quite a bit of weight to the blower i didn't figure on. Added another 100 pounds to the bucket and will find out next storm if it is enough. Have a Happy Thanksgiving. Thanks for watching.

      This one looks like it should work good. I was surprised looking back didn't bother me. I got a backup camera to put on if it ever does. This is fun to use. Fighting that Ariens beat my my back up bad and I didn't even break a sweat with this machine. Thanks for watching.

    That would suck having to snowblow in reverse! A front mount would be a much beter setup. But if thats all you have to work with then you gotta make it work. Just doesn't look efficient, just my personal opinion!!!

      @unemployedredneckhillbilly2023  Před 5 lety

      I really wanted another walk behind like I used to use but after that new Ariens that was Junk I decided to try this to be safe and it really does a good job quickly. The BX engine barely knows it is back there working.

  • @davesmith8936
    @davesmith8936 Před 5 lety +1

    What engine RPM are you running? I have found with mowers that full PTO RPM makes a big difference in performance. For almost everything else I find 2,000-2,500 engine RPM (on a BX) provides plenty of hydraulic power for the FEL and/or 3-point hitch.

    • @unemployedredneckhillbilly2023
      @unemployedredneckhillbilly2023  Před 5 lety

      I run it at around 3100 rpm to get the 540 pto rpm required for the blower. It is the same rpm recommend for the mid mount mower. This blower did not bog the motor at all. Thanks for watching.

    Do you end up with a crick in your neck from all the looking backwards? I push snow around sometimes with a TC29 and a back blade and just turning around a bunch to back up to garage doors, cars, etc can wear my neck out.

    Woodmaxx don't blame your other snow thrower for not quite doing what you wanted! You need to size your equipment for your job ! A snow thrower on a trucker is usually bigger than a walk behind! There are some bigger walk behinds snow throwers!

    If you have elevator companies nearby you might give them a call to see if they have old counterweights they'd like to get rid of. You won't find more compact weight than those and most of the time I can get them for free but it's hit or miss if they have any so some patience is required. Also recommend you invest in a set of chains.

    That front end sure is light. Lol. It would be nice if you had a loader on it. That would weight it down a lot. It does work really well. Think you should get some drift cutters also? I've seen your drifts in previous videos and they are really deep.

    • @unemployedredneckhillbilly2023
      @unemployedredneckhillbilly2023  Před 5 lety +1

      It is a very heavy blower and I never thought about the extra weight of the snow that sticks in it. A loader can get in the way in tight areas so I am just going to try some more weight for now. These blowers can be raised 2 feet in the air for drifts so I don't know if drifts cutters are needed. It amazes me how little a load it placed on the engine plus only took a quart of diesel compared to the walk behind that would use over a gallon of gas to do less area. Thanks for watching.
