Russia Releases A New Glide Bomb With Extended Range!

  • The conflict in Ukraine has turned the skies into a fierce battlefield since February 2022. Both sides have deployed a wide range of weapons, constantly adapting and improving their aerial strategies. Recently, what has become a major concern for Ukraine is the emergence of Russian glide bombs.
Reports indicate that the extensive use of glide bombs has significantly aided Russia in gaining territory in Ukraine. These bombs have been instrumental in Russia's recent attack in Kharkiv Oblast, facilitating ground force advances.
The Kyiv Independent report raises concerns about the potential threat posed by glide bombs to Ukraine, highlighting the country’s lack of effective defenses against them. With Russia planning to deploy more glide bombs to support their offensives, Ukraine is increasingly worried about the growing danger these weapons present.
In March 2024, a Ukrainian Telegram channel shared images of a new Russian munition, identified as the UMPB D-30SN, a recent addition to Russia's arsenal of glide bombs. Initially mysterious, this bomb has now been fully revealed after a little over two months, with visuals of the complete weapon and launch videos. It appears that this standoff weapon is becoming more established in Russian service, creating additional challenges for Ukraine. The pressing question now is, how formidable this bomb is?

The base material for the glide bombs comes from hundreds of thousands of Soviet-era unguided bombs, which are then retrofitted with retractable fins and guidance systems to carry 500 to 3,000 kilograms (1,100 to 6,600 pounds) of explosives. The upgrade costs around $20,000 per bomb, according to the Center for European Policy Analysis, and the bombs can be launched up to 65 kilometers (40 miles) from their targets - outside the range of Ukraine’s regular air defense systems.
    Price of ATACMS missiles
For example, in 2020, Lockheed Martin reported working on an order worth $426 million. According to the contract, it was planned to produce 400 missiles. That is one missile cost about $1.065 million.

You're comparing an advanced missile to a modified dumb bomb.
USA and NATO can easily modify their own bombs with the same kit as the Russians do, and it will cost significantly less than 1 million to do it.
What do you think they're doing this whole time? If Ukraine falls, they'll be ready to face a weakened and exhausted Russian army.

I was expecting this. Now It happened. Sending Patriots and various SAMS to Ukraine can't cope forever and is much too expensive, considering their ever decreasing performance. I'm Italian. We lack money for public health system, public scolar system, our wages are low, we pay very high taxes and suffer of high inflation, due to lack of low cost energy supply. In addition, our institutional figures are completely unable to solve any serious problem, not only because of corruption, but even worse, for incompetence. Imagine how the average italian agrees with the useless financial sacrifice to support Ukraine, expecially in terms of weapons and ammunitions. In other european nations the feeling very similiar. We are not agains't Ukraine, nor we are agains't Russia as well. But this is a very useless sacrifice. European leaders represent only themselves and their anglo-american masters. They don't represent the european people when talking about this war. This mess had to be dealt with diplomacy, since 2014, because there was enough room for reasonable adjustement. But the anglo-americans and ukrainian ultra right minorities had other plans...and here's the result

Tragically, Meloni, who was initially thought of as a fairly 'Italy First' politician, has now turned out to be a captured-US asset, war-mongering against Russia, and staunchly taking NATO positions to prolong Ukrainian suffering. Italy has completely become as US_vassal state, like the Germans, Baltics, Romania, the UK, the Nordic countries and the Netherlands. Europe is essentially, a walking corpse now.

Only a minority of targets can be covered by point defense. As for the rest...you're missing a long part of the story before russian bombing started. This story starts at least in 2014. Ok, but gliding bombs can be shot down because that's what SHORAD was designed for.
//With extended range gliding bombs russian aircraft can now drop almost without risk.//
      _
For now sure, but once new Patriot is set up and F-16 are around, you ain't dropping anything, because just F-16 will get to you.
//Shorad are point defense. You can't cover every target with point defense.//
      _
You don't need to. RU drops bombs at specific locations where they are trying to push, or stop UAF, and that's just a few spots, so setting up mobile SHOARD is actually quite easy.
Besides, Ukraine is getting it's own AWACS, so they will be able to detect bombers long before they will reach the drop point, and set e.g. F-16 to intercept them.
//As for the rest...you're missing a long part of the story before russian bombing started. This story starts at least in 2014. You seem to be confused.
RU has resource only for 2 more years.
After that, they won't be able to support the entire front line and it will collapse.
RU is already pulling older and older armor from storage, and Ukraine is getting newer and better equipment.
It may look like atm RU is doing kinda ok, but the numbers show that they are burning their resources like crazy to just take a few km of land, and at this rate they will burn themselves to the ground.
RU is not winning this war.
//European countries are falling in deep economic crisis, not Russia. That's the harsh reality, weather you or I can like it or not.//
      _
Again, you seem to be confused.
Russia won't stop at Ukraine, because Putin want to take back the lands they were occupying back during Cold War.
Poland, Germany, etc. they want it back.
The money we spend now to help Ukraine defeat RU is nothing compared to what we will spend if RU tries to enter Europe.

Yes, glide bombs (GB)s are very smart, that's why the US and Russia have both been using them for about 60 years.
Modern GBs are devastatingly accurate against stationary targets and with live guidance they are accurate enough to be used against targets that aren't moving too fast, like troop concentrations with or without armor. And you think it's stupid to take a dumb gravity bomb, of which Russia has tens of millions in storage but still functional, and turn them into a fairly smart standoff weapon that keeps their aircraft out of harms way, can be easily manufactured in huge numbers and all at very modest expense. Yes, this is such a stupid(TM) idea that, almost by itself, it is winning the war for Russia.

2:10 UMPB has nothing to do with the FAB-250. The abbreviation UMPB stands for “universal interspecific gliding munition.” Its trick is that it can be dropped from an aircraft like a regular gliding bomb, or can be launched from a 300mm MLRS “Smerch” or its more modern version "Tornado-S". Thus, you can use it in both aviation and infantry artillery forces, which is extremely convenient
