  • 👉 Please Note: This is a young gaited horse, a Missouri Fox Trotter, she is 100% sound. Her resistance to moving forward (which is the fix for rearing) makes her movement look odd and uncomfortable at times.
This is one effective training exercise that will help stop a horse from continuing to rear once he has started this undesirable, often dangerous, and disrespectful habit. Of course, as with any behavioral problems that arise out of the blue, it's best to first rule out pain, but the majority of the time you'll find that pain is not a contributing factor, and that a lack of respect, and at times trust, is at the root.

I am learning so much from your videos. The running narration and idea of the horse being in complete freedom when they find the right spot are awesome.

I really like you and how you train! Your self-confidence comes over even on this iPad and I’m sure the horses feel it too.

The horse is consistently uneven in the right hind !
This method does not stop a horse from rearing under saddle. The reins need to be longer, so the horse can find immediate relief when she tries to stretch into self-carriage and she can then become comfortable with the bit and connection, and learn to stretch over the topline, allowing her to USE her back and CARRY the rider comfortably, the horse will then naturally want to move forward without resistance.

Do I need to have the reins hooked like that when I teach this an also what must I do if when she resists going forward she comes in your space and rears

I believe that the reins in this video will aid you in getting a horse thinking about going forward staying on the ground
To keep one off of you don’t be afraid to stand your ground and to use the whip to convince them to go forward and to stay away from you

    Cause of all resistance.

      Hi Claudine,
This is a gaited horse and is resisting going forward, which is the fix for rearing . When she does step forward she is moving freely with no signs of lameness . If a person is not used to seeing Fox Trotters move they might not see that this horse is resisting going forward which is being expressed in some odd hock movement . But as soon as the resistance leaves the horse is moving fluidly.
Thank you for watching and for your comment.

Gaited horse when they are not trying will take some odd steps giving the allusion of lameness . If you look when she is traveling forward into softness she is moving sound
