  • We want a thinking horse underneath us, not one that is reacting. This horse and his owner had gotten stuck in a battle of wills, and the horse must have won a few times, giving him the idea that he could be in charge. This battle of wills is really quite common.
When you help a horse choose getting soft in their face, they will no longer argue with you about taking over. So we’re working on the attitude of the horse simultaneously as working with their Body Control. Again just like we were doing on the ground, we’re paying attention to the horses attitude at any given moment and when he gives us the right attitude we soften and release so he can have a moment to take note within himself that he found the right answer.

I see that you are firm but gentle and quiet to give him time and space to think. Thank you for sharing. 🙇‍♀️🙏

Just a comment here. I love this video for this reason. You talked the entire process out so I could understand what the horse was doing and what you were doing to correct. There would be no way for me to see that he was pushing against your leg when he was pushing against your leg. Maybe other people can tell what’s happening but I can’t tell just from watching. I have watched this video about 10 times. Here I am watching it again. So really like when you talk it through as it is happening. That’s how I am learning more. Thanks again!

Great vlog. I agree with you 100%. Show them, when they figure it out
back off and reward them. Letting them
think through it is building the foundation.

I notice he often travels short on that left hind.

This horse is sound what you are seeing is him compensating for the resistance that he is feeling as I’m asking him to do things that he hadn’t yet figured out how to position his body to find relief . This is common place when you isolate body parts to accomplish a very specific task . If the horse is on a really loose rein and feels no resistance at all the short steps go away . How ever no change comes In attitude or behavior .
      Thanks you for the question

A penny dropped again for me. Thank you 🙏. The weight of the rider shifting to one side or the other. I have heard about it but ignored it. You explained why and hence it makes sense to me now.

Now for this type of horse would you ever start with just flexing and disengaging the hind end before moving off ?

    • @cappelhorsetrainingandshoeing

You could flex a bit . I feel like the flexing is primarily for taking their power away and softening the face . What I’m working on here is body control up into a soft feel . This is more of an approach from the hind end forward . This tends to elevate the withers and increases the drive from behind making it a more functional fix than just flexing would achieve . Not that there is anything wrong with flexing one
