  • I review, breakdown and explain Bodkin Netflix. I discuss the 2024 show which is focussed around a podcaster named Gilbert as Dove, Emmy and himself look to solve a decades old case in Bodkin, Ireland. I react to the mystery, the suspects such as Seamus, the location of Fiona and what the ending means. I also give my theories and predictions on season 2.

I loved Dubh and her arc. It was the heart of the show, which I felt was perfectly crafted and balanced.

Great review as always! I'm currently on episode three and really enjoying Bodkin. For what it's worth, spoilers don’t bother me at all; they actually enhance the experience for me.

Excuse me for putting in my 2 cents but I agree with you, the spoilers help me focus on the movie or show more when I know what's going to happen.. A small glimpse into the future is what I tell myself..

Re: no one finding the Guarda’s car, that makes a lot of sense to me, as an Irish person. In Ireland people don’t question institutions (Guards, hospitals, schools). They still don’t. Go into a hospital in Ireland for an injury or procedure and ask the nurse/doctor questions. Any questions. You will receive a frosty response. It comes from the church’s demands for unquestioning faith and obedience. There are so many secrets because people don’t go digging. Don’t go looking for trouble. PS not surprised the man resonated the most with you. As you are a man. I saw his role as mostly as a means to connect to the US viewers and as an exposition tool. It was well acted but I’m not sure it was written fairly to the actor.

Well, I'm in just for one episode so maybe my experience is not totally accurate in relation to all I haven't seen yet but so far it is BRILLIANT!
Honestly, I started it without any expectations and was properly rewarded for it, series debut is dark, eerie, hilarious, smart and convincing all at the same time.
Written well, acted great, cast is spot on, I can't say when I was so thrilled to see next episode as I was today. Although it is not strictly comedy or thriller but a masterful mix of both, I guess it checks all meaningful boxes of both genres.
So, people give it a try, it won't disappoint!

Good a review, but I completely disagree on the main characters. For me, Dove was the most compelling character, not least because of her sometimes frustrating abrasiveness. Coming, as it was, from her childhod trauma, it was an understandable self-protecting mechanism that thankfully she was able to break through at the end. Also Emmy was a great character. Her initial naivité and eagerness to please gradually making way to reveal her inner strength & even a ruthless side was very satisfying to see. And her affair with whats-his-name was part of that transformation, so quite relevant to her character. Gilbert was by far my least favourite character, not only of the 3 leads, but pretty much of all the important characters (except Sean). The actor was ok, but I didn't find him as strong as the others, especially Siobhan Cullen & Robyn Cara. Well, I guess that's individual opinons for you... If there is a season 2, I hope ill be centred on Dove, maybe with Emmy being involved as well. But I think Gilbert's part is done.

I enjoyed the series for the performances but the plot had me spinning in circles. I think they casted the Sean character too old for me to believe he was unborn during the date of the disappearances. Gilbert, Dove, and Emmy’s team dynamic was really fun to watch. You can easily see their strengths and weaknesses, and how they built relationships with all the people involved in the mystery. One could see how “journalism” can get messy 😂.

Best not to think too much about the mystery and just enjoy the characters and performances. Dove was insufferable, but I could see the character carry another series.

I really wanted to like this show. It has a lot of the things that I like from a show, but I feel like there's no payoff in the end - after patiently waiting and anticipating whatever small development (which felt very slow at times). Is it a cliffhanger or just incomplete ending idk 🤷‍♀️ but I was left very unsatisfied and almost disappointed

For instance: what happened to seamus and the mcardles and the interpol? I mean they made us follow their story for how many episodes just to leave it hanging?.
What about the wolf? Is it just her hallucination then? I thought it would have a significant meaning or even something mystical.
Gilbert just throws away all that they've worked for and sacrificed a lot for?? Because of what? Self reflection and discovery?
Weird message about truth not as important as story. And you should throw away the truth that you discover by lying/manipulating.

Honestly, you didn't explain much and mostly gave just your personal sentiment about characters and the series. I disagree with you about certain opinions, and think you should try to go deeper when doing such (analysis) videos, maybe even consult with someone else to maybe get a bigger picture, since this seems, to me, very shallow and superficial with just your opinions after just freshly finishing the show.

They managed to create a female character so unwatchable, that when she is getting arrested, the audience is thinking “make her disappear”. Lazy writing and poor character development.

Everyone says "she's supposed to be insufferable, that's the point." If that's the point, then it's a dumb one. She didn't have enough of a real redemption arc for her "change" to be believable. When she puts her head on Gilbert's shoulder at the end of the last episode, it feels INSANELY forced, rushed and out of character. Literally moments before she was saying massively hurtful things to him, and all the sudden she's "fond of him"? And then all that drama with the extradition for her to just have to leave her job? Weak character development imo. Seamus was definitely the star.
