  • Chondromalacia patella usually doesn’t heal on its own without treatment of some sort. This usually entails activity modification and physical therapy. That being said, in my experience most with chondromalacia patella get better without surgery.

    Thanks for the info. I’ve never had a knee injury in either leg but both my knees are very crunchy. I’m only 22 but it’s been happening since I was 16. No pain but the sound makes my stomach turn, can’t stand thinking about my bones grinding.

      Have you seen orthopedic surgeon? I wish the doctor in the video had responded to you. I hate it when the doctor says that crunchy sound is from old age but I had a terrible accident in my late 30s and both my knees were injured but I only have the crunchy sound in my right knee. I’m getting a second opinion since the orthopedic surgeon didn’t even show me the MRI and only said that I needed surgery to correct a torn meniscus; however, it didn’t seem like he knew if the torn meniscus could cause the crunchy sound. According to the doctor in this video, it may be that cartilage issue in the knees causing the crunchy sound. Either way, I think you should see at least two orthopedic surgeons and have them review your MRI to see what is causing that crunchy sound in your knees.
      I am curious to know if both of your knees cause this crunchy sound? I’m also curious to know if you saw an orthopedic surgeon and if they did an MRI to tell you what may be causing the crunchy sound in your knees when you didn’t have an injury or accident like I did.

    Hello Doctor I had a left knee surgery before for my knee cap I honestly don’t remember what is was but I’m getting the medical records of mine from 2007 and 2010. I had 2 screws back in 2007. Back in 2010 my orthopedic doctor took it out. And I was fine. I wasn’t sure if the cracking sound started from working out at the gym. But I have no pain at all. If you could give me some tips that would be really helpful cause I’m still working on my health insurance thank you so much. I hope it’s not too ask to ask.

    Thank you doctor for this video.
    My knee cap is a bit loose and creates instability in the knee as I bend my leg or walk. I could feel the knee cap loosely move every time I bend my leg. X-ray shows that there is no problem with the bone and the cartilage in the knee. However, I am still concerned if the bones in the knee are grinding each other [because of the instability] when I bend the leg and thus create wear and tear. Or worse, the knee cap could be out of place and got damaged from walking. The doctor gave me a knee brace to wear for a few weeks, but it has not been that much help. Please let me know if my concerns are legitimate? Thank you.

    what's the difference between Chondromalacia and Osteoarthritis? specially on knee or specifically patellofemoral joint since both kinda making similar noise which related to articular cartilage

    • @orthopedics

      chondromalacia basically means that the cartilage is bad in one area, arthritis would mean that it is bad in a lot of areas

    For me it doesn't hurt but in the gym, whenever I squat there is this tik-tik sound and my trainer usually says that it is kinda loud and he advised me to take fish oil and calcium supplements at different points in time.

    I had osgood-schlatters when I was a kid and I still can’t kneel on a hard surface because of the lumps in both knees. When I was about 12 I had them and I couldn’t play football/soccer as I was in bad pain with it. Now I hear a crunching noise in both knees when I bend and extend. I always wondered if that sound was anything to do with Osgood-schlatters.

    hello Doctor, does that cracking, grinding annoying sound (no pain) ever goes away ? or do I learn to live with it ?

    • @orthopedics
      @orthopedics  Před 2 lety +7

      If cracking doesn't hurt then I tend to just ignore it. Sometimes strengthening some surrounding muscles will improve the biomechanics and cause the cracking to subside.

      I visited 3. one said i might have athritis and the other two said they cant see anything on my x-ray. also took an mri and i had a bone marrow edema. i fixed it all with stretching. I use the leg extension again without a problem I am careful tho to not overload or swing.

      So, the stretching only helped your Bone Marrow Edema diagnosis that the doctor noticed in the MRI. Glad you didn’t need surgery. Sorry the cracking knee sounds didn’t go away. My knees actually make that cracking sound too and I can feel something moving when I touch my knee once I hear the cracking. I seeking Orthopedic Doctor this week and I’m sure he will order an MRI and X-ray. Good luck to you.
