Knee Cracking and Popping (Knee Crepitus). Should You Be Worried?

  • Today’s video covers knee pain, cracking and popping, which is referred to as knee crepitus and the exercises you would implement to help resolve this issue. Cracking and popping sounds that come from the knee are typically associated with the patellofemoral joint, which is located just behind the kneecap.
    Patellofemoral joint pain syndrome (PFPS) describes a very common condition in which a person experiences pain just behind the kneecap. Pain associated with this condition is usually reproduced with activities that put more stress on the joint, such as running, climbing stairs, squatting or prolonged sitting.
    Successful treatment of this condition revolves around temporary behavior modification, such as reducing running mileage and avoiding periods of prolonged sitting. Incorporating exercises that strengthen the hip (glutes) and knee (quads) muscles is also important.
    It is extremely important that people understand that noises from the knee are usually not associated with pathology and may actually be a sign of a healthy, well-lubricated joint. let’s be careful not to make people feel bad about their knee noise as it can negatively influence how they view their body!
    So, if your knees are noisy and you don’t have pain, don’t worry about them. The noise is most likely due to the movement of fluid behind the kneecap and is not an indicator of a developing joint problem.

I have a hip issue that comes and goes...along with a shoulder issue that's starting to heal. I do have popping in my left knee but it's no pain and I never had knee issues in my life. I chalked it up to being older. I realized I have to stretch and do warmup exercises, before I just went straight into my workout. I skip certain stretches cause it irritated my bicep tendons which caused my shoulder pain. I'm learning...I'm sort of new to the fitness industry.

    My knees grind any time I bend it, I was very active and in multiple sports including distance running and had to stop due to the knee pain, I’ve gone to doctor and physical therapists and they have yet to figure out what’s wrong, physical therapy actually worsened my knees and the popping became louder after. I’m only 18 and have been having knee problems since I was about 10, I never knew that this was an actual thing that other people went through, I’m glad to have stumbled across this video :) hope in my knees have been restored

      I’m glad the video was helpful. Many people, including myself, experience kneecap joint cracking, popping and grinding. However, if you have pain, it is a good idea to find exercises that can help. Usually, hip strengthening exercises (single-leg bridges, fire hydrants, Sidelying abduction) help. I would recommend trying the exercises in my kneecap pain video and my gluteus medius strengthening video.

    Hello again. Thank you for your excellent videos. They are really helpful. Quick question: I have heard it said, in other courses, that a flat back, jack-knife-like, single leg squat is strengthening for the proximal hamstrings rather than the gluts. In these courses they advocate a squat with the neck and back flexed forwards to activate and strengthen the gluts. I'd be very interested to hear what you think about that. THANK YOU Julieann : ))

    My right knee has been popping for the last 5 years since i twisted my knee on a turf ⚽️ field during a game. Since then, my knee constantly pops whenever i do certain exercises such as squats, burpees, or deadlifts. It doesnt pop from the beginning, but after a few reps, it will make that audible noise and get sore. Of course it doesnt hinder anything else. I can still run, walk, jump, and sprint with no problems. I’ve been using a lot of balance/stability workouts to try and strengthen it along with yoga. I’ll gladly add these in.

    My left knee started making a sound when I started dancing again after being sedentary during the quarantine (1.5 years maybe?). My PT said it seemed that my quads became weaker esp. the VMO (dt being sedentary) and then the hard dancing triggered it. I've been strengthening my quads since then and the sound lessened A LOT, it stengthened a whole LOT too coz I couldn't even do single leg (L) wall sits a few months ago, my pelvis would tilt like an idiot 😆 and I would sweat a ton but the cracking is still there when I do deep squats. It's frustrating when I hear the cracking.. I know it depends on each person but how long does it usually take for it to be resolved?
    *And I remember the dance move that triggered it 😆 It was something like a fast lateral twisting of the leg, foot in place. And I swear I felt my kneecap kinda getting "out of the rail" haha I swear I felt it (the right one) move to the side momentarily. I stopped right away coz I got so scared 😆. But the right side didn't start crackig maybe because I'm right-side dominant and my home office is in a corner of the room so I was still working it out when I get up from my chair and was not weakened by the sedentary lifestyle. That's when the sound started (almost imperceptible at first, then became louder after a few months)

    • @RehabScience
      @RehabScience  Před rokem

      I am glad to hear the quad exercises are slowly leading to less cracking in the knee joint. Based on what you described in the beginning, it is possible that the kneecap was pushed toward the lateral side of the joint, which is how people dislocate in more severe cases. It’s hard for me to say how long or if the cracking will fully resolve. It’s important to remember that while cracking might be annoying, research has shown that in the absence of pain or trauma it doesn’t signify pathology.

    My knees have ALWAYS popped. At times it can be embarrassing, especially followed after the usual question from people, “are your knees ok?” I would say I’m active lightly other than doing my daily chores as a mom. But as of the past week, I have been trying to go to the gym more. Now, yesterday I did added a few things like weight to my squats and I don’t know why one knee hurt more than the other to the point I feel I can’t squat.. so I appreciate this video, going to give these exercises a try. Hopefully I get relief

    • @RehabScience
      @RehabScience  Před 10 měsíci

      As you probably learned in the video, noises are very common and typically are not associated with pathology. I have actually had the same popping noises since I was a kid that you experience and people often worried about my knees as well.
      If you recently increased the weight with your squats, you may have irritated the patellofemoral joint a bit. This happens to my left knee quite often if I do more squats or increase the weight. The exercises in this video and a bit of rest from more heavily loaded squats should help clear things up.

    So for me, my knees pop ANY time I stand out of a squat. Like, 3-5 times each extension, and once or twice going into the squat(and I'm Asian, so that is my natural rest position). I used to be a competitive swimmer in high school, and I HATED breaststroke because of this. It's part of the reason I no longer swim, as I was afraid of a more permanent issue. My right knee would always feel tender after popping probably over 40 times a minute. I'm 24 now, and still no pain normally, but it definitely freaks people out when I stand. Does that sound normal? No pain or tenderness standing or squatting, unless I do it a lot consistently.

    • @RehabScience
      @RehabScience  Před rokem +2

      Yes, this still sounds normal and fits with the research on knee crepitus. Some people experience popping during extension rather than flexion. As long as there isn’t pain and you haven’t had a major knee trauma, this is probably just your normal mechanics.

      Yo I get pain now I’m kinda upset because its real. I’ve popped my nees 50+ a day for years played football on 3G turf biked there and back and all on little stretching ie none. But one day they just locked I can run up stairs and stuff but I’m hopping and I was vegan for 5 years now I’m 80% carni try to stay away from oils and grains and shiz but anyway I’m really lost with this one I can’t squat the second I attempt to squat the muscle kinda reaches its lock point and ye I can do one or a few but not good and unbalanced plus it’s not a real squat. Any help would be so much appreciated o haven’t tried ICE properly yet. Any thoughts on that ^ thinking cold baths. I think it may be linked to ankylosis as my back neck fingers ankles all crack something wild to 100s a day :( not painful but I also have no feelings of strength like I’m always kinda off balance or my feet will cramp. Weird first time ever just jotted it all down so excuse the essay but maybe someone else out there who like me who can help. All the best

      To provide good range of motion which is lost due to high tightness of quads by atheletes , the tightness is pulling the knee cap upwards so to lossen the muscle. Will it be effective and if yes than is calf strech gonna provide good results , if would have to choose should it be dynamic or static?

    Can your knees still crack and pop even if you are fit and exercise a lot? Or is it something that happens only after long periods of inactivity (like in my case)? I was quite worried about this, sometimes it feels as though my leg/knee will „break”, but there is no pain, so I am hoping these exercises will help :)

    • @RehabScience
      @RehabScience  Před 2 lety +81

      Yes, many people who exercise regularly (including myself) experience knee cracking and popping. We have to remember that nearly 97% of knee cracking and popping is not associated with pathology.

    Last week when i was playing football i landed on the toes of my left leg, as my it was straight, at the moment it felt bad but i was able to continue playing. Right now it have no pain and i even can run and play with it but i have this popping and crack feeling at the top of my knee when i straighten it too much (it seems that everybody have a little of it at the same area when they straighten theirs leg too much but it's a little more that that). So is it normal and should i just do these exercises?

    These will be helpful for past injuries where there is occasional pain but mostly no pin and a lot of noise? Basically crepitus on a historically injured knee associated only on occasion with pain. I had a couple of ACL tears, 1 reconstructive surgery and a replacement. Lost a lot of mass on the injured leg that has been difficult to build back up and the other leg has been overcompensating, beginning to lead to some hip and ankle issues now I think. Been trying to build the mass back up, but seems to be very prone to overtraining and seem to have an overactive ITB and very lazy VMO. Doing single leg work I usually hit a roadblock where I have to stop for a week or 2 because of an extremely inflamed ITB.

    I had a stress fracture in my left tibia 2021. After it healed I noticed super loud crunchy cracking popping in my right knee. So I thought it is caused by an imbalance walking with crutches. I decided to stretch, roll, doing a ton of mobility and doing single leg workouts. Yeah it got better, but ich still cannot squat ass to grass without a loud crunchy sound. I am really worried. I don't want to fuck up my cartilage and I like sports so much. I did imaging but without a certain result. The kneecap has some little signs of damage, grade I. I don't know if this is a result of my age (26) and doing sports for 10years or a real problem. I went to different doctors. The all say that my knee is too narrow and yeah maybe my cartilage is rubbing. I am going crazy cause no exercise is helping too reduce the tightness in my knee. I wonder why my other leg does not have any of those signs.

    I have had an issue where my right knee will lock up. When it does it is VERY painful, and MUST be unlocked by rotating my lower leg towards my left before I can walk AT ALL This has been occurring for many years, and changes in frequency of occurrence from time to time.. I had an arthroscopy done on that knee years ago and the surgeon said he could not see anything wrong. I started running last fall, and the left knee started doing the same, so I had to quit running. Currently I am weight training. I started to do dead lifts 2 weeks ago, and am getting some increased pain in that knee. The one thing that does make a difference is using a knee brace with a hole for the knee cap--can make a huge difference {during hiking, etc.). So, I will likely start using a brace for each knee or maybe a wrap while doing weights. I am wondering if this sounds familiar to anyone, and if so do you know what this condition might be?

It started in my left knee, then my right, and now it's in my toes. I'm 15 and am relatively fit, I have strong legs but terrible joints. Some days I'm unable to walk, but I haven't been able to run in 2 years. I've tried physical therapy and it didn't help.

    Hi. I had an accident which completely severed my patellar tendon , back in 2014. Although the nerves around the knee have been damaged, I have a full range of motion.My knee has started to grind and clunk over the last two months,while walking up and down stairs.could it be scar tissue rubbing against displaced cartilage and can anything be done to elevate the problem. I have returned to the gym and include leg strengthening exercises, like leg raises, hip inductor and leg press.

    • @RehabScience
      @RehabScience  Před rokem +1

      It is possible that some scar tissue is present and is affecting your kneecap joint mechanics. If the noise isn’t painful, I wouldn’t worry about it too much.

    Start cycling. For the first month or so... My kness killed me after 6 to 12 miles. But after a few months doing between 10-50 miles a week... For some reason my knees wasn't popping or hurting no more; climbing stairs, squats etc wasn't making my knees pop or hurt no more... But as soon as I stopped cycling for 2 months my knees got bad again.
