Correction: Palladium is typically used in car catalytic converters, while platinum is used in diesel vehicle catalytic converters (trucks). This is not set in stone, when palladium was so expensive, there was talk about converting cars over to a platinum catalyst system, but this never saw the light of day, likely due to the drastic fall in palladium prices.
It's a price thing more than anything. Palladium is almost always cheaper.

In 1934 the $1000 note would've purchased you about 29 Oz of 24ct Gold now worth $66,700.
It would've been heaps safer back then heading to the casino than holding that note.
