  • Trey talks about his understanding of the Fears of the Magnus Archives!
This video took a while to get out, between the cold and uploading issues, it is two full days late, sorry about that!
EDIT: Hey, Editor Trey here, Video Trey is SUPER wrong about the Stranger being about dysmorphia, that's the Flesh, and at some point he just mixed those up in his head, sorry for the misinfo, we will try to be better about catching these things in the future!

In terms of when the powers would've came about, mag 200 implies that most powers came about very early in humanity. It's up to interpretation since the statement does keep things somewhat vague but based on that episode:
The Hunt was the first fear shared by animals. Later "intelligent" animals like humans understood The End and The Dark. The Eye, Spiral, Stranger and Lonely come about from survival instincts from early humans. The Desolation's birth coincided with humanity discovering fire. Once humanity had settled and began educating and understanding itself, The Corruption, Buried, Vast, Slaughter and Web came about. Gerry Keay and Robert Smirke say that The Flesh seemed to come about during the industrial revolution.
Great video regardless, always looking forward to these.

The last time I was this early the most threatening thing in the podcast was Jane Prentiss.

This is a great summary of The Powers.
This is a very The Eye request and I know it's the folly of Leitner and Smirke to try to systematise the fears but.. I'd love a follow up discussion/theory video on your thoughts of how they relate to each other.
There are some obvious opposites (the vast and the buried) and overlaps (the stranger and the spiral, as you mentioned) and, as you mentioned, they exist as a spectrum so it's difficult to know where one fear starts and another ends. But I'm convinced there's a logical scheme there somewhere.
Apologies if you've already covered that before.
Look forward to your next recap video when The Magnus Protocol returns.

Protocol has me trying to figure the which fears we've seen so far.

I didn't understand the fears being comforting until you phrased it here. Which is funny, because I always found the Vast to not be scary. In fact, during my first watch of tma, I realized I used the idea of insignificance as a comfort in my journey out of some bad situations and away from needing to be a perfect honors student--so much so that I made an entire fan Entity about it XD I thought I was Web-Spiral, but maybe there's a bit more multiclassing going on...

i LOVE tma for so many reasons but the fear system is so cool! it works so well for pretty much everything irl. jonny sims straight up classified most fears someone could experience pretty accurately!
this may sound silly, but sometimes when i experience anxiety i tell myself which fear is trying to feast on me. nervous for a presentation? can’t let the ceaseless watcher get to me. scared of being in an airplane? haha, nice try simon fairchild. it’s both fun and effective. also i have autism and can sort sort sort all day long it’s my favorite ever

      If it works, it works!
And yes, it's so much fun to sort it all out!

    Great breakdown of everything! 😊
A minor correction: body dysmorphia is always associated with The Flesh, not The Stranger. Think about Jared Hopworth’s gym in MAG 90, or the Bone Garden in MAG 171.
My favorite fear is The Vast, by far. I find a thrilling odd comfort in the infinite, in the feeling of cosmic insignificance, and in feeling incredibly small in the face of inconceivably gargantuan beings.
I’m not crazy about heights, but it’s mainly only when ladders or anything of the like are involved; I’m not good at climbing up and down steep or unsteady things. Once I’m at the top somewhere, I love the view from really high up, though, so it’s usually worth it, even if getting up and back down is nerve wracking. 😅
The Fears that get to me the worst are definitely The Corruption, which hits the hardest, followed closely by The Buried.
I can’t stand bugs or mold or rot, I have trypophobia _for sure,_ and while I’m not quite a full-on germaphobe, I definitely have some germaphobic tendencies. The Corruption statements are usually the hardest to get through for me, for that reason. They just make me shudder and gag. 😖
And with The Buried, I definitely have claustrophobia. Not to an extreme degree, but the thought of being trapped in a small space where I can’t move, especially if I know no one can reach me, to save me? Horrifying. Some of the Buried statements legitimately made me feel short of breath, even though I was just imagining the situation.
Apart from those, The Flesh is a close 3rd for the fear that hits me hardest, mainly the aspect of being eaten, or being seen as just… meat to be processed. It just gets under my skin and fills me with absolute dread.

True, I have a bad habit of applying something to one fear and just running with it, so thanks for the clarification!
